Hey guys... Have a click coming from what seems to be the right fork tube. Had the steering head bearings replaced under warranty, no difference in sound. Makes an annoying click when putting the bike on the side stand, or when the brake is applied, and the fork is compressed (at a stop, engine off, push down on handlebars). I'm guessing the right fork is somehow catching and is not traversing smoothly. Had the front end wander a bit tonight, let my friend ride a bit, and he had the same feeling. We were having a rather spirited riding session, and the sensation made both of us feel uncomfortable. Any thoughts as to what might make a fork catch and click? When the fork is compressed as above, it seems to catch on compression instead of smooth travel. Figure I'm going to have to take the fork off and open it all up, but I'd like to have an idea of what it may be before starting off... Thoughts? | ||

Before you tear it down: could your preload be too much? could your compression valving be too tight? has the bike been down? when a bike goes down there can be some tree twist, the suspension/forks can do the weird things you describe. take the bikes weight off the front end, then release this pressure by loosening fork clamps and letting the trees relax. align, tighten and test. | ||

Bike's never been down in a real crash. Was gently set down onto Pelacrash slider in parking lot at less than walking speed once. Put foot down while straddling the bike - foot slipped on pile of fertilizer pellets. Caught it half way down, but was unable to prevent contact with ground completely. Preload is set to what the manual says for my weight. Problem started near the end of last riding season when I took it in for head bearing check and eventual bearing replacement. Might have to open the fork up and see what the problem is. Wondering if something internal came loose or unthreaded somehow. | ||

the forks are built by Showa - the same people that build Honda's forks...quality is pretty good...the fork has a "cartridge" design - that is if you have a front stand - remove the wheel - with a long allen wrench/socket driver (8mm I think...about 4" long) and a impact wrench you can remove the bottom mounting bolt ( oil will drain out - have catch tray/drain pan ready) and then remove the top "bolt" and the cartridge can be removed - leaving the fork tubes in the triple clamps...you can inspect assy for interference/worn parts/broken pieces.....but you are most likely hearing the spring catch and release against the fork tube...try increasing/decreasing the pre- load and see if the noise disappears...the pre load tube on top of the spring is of a thin wall design - possibly it has "slipped" off the spring - but I doubt it. check front fork ( head stock ) bearings...hold the front brake and rock the bike forward and back - are the triple clamps rocking in relation to the frame?...last but not least is the front brake (as someone as already noted) suggest you look at posts from JDugger as he is very experienced with "noise" from that big hoop we call a brake rotor...good luck | ||

I have the same thing going on. I dropped off the bike at the dealer today ( still have some warranty ). I'll let you know what they say if it get's fixed. | ||

Mine has done it since day one too. Closing in on 10,000 miles. No issues. I have noted in colder weather that I DO NOT hear it. Maybe it's a viscosity issue? | ||

Zecca, it doesn't sound like stearing head bearings, but FYI E0002.1AM (sold as a pair) Mine's done this since i bought it (used with 4000 mi). but it's never caused a problem If i remember right, the bushings tend to wear out rather quickly. If you want to do replace the bushings, you'll need J8127.3AK oil seal (x2) J8128.3AK seal spacer (x2) J8130.3AK Dust Seal (x2) J8140.3AK Guide Bushing (x2) J8104.3AK O-Ring (x2) J8146.3AK Seat, Rubber (x2) also a fork-seal driver B-48867-47MM fork spring compressor HD-45966 a manual would be a good thing and don't fork-get, the fork oil. Genuine HD Type E HD-99884-80 | ||

Hey, thanks for that. I had been wondering what that noise might be, but not quite enough to dig into it.. Since it now seems many bikes clank, I'll leave it be till there's a better reason for surgery. | ||

Mine has always clicked as I put it on the stand. I assume its normal. If I remember correctly it got louder as I lessened the preload to my preferences, which is less than the lightest setting in the book. It handles good so I dont really care. | ||

mine clicked since brand new as well. after about 10,000 miles I replaced springs (lighter), spacers and oil. No obvious areas of damage observed during tear down. oil looked okay, no debris. After installation Initially the click/clunk was gone... so nice to set it on the side stand and have it feel tight and solid! But sadly the sound is back now. Seems like a quirk with this fork, no biggie | ||

Sorry about the delay in getting back to everyone on this... I was away for the past few days. Went through the suspension settings, zeroed them all out and adjusted to recommended settings. Click still there, but the catch seems to have lessened alot (this while bike is stationary, front brake on, push on handlebars to compress forks). Wonder if maybe I should just drain both forks and refill with some good fork oil... bike has about 21000 km on it now (13K miles or so). Last week my Uly's front end started making "loose-spokes" sounds. I have cast OEM wheels... Brake-rotor. Loretta has a very vocal front end. clicks and clacks. I've been inside and found nothing wrong. part of the Symphony of Life. Z | ||

Mine clicks too. Doesn't worry me as it seems to be common with this bike and nobody has reported it causing any problems. | ||

Mine just started clicking too (LOUDly). 11,205 miles. My Uly with almost 60k miles has clicked for most of those miles, but he 1125R just started yesterday after I put the stock tires / wheels back on after the last track day. It didn't do it at the track or ever before. I pulled it into the garage and swapped wheels. Noticed the click as I was compressing the front suspension before final axle torque... It's pretty loud and making me crazy! I wish someone had a definite answer as to what's causing this. Handles fine, but still... My '03 XB9S with 50k on it has no click and never has... |
