So I dropped in the HID low beam light ( love it!) and now I'm having issues with my battery. It's a new battery only three months old and it will only work if I start my bike everyday, if I let it sit for more than a day it doesn't have enough juice to fire it up. I replaced my old battery for the same reason. I'm starting the think that the headlight it takeing to much from the battery, is this posible or did I just get a bum battery. Oh and it was a stock battery that I replaced it with. I know someone is going to mention the stator problem ( which I've had already) but I'm showing that I'm charging at a consistant 14.3. Any idea's? | ||

Cluster drain? Ived had hid's since 09 and haven't had a failed battery | ||

try and get a replacement on the battery...or at least get it checked out ...the HIDS need juice once to fire up but don't drain at that same constant rate...kinda like florescent lights at a shop... I see you have a '09 and the cluster should be a "good" one - I have HIDs on a '08 and don't have problems (in the warm weather..it's on a tender now as it does get cold here at night), the '08s had a Inst Cluster issue ...I have to turn the kill switch "off" in order to stop a parasitic drain from my '08 cluster...you may want to give it a try before you try a new battery...good luck | ||

I've got an HID for both my low beams, and have never had a problem with them draining my battery. I just went for a ride yesterday and today after it has sat for a few months without being on a charger or anything. the first start up was sluggish, but today it fired up with NO problem. I guess you could check your connections to make sure there isnt a loose one or check to make sure there is no bare wire creating a short somewhere | ||

Thanks for the tips, I'll go through the regular battery checks I just wanted to see if this was a regular HID issue but doesn't sound like it. Thanks again! | ||

Paul - what wattage? OEM is 35W, if you went with 55W, you may be draining your reserves. I have 35W 6k HIDs for the last 3 years, still original charging system, including battery. Loretta can sit 2+ weeks without tender and still start fine. Z | ||

It may also be worthwhile checking out the earth connections ... ... it can be a pain if there's rust where the earths mount to the frame, motor, etc as rust is an electrical inhibitor. | ||

If you have the harness upgrade, what is your voltage read out at idle when hot? | ||

I do have the upgrade and yes the charge is still around 14.3 sometimes it sits around 14.1. I'm starting to think it's a bad battery. Does anyone have any suggestions on a battery besides going to HD. My local battery place says he can't get any like that because of the reversed terminals? | ||

Yuasa makes one - YTX14L see here: http://www.yuasabatteries.com/motorcycle.php?actio n=showListing#formanchor NOTE! the HD brand/type battery works very well with the Buell's wiring harness ( hint hint - go to a HD shop and buy the HD brand)...if you can't - the pos (+) terminal on the harness connecting to the battery will come very close to the frame. If you buy the Yuasa (or any other brand with the correct terminal orientation)...you may need some insulating material to make sure the "lug" on the wiring harness doesn't come in contact with the frame (which is grounded)...take some friction tape from a hockey stick eh? |
