I have a 08 1125R with about 12k miles that has not had any issues until I tried passing some cars on a hot, humid, day and noticed I was not getting the same amount of power. I stopped to eat and when I went to leave, the bike barely started. A few days later, when I tried to start it, it ran real rough, like it was misfiring (putt-putt-putt) and would stall out. Winter came and I didn't have a chance to get back to it until the last couple of weeks.
I've been able to get it started, it runs rough still. When it warms up, it will idle, when I give it gas, it has stalled out on occasion. I have to be careful on the throttle. I ran the diagnostic mode, I have some codes but I couldn't find them in the service manual. Finally, when you turn the key, the fuel pump doesn't "cycle" normally. It has a dull flutter to it. I have also had to turn the key on and off several times to get the fuel lines pressurized to start the thing.

I am going to replace the air filter, battery, plugs, top off the fluids, and check to the best of my ability for possible shorts in the fuel pump wiring and problematic sensors. Personally, I think I am having fuel pressure issues.

Is there anyone with suggestions on what else I should check? How do I know if a sensor is bad? I thought of doing a fuel pressure test but I do not have a tester(which I can buy) but I do not have the experience with this equipment. Is my best option to take it to HD? I'd hate to take it there if I can fix this myself. Changing the fuel pump is beyond my ability. I do not have the equipment to do that. I'm no longer in NorCal so ignore my name. Any advice is appreciated.

This won't cover any pump issues, but have you tried a TPS reset?

Yes, I tried the TPS reset. When I topped off the water more coolant to it, it started ok but still ran a little rough and back fired a little when I revved the throttle. I have heard the sensors can cause problems with the fuel/air mix. After letting it sit a couple of days it had trouble starting again. I'm hoping the battery is weak, even at full charge. It is old and sat in the bike during some cold Ohio winter days before I was able to get it out and on the trickle charger.

Battery issue would be my first guess. Take it out, charge it(not trickle)and have it load tested.

A bad battery can cause all issues stated.

Also some of the 08's had a bad cluster that had a parasitic drain on the battery.

My 08 if I left it sitting for more than a couple of days off a trickle charger was a big paper weight.

I think the battery is part of it. I it died before I started using a trickle charger and as I said it completely died while in the garage when the temp dropped to freezing. Even at full charge it was struggling to start recently and the instrument cluster was dimming in and out.

Your symptoms sound the same as a failing fuel pump. You can monitor the fuel pressure in diagnostic mode. According to the service manual, you should be seeing approx 517 kPa at ignition on, and between 380-415 kPa at idle and 4000RPM.

These bikes are sensitive to low voltage, if your battery is kaput, the fuel pump, injectors, ECM, and everything else will not function right.

I'm definitely going to get a new battery. I know that thing is shot. As I said, I'm going to do some basic (needed) maintenance.

Anyone recommend a battery? Any replacement good? I did a quick Bing search.

What Froggy said.
The 517 kPa # is with key on, kill switch to run, motor not running.
This is usually the first sign of a failing pump, early on it will look fine while idling but won't hold 517 when the motor's off.

Go into Diag mode and check pressure, then start and note the pressure.
