I've been riding for a little over 4 years now, and I have gone through numerous bikes throughout this time. Finally I've found my 1125CR and I love it, but the problem is that I've always liked Ducati.

My question for you guys is:

My local Ducati dealer is offering me 6k for trade in on my CR, which leaves 7300 left to finance on a 2010 Ducati Streetfighter with 5k miles, is this a good deal?
How about owner experience from Ducati?
The service interval scares the crap out of me, but the bike looks so awesome.
Just looking for some honest feedback, I know some of you guys owned Ducati before.

Now some things to keep in mind, I love how confortable my CR is (exept for the seat), love the belt drive, and love that is a Vtwin.

The streetfighter is confortable, the bars are a little more "sport bike" than my CR but overall is nice (aftermarket Ducati seat real nice)

The service interval is kind of crazy, check valves every 7500 miles, but they do have some sort of maintenance plan which cost 2300 but would cover 6 scheduled maintance with a loaner bike for 3 years.

So this is my dilemma, stick with "Bertha" or see what Ducati feels like.

Thanks guys for listening.

I'd ask to take it for a test ride, then make my decision.

For me its really had to say. I've had my eye on an 1098 for a while, but can justify spending 3x as much for 20 more hp yet. Ducati is my dream bike and I will have one someday.

If you do get one the hospitality is great if you go to any GP races. Free parking at Ducati Island, food, drinks, special seating, and more. They used to do the same at AMA race but stopped.

Low rpm fueling is worse on the street fighter. Take it for a ride and see.

Next door neighbor owns a 1098. Seldom rides it but that dry clutch sitting out in his driveway sure is annoying, even with my windows closed.

Either bike isn't much good for two-up riding.

Either bike seat isn't that comfortable. Only a Buell seems to be the comfortable bike with the ergo's in the sportbike category.

The only down side of 1125rcr 2009/2010 Buell ownership is the stator. I'm talking major issue.

As far as scheduled maintenance, in the three-year 45,000 miles you will pay $2300 up front. That $2300 can be spent on anything. With the Buell, in 45,000 you are doing 3 valve checks for anywhere from $180-600 a pop in the shop. Almost nothing if you do it yourself. And, if you hook up with a BRAN BadWebber for the maintenance, fun too

I don't think paying in advance for scheduled maintenance is a good idea. I see many guys selling their bikes with the adder of "and I'll even throw in the pre-paid scheduled maintenance"

All in all, it depends where you want to be three years from now. Do you still owe any money on your CR? If you do some two-up riding occasionally, maybe you should consider the M2 Cyclone or an X1 Lightning. Excellent bikes too.

I was thinking about a Duc before the 1125 came out. I ended up owning an 1125 because it cost about 1/4 as much as the Duc.

Weighing in the important factors like ergos, performance, maintenance, cost of service (including buying a bunch of spare stators), I still think the Buell is a better value. Saving 3/4 of the price of the Duc amounts to a huge pile of cash to pay for things like stators and parking passes at races.

A friend of mine has the 1198. He can't ride it for very long because of the ergos. I can ride my 1125 until the tank is dry without getting uncomfortable. He can't do that with the 1198. He ends up lagging behind, not because his bike is slower, but because the ergos suck and he needs to stop for breaks to get off the bike.

Having owned the Buell, I'm glad that I never bought the Duc. Of course, if it's not what you want then it's not what you want.

When I bought my first Buell (06 Ulysses), I bought the service plan. 3 years, unlimited miles, all services, synth oil, detailing, and the part I really loved was free pickup and delivery. I give them a call, they come pick it up, do their thing, drop it off. It was $1800, which was less than the cost of the 1k,5k,10k,15k services combined, and I had put 17k miles on it in the 7 months I had the bike before my insurance company bought it. I came out a little ahead, but would of been well worth it if I put a good 60k miles on it in those 3 years. Doing the services myself at the time wasn't really possible, plus I didn't know as much about the bikes then as I do now. It was worth every penny to me.

Sorry for that thread jack!

I can't comment on the Streetfighter as I haven't ridden one yet, I'll see one at the IMS tomorrow so I'll try and check it out. I've ridden the current Multistrada, I love everything about that bike.

It would be hard for me to say if the Streetfighter is for you, you will have to ride it and see.

If the seat is the only thing wrong with your CR, I would get a better seat and not worry about being an additional 7 or 8 grand in the hole.

It sure is a pretty bike though!

The stator is not the major issue as before with the ebr kit for $900, and the Streetfighter has its issues too. Check out
http://www.ducati.ms/forums/138-streetfighter/
and http://www.sportrider.com/bikes/146_0912_buell_112 5cr_ducati_streetfighter_comparison_test/viewall.h tml

I've be riding over ten times as long as you and over 70 motorcycles, the CR is a pretty tough bike to beat in terms of a sporty street bike. If you want a Ducati, find a nice used 900SS or Monster for under $4000 and have at it. Plenty of fun to be had with those and much less stress then dealing with a new Streetfighter. Keep the Buell too.

I just did a quick search for "Ducati" on the Colorado Springs craigslist and found about 5 or 6 900SS and Monsters for $4000 give or take. Check them out first.

I agree with Duphuckincati. Can't tell you the number of times I wished I still had all of the planes, cars, and bikes I've sold or traded in the last 45 years. Of course if wishes were horses we'd all be riding. The 1125 is a great bike.

