Well I was coming home at the end of last season and lost a cylinder...was able to limp home and basically parked the bike until I could figure out what happened. long story short life got in the way and I just got around to figuring out what happened. The pics speak for themselves, all I can think of is that when I did the last valve job I shimmed it too tight but my log book shows that I had it well within spec...so I am not sure 100% that it was the cause but its all I can come up with.

So now I need to rebuild the engine but being the gear head that I am I can't leave it stock. So anybody got any suggestions? It's my streetbike so reliability is the priority but I would like to get it up to about 150RWHP if possible.

I reached out to EBR about them rebuilding it in a DSB Package or something but I am not sure if they still build engines for people. If not what are my options for me rebuilding it? I would like to keep it under $2K.

So what do you guys think?

1190 kit, new valves, gaskets, but that will put you over the $2k limit I'd imagine.

I didn't know that there was an 1190 kit, do you have any more info on it? $2k is not a hard limit...just a ballpark number that I would "like" to keep it under.

I don't remember missing any shifts or redlining it before it gave way...though I may have it was 8 months ago and my memory sucks. But when it gave way I was slowing down for my exit on the highway.

I spoke with EBR yesterday about an 1190 Kit.

It is a core system, you need to send your old stuff in, or pay the core charge, and they send you new pistons, gaskets, and barrels. ~1,800 sending your parts in, ~$2,200 paying the core. Prices were estimates he was not 100% sure.

~155whp with the EBR Pipe and base ECM, he noted the gains were not with the overall power but were with the midrange and torque. He said the midrange power was insane with the big bore.

Cant wait!

Wow - surprisingly reasonable for that kit!

wonder what cams or other parts they recommend besides the pistons, gaskets, and barrels?

nothing wrong with my bike now, but going to tuck this info away for a rainy day!

That was not from shimming error. You pulled a valve stem, broke a spring, lose a keeper, broke a retainer, or over revved it.

My money is on the pulled valve stem considering the valve head is wedged sideways in the head. if so it either over stressed, or the stem tried to seize in the guide.

You will need to check that rod for deformity and sizing to be safe with a build, and get the race rod bolts. Does EBR do a rod exchange also?

I think I have a better idea of what happened, if you look closely at the piston you can see where the exhaust valve recess is free of carbon. Well there are also valve shaped dings in the piston.

I had replaced that exhaust cam on my last valve check and I think that I may have mistimed the cam gear slightly and over time it gradually bent the exhaust valves until one eventually broke.

Lesson learned in that I did not have the cam locking tool and got it "as close as I could" without the tool.

I am still waiting to hear back from EBR about what they can provide. Customer Service did respond once but not to my follow up email. I have shot an email to Michael Richter and hopefully he gets back to me tomorrow.

If I don't hear from EBR early this week I will just have to order a new piston(already got a new head) and start on the rebuild.

No mis- timing slightly, if you did mistime it you would have known with bad running or no running. Even one tooth off is a bunch of degrees.
One tooth of on my Busa and it would contact valve and not pull through a complete rotation while I was degreeing cams.

So could I take my engine to a local machinist and have my engine bored out and get the same results?

Yes, if your local machinist has 30 years of experience building race engines, and three seasons of experience building and maintaining engines based on the 1125 at top level AMA racing. Then you might get the same results. ; )

At firemanjim...what I mean by slightly is that the cam chain gear is slotted to allow adjustment. All I can think is since I didn't have the cam locking tool when I tightened it there was some movement. Not really a full tooth just a partially off exhaust cam.

This is the info that I got from Michael.

We have 106mm (1190cc) big bore kit ready for sale.

Pricing is set at $1595.00 plus a $250 core charge for cylinders. The $250 will be refunded once your stock cylinders are received at EBR. The performance increase is quite good, around 8-11HP across all RPM’s with a significant increase in midrange torque. We just ran lowered stock wheel base bike at the drag strip, and it went 9.98, 9.98, 9.94, and 9.97 in back to back runs last Thursday, with trap speeds in the 138-139 range. Had Cory West in the saddle who’s never been down a drag strip until last Thursday. I attached a pic of the bike for reference, along with a pic of the kit.

The kit is complete with everything needed. The only caveat being we have only one ECM calibration available for it at the moment, which is for our full 1125 Exhaust kit. We have plans to complete only two other calibrations for the big bore kit. One for a 49 state non catalyst stock muffler, and another for an HMF slip on muffler kit.
