2009 cr with recently overhauled charging system. Ran great in a 3k mile trip recently. Back home, first ride since. Ham fisting third gear and hit 6500 rpm and itís like one of the cylinders stops firing or a butterfly slams shut. Tremendous loss of power and wonít really throttle up any farther.

Started paying attention. 1st gear revs to 8k then bogs. 2nd about the same. 3rd is 6500-7k. Pulled the air box and filter down to bare engine. Butterflies are working together (did the devoid thing before the trip but didnít tie the linkages together at that time).

I did run out of fuel twice on the trip but it was fine all the way home. Just filled up with non ethanol as usual and started having issues.

Thoughts?

Oh and I did a tps reset to no avail and no codes are present.

What was your fuel pressure at the time of the fault? Oh, you don't have a fuel pressure gauge. I'll give you one guess what your next step should be.

My 09 CR did the same thing...fuel pump was the offending unit. I tried to rebuild the one in the bike with just a new pump but was unsuccessful so I bought a complete new unit...never looked back all good!

When you denoid you must tie the linkages together or you will get drivability issues because the butterflies will move independent of each other. They are only linked together by spring pressure.

I checked for the throttle linkage issue. They are operating solidily together. I tied them together as recommended, nothing changed.

When it bogs it sounds like someone is putting their hands over the exhaust, like itís getting choked off somehow. The tone changes and sounds muffled. Back off on the RPMs and it goes away. Itís very predictable. The RPMs reached in first and second gear around about 8000 before performance and sound are affected. 3rd gear and up seem to start around 6500-7000 rpms. Iíve run around with the whole air cleaner assembly off for a couple days watching the butterflies to make sure one isn clamping closed. The are operating together flawlessly.

Someone mentioned an intake air leak which will be the next thing to try.

Also I went into diagnostics mode and still see no codes, and the fuel pressure seems to be in spec at idle and at 4000 rpms per the manual.

Emufridchicken when yours had issues did you see error codes? At idle and at 4K rpms my fuel pressure is within spec but no idea what itís doing when the bike is in gear.

Bodark71....no error codes when mine bogged down....it would idle ok but would bog down in each gear but sequentially at lower RPM's as I got into the higher gears as the load on the engine increased.

Had a kind of similar problem on my V-Rod. It resolved to be a leaky fuel hose in the fuel tank. I missed it first time looking at hoses. It was just a small leak, but it was the problem. These things are difficult. Just keep plugging away till it's cured.

Bodark71....my pump pressures on the bike stand were all ok at idle and at 4k..something I didnt try was pressures under load.

Latest update-disco deed one of the intake. Albee on the rear cylinder is stuck closed. Pulled the spark plug and it looked dark and wet. Going to pull the valve cover off this weekend and see whatís up.

After discovering one of the rear intake valves not moving I finally got up the will power to rotate the engine down and pull off the rear valve cover. referencing a previous post as basically the same thing happened. Cam follower on the left side broke. The shim and pieces all seem to be sitting right below for the most part. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/713190.html?1376018044

As I was rotating the engine slowly to inspect things the other one broke loose as well.

If you experience power lost at 6000 rpm and up, and the tone of the exhaust changes, check your cam followers!

I bet you think that fault just happened all by itself.......It didn't. If you over rev this motor and the valves float, the valve shim will dislodge and jam up the works. Not only will your followers be damaged, but the valves will argue with the piston on who should be where. The net result is a severely damaged engine.