6K for a CR trade-in sounds like a really good offer by the dealer. They are routinely selling for around 6K or just under that by private sellers on Cycle Trader. Still, Duphuckincati has the better idea (IMO). Why not get the best of both worlds: keep the CR and pick up a Monster. Even with the $900 stator upgrade and a used Duc, you're probably coming out ahead dollarwise. Would the used Streetfighter be that much better than having both? Good problem to have deciding on the two options, good luck.

The Duc is not worth double the CR. I actually like the CR better. I test rode the Streetfighter and it does have really great power and handling, but the ergos, especially the foot placement felt really strange to me. Never quite felt right on it. Take a test drive, wait a week and take another test drive, and if you still want the Duc then go for it. Don't let the salesmen pressure you.

Men treat their objects like any other relationship. Survey or commitment?
Read the Ducati ads an there are all kinds of changes being made to the bikes. Some changes are farkles, others upgrades.

At 16,000 miles of 1125 Buell ownership the 1125 is the usual 2 issues: 1 stator, 1 clutch slave leak fix.

Just got back in from 15 miles out, raining in the high 30's on the freeway. Traffic was pretty dense but speeds were good. Way too much fun even in the rain. If I had a duc in the rain it would be major guilt, the 1125 not so much.

Why is everyone afraid of maintenance? Newer Ducs are less labor intensive than the older one's.
How many miles do you ride a year? it could take you a year before it is time to adjust the valves, also the chain on the Duc will likely last longer than the belt on the Buell if you maintain it.
If you are mechanically inclined and have or can get descent tools and a service manual, you can perform some of the maintenance items yourself.
For the things you can't do the only hard part about Ducati maintenance is paying for it, if you cannot afford it, move on.
The Ducati is a very nice machine, if this is a deal that works for you, have at it.

Thanks guys for the all your responses. I talked it over with the wife and she said I could buy it if I wanted but my better judgement tells me not too.

What really got me is the awesome trade value they were gonna give me, but if you account the 7k for finance plus full insurance, plus customizing, plus the required maintance, it's just too much.

I test rode the streetfighter and at first it was a little intimating just by sheer knowledge of the bike (specs) but after riding it for a short moment it felt instantly familiar like my CR. I did enjoy the slightly taller gearing and the awesome breaks but some faults I found were, different ergos (sportbikish) and kind of tight in my male jewels if you know what I mean. But overall very similar.

I guess I just love the brand, not necessarily the bike, maybe one day (I did end up buying a Ducati world champion shirt 11' Carlos Checa $40) but some good news, since I just saved my wife over 8k plus I'm gonna treat myself to a new seat from AL, some more crash protection (kind of Peraniod since my last spill) and maybe an EBR ECM.

Thanks for reading and sorry it's kind of long, oh by the way what is BRAN ???? I've heard it before from Zac4Mac

David -
Go to the BadWeB main page listing the different fora.

It's a list Kristi(Ulywife) maintains that has names, phone numbers, hometown and facilities offered to fellow Buell riders in a pinch.

BadWeB's best hidden jewel IMO.

I've an '08 1125 and a new 1198 Duc. They are very different bikes, the Duc has waaay more power and much better front brakes and since I can do my own belts and valve checks, the mythical extra maintainance costs do not exist. The bike is comfortable enough if you you ride it as intended.
The 1125 is much easier to ride, especially on wet or greasy roads and despite the differences on paper, the time used getting from A to B won't be that different.
For me, the Duc is just an excellent motorbike, the Buell is a bike I love
Ride them both, the only person who can decide is you.

You have to ride the Duc, personal I don't like the Duc, riding position feels like you are riding on the handle bars, the seat has no room at all, and the exhaust shield on the right side put my foot in a vary uncomfortable position, love the motor, love the look, but for every day riding I will stick with my Buell.

The belts on our bikes are designed for the life of the bike.

How do you figure a chain will last longer than that?

I run about 10k miles a year. Dropping the bit $$ for a valve adjustment on a Duc would get expensive for me.

How many folks here can do the desmo valves on a duc? I hear it's not for the faint of heart

Do you really want to be changing cam belts every two yeasrs? I built a monoshock bevel drive Ducati in the eighties and it was a great bike but although the recent Ductai's are excellent bikes and have an enviable racing pedigree as a road bike they have a lot to be desired, great to ride bt far to focused

Blake is right. I was going to post similar but had to leave to go to work.

MORE payments and dreading the bills coming due can never offset the pleasure of a few hours of riding.

Kinda like dating a high maintenance person.

Get out of debt on toys! Don't get sucked in - or you'll be one of those Occupy types complaining about being taken advantage of by bankers.

Better to OWN the road, not OCCUPY it!

try pricing out the insurance too....the duc will destroy you on that alone compared to the buell from my experience. the Buell was actually made with insurance companies to make it cheaper to insure, my 1125r is cheaper with full coverage than my buddies gixxer 600 with liability lol.

WHAT?!?!?

I remember shopping for insurance when the 1125 first came out, and it was ridiculously expensive back then -- 7x what I was paying for my high-HP BMW sportbike with larger displacement. A couple of years later the rates are almost the same.

What this tells me is that the insurance industry started off being afraid of the 1125R. They expected new 1125R owners to wrap them up in the first year or two of ownership, and they expected that people wouldn't be likely to wrap them up if the bikes survived one or two seasons of ownership.

Lots of 1125 got wrecked in the first year or two. LOTS.

If you're comparing rates on two bikes, then you need to compare rates for those two bikes for the same person. There's no reason to assume that the actuaries/underwriters will rate you and your buddy as bearing identical insurance risk.
