My speedometer cuts in and out for now reason. I have a 2009 with 1500 miles on the odometer. When I start out it always works then if I cruise for 15 minutes it will go to zero. The cluster is still lit up but, often is will come back on and sometimes not. I don't have anything loose that I can tell. Can anyone advise how to fix this or trouble shoot it as I don't have an ex Buell dealer within 30 miles of my home?

Change the VSS, it's on the clutch side of the engine, above the basket, to the rear a little bit. Has a silver colored shroud around the single wire. Mine has the wire draped over the dipstick in this pic.

Mine has been doing this since I bought it. Could care less, more interested in what the tach says.

Try cleaning the sensor before you replace it.

Mine just started doing this at around 14,500 miles (2009 CR) on and off usually only when in traffic or under 25 for extended periods. I lost about 15 miles on the odometer.

I had the same problem, for me it was the connection. I have removed the speedo and sprayed the connector with WD40. Since the day I no longer have this problem.
