Check the history before you buy. Ask if recalls were done, or any repairs were made. Clutch master cylinder, charging system, odd noises. If it's an 08 it's prolly more likely to have some issues. Mine's an 08 and so far nothing has even farted except the clutch master cylinder seal. Fantastic bike! Look at it like a desmo Ducati....maybe needs a little extra TLC but well worth it if you're a passionate rider.

These are fantastic bikes for the money, and the maintenance issues are nothing that any lifelong motorcyclist won't have a problem dealing with.

If you're a squid hunting for your first bike? Maybe not so much.

If you do get one, some of the guys in this forum seem to know everything there is to know, I've never seen anything like it.

The 08's are the most reliable but they didn't make the CR just the 1125R. Phill Petersons in N. Miami have excellent 1125 mechanics and if you live in Dade or Broward they will pick it up for free. I've had 5 08's and never had any issues with any of them. One has 20,000 miles and has never given me anything but good times. If your in this area call me at 954-520-9436 Guy.

Hello Guy- I live in Broward County(Coral Springs) and have a 2009CR. I do most of my own work but may be interested in having the mechanic you recommend at Phil Peterson's in N. Miami rotate my engine for the valve adjustment. Have they ever done that for you? Is there a particular mechanic you recommend? Where do you live in Broward? Maybe we can meet up at Holiday Park some time. Mort

i have an 09 CR i live in Key Largo. I didn't know anyone else lived around here.

Petersons as in Peterson's HD?

Ive had excellent luck with my beast so far. I hope to be able to do all the work necessary on my own.

We should get together and ride sometime.

Is this going to be your first bike?
Nick

Just to clarify, it's the slave cylinder that is the issue, not the master.

looks like you have a XB9. Have you been riding long? I had an XB12Scg for a few months and before that i had a blast for about 1.5-2 years. and before that my experience was on dirt bikes as a kid. the 1125 is an awesome machine. it gets really hot tho, specially if youre going to be in miami traffic.

i was wondering about that. i hadn't heard of any problems with master cylinders. I used the EBR slave to fix mine. it works great.

Yeah, my bad, slave.

I thought the 08's were the screwey ones, as changes had been made in '09 & '10's to make corrections?

I've only had mine for a season.

They changed parts of the slave each year, it got progressively better but all 3 years can leak. The "fix" kit came out while the 2010s were in production, it won't leak again after getting it from Harley or getting the replacement actuator from EBR.

IF you have ANY year 1125, get and install either the H-D part # X2086.1AM, the EBR part is X2086.11AZ or the one in Europe(I forget their name... I'm 58 and expected to forget...) Aha!! Oberon!!!
Once the kit has been installed, no more clutch leaks.

The 08s probably had the least fatal issues but the 10s had the best tech to that date.

I love my 08 and so far she's been easy to keep on the road. 29k miles on the clock.

No matter what year, you want to keep an eye on:

Battery/system voltage. Problems will most likely be a bad stator or VR. Manifested in burnt out bulbs(high side) to System Voltage errors(typically Low Voltage).

Odd noises from the left side ignition cover - likely a loose stator nut -
torque to 215 ft-lb, back off 720 degrees(2 turns) then tight to 295 ft-lb.

Look closely at the cams(exhaust especially) and check for delamination(pitting) when doing the valve clearance tests... 12k and 25k IIRC.

Zack

About the the valve check...rotating the engine. That seems a massive pain in the arse. Wouldn't it be easier to just pull the "frank"? I know neither is really easy, per say, but wouldn't pulling the frank give the same access and make it easier to do the obligatory tank insulating?

Sir- you can pull on Frank all you want, and im sure he wont mind, but id rather just pull the frame and leave Frank and 'little Frank' on his own. Ewwww

Taking the frame off the motor isn't a bad way to do it, and it's my approach. It's a lot easier if you have a motor stand, since the motor's mount points (oil cooler and unused points in the back just behind swing arm pivots) will support the bike.

I also use the opportunity to really go through the bike -- check the swing arm bearings, all fasteners, etc.

@Jdugger-
My thoughts exactly.

@Hybrid-
Idunno, sometimes your frank just needs pulling, and there's no way around it.

I have finally ironed out the bad stuff on my CR, and it is a barrel of fun to ride.

I have the high bars, and I find that it is more comfy to ride than my old v star was...not to mention a whole lot more fun.

You have to be careful of the the build date, and if any upgraded to the charging system has been done. There is a post on here somewhere about the exact build dates, but what happened was the rotor wasn't machined properly causing the crank sensor to get confused and causing a miss. I got that straightened out with and upgraded rotor from ebrraceing.com.

As for the clutch weep, I bought the parts from ebr, and it is a simple 1hr job to do it.

As a whole package I would recommend the bike. Lots of power, lots of fun to ride, and you can generally get them for a reasonable price.

Good luck.

Cheers

Craig
