Finally went to register my new to me '08R today. The NC DMV computer did not "recognize" my VIN. Fortunately, the pleasant lady there manually entered it and gave me plates.

Checked the bike later, the VIN plate on the bike does match the title, 4MZHL04D983B0xxxx. Have a couple of tubers, have not had VIN number issues with those.

I did. My title was out of state (bought in Michigan, title transferred to Indiana), and the DMV lady said the VIN didn't exist and was dissing the officer for making a typo. I told her that I confirmed the number on the bike matched the title perfectly at the time of sale and that the Indiana officer had done the exact same thing again when I had the out of state title inspected... I told her that it was the DMV that had the typo and she didn't like that very much : )

It went through though, so I assume that she had to manually enter mine too.

My guess is that there's a production number that is a leading digit before the VIN or something like that, that makes all of the right numbers 1 space off. I'm not sure though.

I've had no issues with an 08R and 09CR in New York, also no issues with my 3 XBs and Blast either.

Should have clarified that the title was from NY, registered it today in NC. Doubt that there would have been an issue with a NC title since the MC would have already been in the NC computer.

The DMV screws up all the time. I have been known to play agent lottery -- when I don't get the answer I want, I just come back another time until I get the outcome I seek.

My BMW title came from the manufacture wrong. It said it was an S100RR instead of an S1000RR.

Manufacturer/dealer does not give you a Title, they give you a Certificate of Origin.
That goes to the DMV and you get a Title.

DMV, not BMW screwed up...

Always verify the vin on a title and compare it to the stamping on the vehicle. Some human, somewhere, entered it and it could have a typo If you find a typo, take a photo of the vin plate and print it out. Take it with you when you go to register the vehicle. A single photo will end a world of potential headaches.

It's interesting to me that the officer who I had inspect the out of state title didn't have any trouble looking up the VIN.

Must be like where I work... Multiple redundant lists that don't line up : )

You might be giving them the VIN instead of the engine number.
