09 r has been shutting off intermitently. No headlights no start. Have figured out its the ignition switch relay. Now I have discovered that if I turn the key to on, every 3rd try or so- no click in the relay, no lights no power except I.c.
Found that if I turn the key 'back' a touch, the relay clicks and power is on. Would this be the relay going bad, or my ignition switch itself? Do relays 'go bad' or just either work or not work?

If the relay was bad it just wouldn't work. Sounds to me like the switch is the issue.

Yea now I HAVE to turn the key back to get power. I have had a small tire gauge on the keyring. Thinking the weight of it flopping around has messed up the keyswitch. I have removed it and will road test with just the key and nothing else. Looks like a 50/50 chance of it staying alive till I can get a replacement keyswitch, and I have a major race on Saturday....balls : (

Have you torn apart your key ignition to see if a few wires came unsoldered. Your symptoms are very similar to what I had happen when my igntion wire became disconnected!

common problem with the 1125 and XB range, get a new ignition switch (just the part under the barrel) or take it apart and solder it yourself.

There are more threads on this, its worth doing a good search.

Bad fuel pump is not related....

Got my t45 and pulled the switch off. All the wires were good, all the soldered connections were good. I decided to dig in deeper. After blood sweat and tears, I got the white connection disc out. The bottom has grooves and 'buttons' . There was a lot of wear and metallic filings. Cleaned everything. After finally getting the spring loaded copper contactor back in the correct orientation , all is good. I will be shutting down with the kill switch from now on.
