You don't need the HD battery. Chances are the batter you get from work is the same as the HD one, just different stickers. there aren't a lot of battery manufacturers.

As for the charging thing, my bike charges between 13-14 almost all the time. The charge goes below 13 when the bike is getting hot.

I've said this a few times here -
I recently left High Country HD/B for a better paying job, but..
I sold a lot of batteries while there and the AVERAGE for our 12 A-Hr batteries was 4-6 years with a tender.
They are actually very good batteries, Made in USA.

Loretta will be 4 years old in November, still on the original battery.

I still recommend them over the "competition".

I bought a 2002 Blast with the original battery, and kept it until 20009 without a tender. The new owner probably is still using it.

I agree - H-D batteries are pretty decent.

Than the 1125 must be hard on batteries, because my 09 is on it's second HD battery and third battery period (although I'm not convinced my last battery needed to be changed.

And my friends HD battery lasted one season as well.

Batteries are luck gambling. Sometimes you get a good one, sometimes you don't.

I worked the Parts counter for 3.5 years and sold quite a few batteries for H-D and Buells.
Out of several hundred batteries I sold, 3 or 4 failed "prematurely".

Several things about our batteries -
We have a 12 A-Hr battery and it is a shallow-cycle battery, ie, it doesn't like large voltage variations(deep-cycling) so keep it near the 12.6V optimum.
NEVER let the battery go down to the point it won't turn the motor over. You lose a year or more of life if you do.
Get a tender and keep it plugged in when not riding.

Take care of it and it should last 4 years +.
It really isn't magic.

What if you park the bike in an uncovered area with no electric plug in site?
Then how do u tender the battery?

You're in SoCal, go to Pep Boys and get a solar charger/tender and use that.
Our batteries are 12 A-Hr, get a panel that will keep that size full.(WAG of 200-400mA @ 12.8VDC)
Lock it down with a cable to the helmet tab under the pillion.

The shallower the voltage range on the battery, the longer the battery will last.

My 09 CR (oct 08 build date) is still on its first battery. Bike has around 10k miles and I live in AZ where batteries are tested!! I never tender mine and I only let it sit long enough to have to charge it twice.
