So again this spring my battery is dead. Had a battery tender on it all winter (brand new tender). Had this issue last spring thought my tender was shot but bike was under warranty so I handed them the battery and I got a new one. I threw the tender away and bought another one for another 50 bucks. Well clearly it did me no good. My bike has got the cluster replaced to an 09 cluster and a bunch of other crap for battery drain and still this crap. Now they have new service manager at western reserve barley Buell and the new guy isn't helping. And is still holding my battery over night to charge like im lying even though his tech said its a dead cell. And then said even though the battery was new last april/march. If its dead they wont replace it they will only give me 5% off another battery. Oh and really no help on the on going drain issue that was never fixed when the bike was under warranty. Can anyone lend some advise? As for asking for higher up people and being polite yada yada I know. But anything else?

Chris -

HD batteries are warranted for one year. Our size usually last 4-6 years.
1st 6 months is a straight swap for new.
2nd 6 months gets prorated, 11 months gets you something like 5% off new price.

They aren't calling you a liar, but their techs HAVE to see it charge for 24 hours for a warranty case. HD policy.

There is a minimal draw on the battery, even when all is working right - clock/ECM primarily.
A properly working Tender, hooked up properly with a good fuse should cover that drain tho.

How cold does your bike get?
If your garage is unheated, you may want to bring your battery into the house and keep tendered.
If your electrolyte freezes it will break a/several plate/s.

Not much advice for the present, just the future..

Zack

they they only give you %5 off a new battery, just get a new battery from Al at American Sport Bike, they are a lot cheaper than what harley will try to sell you a battery for

I'm in the same boat as u went for my first ride yesturday and the battery was completely shot, and I had a tender on it all winter. I put a charger on it and it wouldn't even take a charge. This is the second battery in two years. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, see what my options are.

I'm tired of people saying that this bike needs to be on a tender all the time.

I park my 1125 out side at school, and I do not even have access to a tender. I have waited a month without starting the bike and it fired up with no issues.

If the bike is in a cold area for a long time, I could see that causing cranking issues.

But you should NOT have to use a tender on your 1125 if it is working properly.

Rockstarblast1,

I noticed in your sig, you have an 08, have you had the IC replaced?
There was an issue with parasitic draw on the 08's.
A new IC will fix that issue, or if you shut the bike off with the kill switch then turn the key off, it will not draw current.

Zac hit the nail on the head about battery procedure at HD these days. One new thing though is that batteries purchased after jan 1 2012 have a one year warranty now for full replacement. No longer pro rated.

One of the issues with short wheelbase vehicles and stiff suspensions is that the batteries tend to have short (pun) lives.

Comparing the battery life of a stiffly sprung short wheelbase vehicle to a long wheelbase softly sprung vehicle is wrong.

I would consider spending a couple more bucks and getting a lithium battery not only do they way a ton less but some offer 3yr warranty and i think they are like 150. Just a thought

Well the battery took a Shit some time between last September to now and in September that is 5 months old.. if its now its 11 months. Either way my bike has had draining issues it was worst before the cluster swap if I didn't ride it for 4 days it would be dead. No matter what this is bull Shit 3 batteries in 3 years. And if they don't get me a battery for under 20 dollars someone is legit going to get a shoe up there ass at this point. My bike has spent months at that damn dealer getting fixed and the old service manager was great even tho the techs there clearly suck ass. If I didn't love this damn bike as much as I do and could get my money back from it I would sell the damn thing and get a 1198... I feel bad mr Buell ever did business with Thoes ass hats at HD. Yes im pretty pissed over 100$ wasted on chargers/tenders. 50 min drive each way to the dealer. And even if I buy another battery I basically have to deal with having to purchase a new battery every year? That's horse Shit, and yes both time the charger and or tender was hooked up correct. The bike clearly has more draw then what a tender can keep up with. My garage isn't heated but it doesn't get to freezing temps as its insulated and attached to the house. This winter hasn't even been that cold. We have had worse fall's. ... if they seriously wont do a damn thing but give me 5% off tho I think I might just buy one if its true that there replaced for a full year for now on. And every winter just let it sit outside for a few weeks to kill it good and then on the 11th month just return it for new. Im not paying to have my bike serviced when it should have been fixed under warranty for free and never was. Or for a new battery every year because someone couldn't do there job correctly in the 2 months my bike was sitting in the shop.

