Hello,
First post on the forum, first a little about me. I've been riding for about a year, started on an SV650 where I contracted sport V twin fever, just upgraded to a 2009 Buell 1125r 3 weeks ago. I'm in love with the bike, it's a monster! She's been good to me so far, but after a spirited ride through the countryside yesterday the check engine light is coming on. Any help you folks can offer is greatly appreciated!

Here are the codes from diag:

U0001 - comm error, not too worried since this is the first time

P0087 - fuel pressure system error
B1005 - low fuel system error (I imagine these 2 are related?)

P0693 - left fan
P0692 - right fan
P0691 - right fan

I've done some research and from what I can tell the first 3 errors don't seem to be a big problem. Couldn't find much on the p0691-3, those concern me. I've not ridden the bike except down the street and that seemed fine. I've not had any problems with the fans coming on before. Anyone know anything about these errors, and how to proceed?

Ps I also posted this on buellxb forum.

Could be your ECM. Mine was replaced because the left fan stopped working.

If it's under warranty, bring it back to the dealer that sold it to you. If you bought it off another Bueller, then find a good Buell shop in your area.

If the fans are not operating, your coolant will be puking out rapidly! Don't ride it. Only start and run until your temp shows 171 degrees F. This is when you fans will power up. You can do this up to this temp to allow for troubleshooting, but then give it a rest until cold to the touch again.

Others will chime in and they may know of a great HD shop in your area. Looks like you are around Dayton.

two_seasons, thank you for your reply. I have not had any coolant issues prior to the check engine light coming on. In fact, they would often continue running after I turned the bike off, I wasn't sure if this was normal. I will take your advise, any recommendation on what I should be looking for to troubleshoot? I understand the fans should kick on at 171F, I'll let it idle until then and report back tomorrow. You are correct I am in the Dayton, Ohio area.

Update: I started the bike and let it idle until coolant temperatures reached 171 F. Temp ended up around 180 after I turned the bike off, fans never came on.

OK, so we know that your ECM isn't turning on the fans when engine reaches programmed temp to do so.

ECM job is to take the pin that controls fans and complete that circuit by grounding that pin. That circuit controls both fans.

Do you have warranty? Do not ride your bike as there will not be enough air flow through the pods to keep the engine within operating temps.

Any other ops within the Dayton, OH area that know of a competent Buell service?

Bike is out of warranty, I purchased it used. I trust the guy I bought it off of, only work he had done was the clutch weep fix under factory warranty, besides that no problems. I've been riding the bike for about a week, and never had any of these issues, the fans came on normally before, but now they appear not to be.

Can ECMs work themselves loose or get disconnected, or is it just shorted out? My last ride was the first time I've ridden the bike in wet conditions, it was only sprinkling however, nothing bad at all. I imagine these are more waterproof than that.

If its the ECM it's not the end of the world, the bike is completely stock, I was planning on doing the exhaust and EBR race ECM.

I'd prefer to diagnose and fix myself, or at least attempt to before resorting to a dealer. Any suggestions on where to start?

Froggy,
At this point I have a few things I want to check this evening, I seem to be centering in on the ECM. Going to check and verify that it hasn't come loose. I will check the fuses as well, and battery terminal connections and ground to make sure they're tight. I'll update you guys this evening, I really appreciate the help!

Update! Good news, too! Checked fuses, 15 amper for the fans was blown. Replaced, no longer getting check engine light and both fans kick on right at 171! Good suggestion Froggy, right on the money!
Diag is still giving all the same errors however. I read they don't drop off for 50 starts, is this correct?
Haven't ridden her yet, I'll report on that tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who contributed!

I'm glad to hear that helped. You may have some kind of short and the fuse may keep blowing, so add a few spare fuses to the under seat tool kit.

There are two types of troublecodes, the current and historic. Current codes are ones that are happening right now, historic ones are no longer current but will stay in your history for 50 starts. The historic codes are just for reference and do not affect the bike. The cluster displays the current codes first, then the historic ones after.

