Walk carefully Rat.

"AWD is great in the snow and accelerating out of corners"

It's not good for accelerating out of corners unless it's raining... Even then it's for well after the apex.

And I've bought 1125 rods and pistons from EBR along with ex development motors.I've had a couple of good chats with Michael at ebr and they are definitely stripping 1125 motors, adding a longer rod set,106mm bore pistons-shorter- along with new/rebored? cylinders. But they didn't tell me where their stock of base 1125s came from.
I have been told rotax had to part with all the tooling to get paid off by HD.

"I have been told rotax had to part with all the tooling to get paid off by HD."

If thats true Battyone, I wonder where all the "tooling" went and just exactly who now owns the mfgr. rights (tooling & patents) to those engines. Just could be EBR bought those rights or at least the mfgr. who is now going to produce their "new" engines. Who has the coin to do that? Maybe HERO, with a new engine plant here in the US? WOW!

One day it will all be clear and I feel sure we'll all be very pleased with Eriks decision. He's usually spot on in making good decisions as he has in the past, many times. Speculation continues to abound! Much fun following this thread.

I have no idea how Harley handles it's outsourcing, but;

In my world, as a vendor we typically retain ownership of the tooling, since it's often has proprietary tech

the customer (HD in this case) would pay some of the tooling, we'd pay some. That let's us use the tooling for non competitive projects. If the customer is very possessive, we would typically agree to destroy it when they are done.

@Court- What I meant was that Rotax bought the rights to the 1125 motor back from HD so they can sell them directly to EBR, not that HD designed the engine. I'm trying to find my source for that....it was Hell for Leather or something.....is that not correct? If I read three different Eric Buell interviews I see three different editorial versions of how they source the engines, but I thought that one made sense.
Feel free to correct that, as "the Buell guy" at my main Forum I can't be giving out bad info. I've only been the Buell guy for two months, so I claim no great knowledge....badweb is great, by the way!

Who is Court anyhow? I see you have your own topic phorum, looks like you used to work for Buell...are you associated with EBR now? I don't want to be the "A-Hole" who argues with the real expert. Your basement/garage looks like a museum!

I may be totally off-base here, but I was thinking that HD basically had to relinquish the rights to the engine back to Rotax to settle their contract. When the 1125 was developed, HD had to sign a contract with Rotax agreeing to purchase a certain number of engines in return for Rotax investing in the design and tooling for the engine. When HD closed Buell, HD had to do something to compensate Rotax for their losses and HD did this by relinquishing the production rights for the 1125 engine to Rotax.

Or something to that effect...

You read this on the internet, so take it for what it's worth, unless somebody can corroborate.

Don't invest a lot of time seeking the source.

The information is categorically and patently inaccurate.

Think big.

The goal is not to become the "Buell" that was, under the HD thumb . . . . but rather to become all EBR should and could be.

Pure speculation: EBR (Erik) now owns the rights to the 1125 type engines and has made a deal with HERO to produce them hopefully here somewhere with a new factory, and still have an all American sportbike.............. no SUPERBIKE!
And if they choose to produce them in India it will probably bring the price down. Sad to say though, I'm probably on my last sportbike and its been a great one!

FWIW I noticed that on the BRP website that the 1125 engine is no longer there anymore, the only Rotax engines that remain is the Rotax 122 & Rotax 804.

I'm guessing that somebody somewhere is gearing up to produce this "helicon" platform.
I'm guessing also that Erik probably owns the tooling now and I'm hoping that it will be built here in the USA.

Any speculation on when we might hear anything? A month, end of the year, next year?????

I guess he threw us a bone but that's a damned tiny bone!

The best Uly "leak" I saw was on ADVrider in late 2005 or early 2006. A guy made a long post stating something to the effect of what if an American company came out with an all-new sporty adventure bike, etc., etc. He never mentioned Buell. People went nuts over that thread. When the Uly came out, it was obvious that's what he'd been talking about.

A couple of months later I posted and asked the guy what he'd really known. It turns out he'd been at an off-road event and a clothing supplier had shown up with some of the new Buell-branded riding gear that came out with the Uly. This guy put 2 and 2 together and speculated Buell was coming out with an adventure bike and posted the rumor based on that.

Very nice scoop on his part.
