Can I get some advice on travel arrangements for the AMA/MotoGP races at Laguna Seca 7/27 - 7/29?

My current tickets have me flying into San Jose late Thursday 7/26, driving to Monterey and staying in a hotel down town. Then I catch a plane home at 7:20 pm Sunday night.

Does it look like I have enough time after the last race to catch my plane? I don't know when the last race is over. Any good guesses out there?

If you have any other suggestions I'd like to hear them. Thank you, Doug

Also, if you have any advise on where to sit that would be appreciated too. The last time I went to Laguna was in the 60's. I'm sure it's changed a bit since then.

I've driven cars on that course but I've never had a bike on it. All of the photographers like to hang out at the bottom of 8A to get pictures of the bikes flipping from side to side as they go down the 'screw. Other than that I think the best viewing action is in 2 and 3. 4 is OK, 5 and 6 kinda boring as the bikes do the hill climb. Nothing happens in 7, 8 is great. The high speed descents in 9 and 10 could be really interesting for braking. 11 is the lowest speed turn on the track, technically difficult but not the most exciting.

If I were going, I'd probably try to get into 2, 3 or 4. Chances are it's be really hard to squeeze yourself into the crowd at 8.

HTH.

Thanks. I'm familiar with Steve. I was thinking that I would pester him after I got some other opinions. BTW there is a turn 2 package that looks good.

Red Bull Race Schedule

FYI, Monterey-Salinas Transit has free bus service from Monterey, Seaside & Salinas to/from inside the track for GA ticket holders. This can be really convenient as you don't have to contend with traffic.

Hi Duggram,

I live in the Monterey Area and volunteer at the track.

3 things to consider-

1) MotoGP Traffic
2) Salinas Rodeo Traffic
3) Sunday night traffic

all 3 of these will be happening as people try to escape the peninsula. The freeways will literally be a parking lot.

Id bump your flight time a few hours later.

Crabby, thanks for the advice. I changed my reservations to leave Monday noon. I'm staying at a hotel in Monterey so the Sunday night commute will be easier and a late breakfast Monday on Monterey Bay can't be too bad.

Timebandit, thanks for the advice Seating choices are pretty slim now. I ended up with one of the last two turn 4 flagroom tickets. Seats are in the grandstands with access to the hospitality tent. Not sure how good the big screen monitors will be in the tent but if I'm having problems staying out in the sun they'll have to work.

4 isn't a bad place to be. There will be good action coming toward you as the cars leave 3.

When I raced formula cars there, there were a lot of guys who would apex too early in 3 and run out of road post-apex. The guys who use too much trailing throttle can easily loop the rear end in 3. Both of these mistakes result in an off-road excursion at the exit of 3. Spectators would have a good view of that from 4 as the cars are coming toward you as they go off of the track.

I'm not sure where on the track the bikes tend to run into problems, but with the cars I think errors are made more often in 3 than 2 because people are always on the brakes going into the hairpin and it's easy to think the worst is over once they come out of the hairpin (2). 3 is a pretty tight turn without any vertical grade, and people use lots of power coming out of 2. Without any grade, the power application turns into speed, which decreases the margin of error that you have for negotiating 3. 4 is the most high speed turn in that part of the track. 5 and 6 are in the hillclimb, so most of your power is used climbing the hill rather than making speed. I really think 2,3,4 are the best places to watch the action, so you should be in good shape. Everyone going past you should be hauling ass between 3 and 5. You should get to see some pretty good action.

Duggram-

No problem! did not want you to miss your flight!

For breakfast- theres a nice little cash only joint headed out of town in Marina.

Tommys

You can get breakfast for $1. No joke.

2 eggs, 2 pieces of toast, and a hashbrown or Fried Rice for $1.

Or the special for $3, which includges 3 pancakes, 2 eggs, Hashbrown/Rice and bacon/sausage or Ham.

Its where the locals eat.

Firstbuell, I'm jealous. The last pro flat track race I went to that wasn't rained out was in '71. Back then it was Corona Raceway and Ascot. Those were the days. Tried to attend Springfield a few years ago and it was rained out. Maybe next year I can hit the Sacramento Mile.

But for now I'm looking forward to Laguna. For sure I would like to meet up with as many Buellers that weekend as possible. Which reminds me I still need to contact Steve.