Ok, so replaced the fuse and everything seemed fine, was going to test ride, let the bike idle to warm up. The fans came on at 171 and ran for a while, then shut off. It blew another fuse! It's starting to sound like it is a deeper issue than just a fuse...
I've been trying to find a repair manual to help out this process, no luck so far. Any suggestions how to diagnose the electrics for the fan to track down whatever short I have?

Ice:
Check your ignition switch harness where it goes around the fairing. Zac4mac did a mod on his by taking a bit of the fairing material away to give the harness some "relief". The harnesses in these bikes are super taunt!

Sound like you've got a short in the fan circuit somewhere. You won't blow the fan fuse until you ECM tells the fans to kick on.

I'd look for any pinch points with the harness around the head end of the bike. Take your pod covers off and get yourself a bright flashlight. And, because you noticed this when you rode your 1125 in wet conditions, that suggests you may have a wire(s) that has some insulation missing.

Looking at the repair manual, it recommends a breakout box for any diagnostics... Wondering if its time to take it to a mechanic?

Maybe one or both of the fans are on their way out and need replacing? For some reason, I seem to remember someone blowing fan fuses from bad bearings in the fans causing excessive power draw. I don't remember for sure though.

Break-out boxes are a convenience.

If you need to check a particular wire, find a plug/socket for that line.
Separate the M/F ends and put a single strand (from a sacrificial wire) into the female connector, the metal part.
Plug the male into it and connect volt/ohmmeter to the singe strand to monitor.

The Electrical Diagnostics Manual has detailed wiring diagrams.

From your latest experiences, it does sound like fan-bearings(bushings most likely) are seizing and pulling too much current.
Replace the fuse and disconnect one fan. see if the fuse still blows.
Be prepared to sit and wait for cooldowns, worst case...

Update: got the shrouds off, in checking for obstructions noticed the right fan does not feel like it spins as freely as the left. The left is smooth through the fulls rotation, the right has a spot where it feels pretty tight. Sounding like a bearing or bushing problem.
Going to try and disconnect the right fan and let it run, we'll see how that goes

Maybe someone can clarify, trying to disconnect the right fan to see if that is what is causing the fuse to blow, looking at the factory manual appears to be connector 97. Do you need to remove the radiator and overflow to access this connector? I can't see any other way to get to it

Sounds like you found the culprit, good news is that you can get the fan fairly cheap either on ebay or brand new ($70) at a dealer or American Sport Bike.

I personally have not removed a fan, I do not have any help for you there.

I buttoned her back up and let it idle for about 15 minutes with no issues. Manually rotating the fan, i can hear a squeaking at particular part of the fans rotation. I think it's safe to assume my right fan is going out, unless anyone else has a recommendation. Trying to source one to replace it with.

While I support al and American sportbikes, on a product that isn't a life threating product I probably would go used.

The fan is definitely shot. You can tell the bearings are seizing and it is a closed unit, there is not way to open it without damaging the housing. I plan on ordering a new one, I'm a little leery about a used fan seeing as how this one gave me problems. Fast forward a few days for shipping and hopefully I'm in riding condition again!

So I got the new fan in, got it installed and hooked up. The left fan is coming on just fine, however the right fan only comes on after you hit the kill switch and kill the engine. What gives?! The electrical manual doesn't mention anything like this. Fuses are fine, connection is fine.

I may be wrong, the left fan comes on first , around 170 and then the right, around 185 degrees

Easy enough to test that 170/185 turns on at what temp thing.

Disconnect the left fan and see if the right one comes on at all before it gets up to 200.

The fans are each individually controlled by the ecm. The set temperatures vary depending on battery voltage, key on/off, and even what revision of the ecm programming you have. One can and does turn on without the other, if both appear to be working when the key is I off like you say, it is all good.
