Just had 3rd stator failure, fortunately dealer had parts in stock. Only down 2 days. Returned bike to OEM (except air filter). I'll ride it this year as stock, then add one component at a time see if that helps narrow down.

One thing to add to the list is how much oil do you add? Some just dump in three quarts, or some like me add and then do a hot check and bring the oil up halfway on the oil site glass. I am wondering if there is a correlation between oil level and stator life.

Kicka666

liter to quart conversion
1 liter = 1.05668821 US quarts

1.05668821 * 3.3 = 3.487 quarts.
you are putting in 3.5 quarts?

is there any evidence of oil around the breather tube?

Danny no oil @ breather tube, I have 5 1125's I service for customers/mates all get the same amount of oil as mine, 2 of those have had stator failures & one dealer blamed the EbR race Ecm ???.

17) Mileage before failure
Mine never failed but i pulled it and had it rewound at 10,000.

This is tough Mine never faild in the first 10,000 but i did have a VR fail 100 miles after the Recall around 3000 miles.

This winter i removed the recall had custom rewind rewind it and put the f00 regulator on it.
I road home from nc to mi yesterday 713 miles and it was hot!!!mid to high 80's 80 % of the ride stopped twice for food 40 minutes each and gas every 160 miles .
Still charging 13.9+

Hey everybody, here is what I think is a similar problem to your 09 1125R stator problem.

Aprilla apparently needed more electrical power out so they stepped up the rotor power; yes rotors are sized in terms of power because there is a maximum output current due to the magnetics saturation levels.

"the new generator assembly (370W vs the old 500W)"

http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p= 2859249&postcount=30

the thermal problems at say 370W were marginal and going to 500W was smoking the stator. Anyway I think this is the same kind of difference between your 08 and 09 setups.

OK, so reading that post from the Aprilia forum link I gather that these Rotax engines have an identical problem. I guess what I am saying is that Rotax is ultimately responsible for an inherent flaw in design and not Buell or HD. Any legal opinions on this?

Mickeyq +1 google merchantability.

Air cooled bikes are not good parade bikes, they overheat. A water cooled bike that melts in parade mode or in traffic is not merchantable.

DB, I just see a pattern for a problem for a similar design from the same manufacturer. I think a sharp legal eagle could piece together a class-action. Off that topic, I was also thinking of casting a "heat-sink" stator cover. I work with computers and CPUs reach exorbitant temps and with a good heat-sink they function efficiently--even when "overclocked". Casting an aluminum cover with finning might help disperse heat...just a crazy idea.

Mickeyq - cool idea, a dual purpose unit that also serves as a crash cover.

I proposed an idea for a heat sink/finned radiator for the stator cover a few months ago. An external add-on form-fitting radiator might work but wouldn't likely be as effective as a redesigned finned stator cover though.

Another question. I have not had to pull my stator cover as of yet but is the rotor on the 1125 a solid unit? If so wouldn't a vented one similar to the ones compufire sells allow better oil pick up and cooling for the stator? Just a thought I had.

Also is the ambient temps that we ride in have any impact on the stator failing? As in hotter climates vs cooler climates?

Taking legal action against a company that ebr is working would just make things more complicated for everyone and ultimately slow things down.

Im curious to see what this spread sheet will look like.