Grew up in Cleveland, worked for Rick Case back in the 60s-70s, dad worked for W&S. the HD dealer I remember was on the west side of town(I used to dirt track Hodakas - the HD dealer was a Hodaka dealer too at that time)...the 1125 takes the same bat a s sportster ( I think) - might try another dealer??
Zac knows the drill on the bats...(take it inside in the winter (dad would let me take the bat and the empty gas tanks from my bikes inside and stored in the basement) would ride from Easter to Halloween)
Tender= CTek - designed by Norwegians/Swedes - winter doesn't get any longer/colder - status lamps and "class" connectors - been using them for years.
use the HD bat - the terminals are designed for the cable ends - no micky mousing the cables to an alternate brand of bat
LiIon - met the owner of Shorai - a California dirt biker as a kid moved to Japan - designed batteries for R/C planes and cars (while in Japan) he knows what we need in motorsports.
Shorai LFX18L1 $190 270CCa
Shorai LFX14L1 $154 210CCa
for $36 more you get 60 more CCa - no brainer
need to use their (Shorai) charger
SHO-BMSO1 = $80
$190 + $80 = $270
(you've already spent that on lead acid bats and trickle chargers...not to take into consideration the lost riding time you have back there with the short season)
I can use the LiIon on my race bike as well so it's a no brainer for me - it might be your best "final" solution.
Note there was another post on the Shorai over in the charging/stator sub forum - (might want PM the OP to see how it's going...) your a good guy ...the weather back there makes you tough - but work smart not hard on this problem.

thanks bud, thanks for shedding some light and the part numbers and infor. that does sound like the best bang for the buck, and a good purchase in the near future. i dont want to buy a good set up for multiple reasons as of right now. clearly there is still an on going issue with my bike that the dealership didnt fix under warranty like should of been. 2 money is a little tight right now. and 3rd its going to be in the high 60s to low 70s for the next few days here i had plans to go riding the new few days. this is messing everything up. and lastly the dealership needs to do the "right" thing and fix this issue for me, not give me a bunch of excuses.

Yepp they wont replace it free.... 10% off like 105 plus tax. But did say when I get the bike there they will check for free why its draining the battery. This is bull Shit.

My battery died after exactly two years of ownership. I'm assuming it may have sat a long time before I bought the bike new. I always use a tender in the winter and my Sportster batteries last for 8-9 years. I figure that I may as well get a lithium since the price is so close to the same as getting an OEM AFM battery. So far, so good it starts right up (only been a couple weeks) and weighs 2lb 5oz for the Shorai 12-cell.

Have them check the ECM calibration. If you are running the stock ECM, it may have outdated programming that had a bug that caused excessive battery drain.

Latest calibrations came out in Nov 2009, a month after they got the boot. The bug was only in the earliest calibrations as far as I know, so you are probably good to go anyway.

Yep you can use ECMread to fetch the data, it will tell you in plain text which one you have. I believe that even the old free ECMspy would let you view that info too.

It also takes the dealer only 2 minutes to plug in and check, and at that point another minute to update if available.

Ohh so nothing short of me needing to buy software and a cable. And nothing short of them taking 3 min and charging me 80$ lol.... I went and bought a battery from a local battery store. 2 year warranty no questions asked, out the door for 86 bucks. Got it on sale plus 10% off.

Rockstarblast1,

Do you have the original Instument Cluster?

The 08's had an issue with parasitic drian with the original IC, this could be your problem.
