So I have just gotten home for summer and am ready to toss some new pads on the XB12Ss (I post here because it has the ZTL2 caliper) for aggressive street and some track duty.

I have used almost every pad available, multiple times, in only 18,000 miles. OEM, Lyndall Gold, EBC HH, Ferodo, and most recently the EBC Extreme Performance. I want to try something new and want a pad that will not fade on the track but will still work well on the street, with a good initial bite. I am also using a GSX-R Radial MC.

The EBR pads are quite expensive and I am guessing are not made to last long as they are for track use, but is there any sense in looking at any of them? The ones that are most interesting me are the Dunlopads I have heard a little bit about but I am a bit worried about where to purchase them or if they will be any good. I have even heard that some places sell them for a decent price but when you get them you only receive enough pads for half the job.

Would love some advice so I can have a summer of safe braking!

I have been using the 2015 pads on my xb12r track bike about a year and a half, and while they are not cheap they will stop the bike with out any fade. These pads need to get hot before they work well so I can't say how good they would be for the street.

look for posts from "Jdugger" he is very knowledgeable about the braking system.

Have you tried "VESRAH" brand pads - very popular among the SVer's out here on the left coast - may be as $$ as the EBRs tho...you can buy them from Sudco ( as well as Nissin parts/pads) but you may need to call them for availability and/or application

VESRAH does not make their HH spec pads for the Buell, I don't think they make anything actually. I am most interested in trying the Dunlopad SDP993 which is made specifically for the Buell but I can't find them online anywhere in the US.

The 2015 are an excellent overall choice, IMHO. Long lasting durability, excellent stopping power especially when new.

They are expensive up-front, but less expensive on a cost-per-lap basis, IME.

The Vesrah XX pads are also available from EBR. They are top performers, but don't last as long as the 2015.

Fade in the ZTL2 system comes from a lot of sources. As a brake system, one definitely has to concern themselves with heat more than say a traditional 2-rotor set-up.

Rotor, rotor hardware, pad selection and fluid all contribute to a brake system that sustains good performance by a good rider in track/race applications. The good news for you is the XB bikes aren't all that fast, so you are dealing with less outright speed to begin with, and you are less likely to have the sustained heat related issues some of us have struggled with.

I am running the 6mm EBR rotor with EBR hardware, and always run good DOT 4 fluid, in most cases a high temp race variation, and change my fluid almost as often as I change my oil.

Most of my riding will be street riding, hence the hesitation with the 2015's as they sound like they are a track purpose pad. I have the EBC Extreme Performance race pads on now and they don't seem to mind being used on the street too much so maybe I'll still be happy with the 2015's, although they are rather pricey.

Doesn't have to do with fade as much but in terms of overall performance I am also thinking about rebuilding my caliper, its gone through a lot of pads and I think it could use a little refreshing. I have never quite had the bite the OEM pads gave me, I used to accidentally snatch the lever too hard and loft the rear wheel, where-as I have to try to purposely do so with any other pad.

I'm a big fan of the Dunlopad pads. I've got a set on my 1125R and on my CBR600F2. They are second only to the Vesrah SRJL-17 pads. The Dunlopads and the SRJLs have great initial bite, even cold, hardly dust, have great stopping power hot, and last forever. The only downside is that they are probably a little harsher on rotors than less abrasive pads.

I went with the 2015 pads, so far, pretty good, much more linear feeling.

Thanks for the link, exactly what I have been looking for. Haven't been able to find them in the US, and glad they are reasonably priced! Got a bit more meat left on my EP EBC's but I will order the SDP's asap so I can toss them on when I get new street rubber or swap out for slicks at the track.

Stock pads were ok but suffer from fade, EBC hh pads were dirty and scored the crap out of one rotor. Almost entirely street use, I might have 400 miles on the 2015's so far and I'm very happy at this point. No idea how long they'll last, but the info I got says they'll be around for a while yet.

I did this at the same time though.

any one with a ztl2 need a plug machined to snugly press into the end of axle after that it just slips on and screws down....

plug used in the 1190 is bigger due to bigger axle

According to brembo they don't make the RC pads for the buell. they have the carbon ceramics which i have my doubts will be all that durable. i'd imagine that they would be easy on the rotor though

to do this right we need a few freshly scrubbed rotors and a good track day...

I could go do a session on each pad type, then do some skid pad tests for ultimate braking force. Basically objective and subjective notes from each pad type.

The Nissin 2015 and Vesrah XX are awfully good pads...

I just put in the Vesrah pads from EBR, I was replacing my 2015 pads.
I think the Vesrah have more bite.

Longetivity is yet to be determined.

Only track riding for my review.
