If I'm lucky I'll have about 46k before I have to put her up for 9-10 months. Headed back to Oki at the end of April.

Ski, another engine? You are the only one making me think I should have gotten the extended warranty. I only have 27K since 9/03.

Maybe there should be two mileage classifications:
Ski mileage
All Others.

31 plus thousand miles.
11 thousand miles ago the stator burned up, other than that no probs.
Except tires, they just don't last very long, after March Badness I noticed it's tire time...again.

Ok, Dealership called me last night said it was a dead battery, New one 85 bucks. I say Ok I'm on my way to pick her up. Get there there like, Umm it's not ready yet and the tech wants to talk to you. Turns out its a bad stator and it ruined the battery because it wasn't charging it.

My question is, if the stator caused the battery to die should a replacement battery be covered on an extended warranty?

Can the old battery still be recharged? The tech said no, it's been drained down to far.

There are people on here that have the Global Warranty Manual. Have them check it out and see what it says.

It's only 85 bucks but still.

But more importantly, why does the stator go out? It's your second one, right?

That is a ton of miles! I've only got 2,000 on my XB, but I bought it in late July of last year. I really didn't even start riding the XB till the end of August when I sold my Yamaha. By that time the season was just about over here in Chicago. I'm hoping to put some miles on it this summer though. I don't know how you guys put that kind of miles on a bike. The most I've ever done in a season is 7,000, and I rode almost everyday.

Olin: 1st thing you need to do for some quality ride time is move away from that climate. Someplace where you could ride year round if you wish. Mountains and hills not far away. Those places do exist!

17560 as of lastnight. Sheetrock screw killed another 120+ for today and any miles this weekend it looks like. Should have another 600 plus by the end of next week though.

Bad batteries can over load the stator. Change the battery often. They are cheep. Use battery tenders.

Shouldn't I have some kind of indication though if the battery was going dead. Or are the gel batteries that different from an acid type and don't slowly die out? I ask because, I've never had a problem with the battery, I ride everyday rain or shine when I'm not out of the Country.

Xb9rski,

You won't necessarily have a solid indication of a failing battery, especially on a Buell with no Voltmeter or Ammeter to tell you anything.
For example, if one of your cells was shorted out, you would now have a 10 volt battery instead of 12 volts. But on a warm day, the engine will crank over quite well, and then the charging system takes over to give you about 13.5 volts. The charging system will now be working overtime to bring the battery up to 12 volts, which it can't do, and overheat the stator.

I thought the same thing about the bad battery wearing out the stator until I saw a schematic of the Buell charging system.

It's a full loss system, so the stator will see the same load regardless. The voltage regulator will actually see less heat (heat = wear in electronics) with failing battery (as odd as that sounds).

(just read the above posts)..

A bad voltage regulator could kill a battery though. A bad stator could probably hurt the battery as well, if it is getting a lousy charge for a long period of time.
