I recently just installed a CA charcoal canister on my CR and the bike has been great. Aside from sometimes difficult hot starts and the bulkiness of the canister (not like a soda can!), it is wonderful.

I also got around to de-noid the bike and now the response just feels a little better, and it was something I've been wanting to do. I realized its the little things that count and for me the charcoal canister has been a great improvement. So for anyone thinking of getting this done, well do it, I think its worth every penny.

what is the canister supposed to do? how do you install it?

de noid is the throttle solenoid that will close the throttle plates under certain conditions, want to say whacking full throttle in 3rd.

charcoal canister is the evaporative emissions control device spec'd on the cali bikes. it's function is to reduce the gas smell by capturing the evaporated gas instead of venting it to the atmosphere.

having had both done they are little things but they are massive improvements

This is the sort of thing where we could all benefit from a forum with newer software that offers sticky threads and what not.

For any of you that don't know about removal of the Active Intake Solenoid, you should make it your top priority to read about it and get it off your bike. Removal has both performance and safety benefits, and I don't believe we have ever heard a single negative aspect:

Ponti it wasn't the smell of gas that bothered me as my 1125 lives outside. it was the raw fuel that was dripping out of the vent line that nearly caused me to bust my ass that got my attention.

The gas smell didn't bother me too much, it was the dripping that got me concerned. My bike was dripping from the time it warmed up all the way until I come back home, constantly dripping even just for quick stops in a stoplight.

The canister is a little taller than a soda can but much wider than a soda can too. It's worth it because it completely eliminates the drip and the gas smell altogether.

Is it something that sits on the outside of the bike, or is it an internal part that does not affect the appearance of the bike?

charcoal can fits under the seat below the battery.

Only negative I've had with the charcoal canister installed is hard starting when hot.
To help with that I will usually crack the fuel cap when I stop for what I know will only a short bit.(so that the charcoal can doesn't fill up and put to many fumes back into the intake)

The Charcoal can does not eliminate the smell of gas altogether. It does minimize it.

For the hard starting when hot, I've learned how to deal with it this way: When hot and I start cranking the engine, I can tell within a couple of seconds it's going to be hard to start. So I immediately stop cranking and turn off the ignition for a second or two. Then I re-start again. It fires right up after that. Works like a charm.
