I was broke down at a bike night in Santa Ana, Ca. with the 08. My bike just decided to shut off luckily it was at idle in the parking lot. I thought it could have been a number of things. Regulator, battery, fuel pump. I knew it was not the stator. No engine light and battery light at the same time. That is usually sign of the stator. One of my buddies stayed with me until I got a tow home. AAA membership did not cover the tow. I did not realize you need the recreation package. doh!

Anyhow my buddy let me use his AMA membership and I was really impressed with the service provided. Got home at 1:30am friday. That morning purchased that AMA membership with tow package for future misshaps.

Okay now I get to look at the bike after work on friday. I sit there and thought to myself when the key is on the dash does not light up and the lights are on. I am thinking the cluster is toast. Maybe a fuse. Then for some strange reason I thought it had to do directly with the ignition and sure enough I was playing with the wires that were bundled together going from the ignition to the cluster. As the key was turned on I was wiggling the wires and the cluster started to cycle on and off. Boom I knew that was it. My mechanic Drew helped me get the ignition off and crack it open to find 2 out of the 4 wires were broke off from the base. About 20 min with a sauder gun wah lah! Back on the road at work. I am so glad I thought small and played with some wires to diagnose the problem I know the dealer would have told me I needed a new ignition not to mention charge for the diagnosis.

Now I know for next time. To check it again if it happens again. The wires move a tiny bit when you turned the bars back and forth not much but over time. Those internal connections can break loose.

sorry for the long rant. Have a good week everyone.

Woot!

I am thinking that all of us need to start our own cataloging (save as favorite) as we read these threads, because you never know when it will be our turn with the same issues.

Thanks for sharing.

Hiya

That's a reasonably common problem, the cables are quite stretched under there. Apparently it's the same ignition switch as on some Tiumph's as my buddies Rocket did the same thing about 2 weeks back.

Definately the first place to look if you run into that issue as a few people have already had the same thing happen..

That happened to me twice, both times I was able to get home making right turns only.

Remove some material from the fairing stay or it will happen again.

Good to know! I will check my wiring loom to Ignition cylinder ASAP and loosen things up a bit.

EYE opener for sure. I see where the cables have chafed the finish right off that area on mine. I'll take a look at it closer today...got a long ride coming up in a few hours.

Mine kept cutting out when going round corners at speed. Have done Zac's mod along with re-routing all the other cables/wires outside of the fairings stay, so now it's only the ignition harness going through that space, much better now, I'll take a pic later and post it up.

Looks like you could put a short piece of plastic auto door edge guard over the "lip" of the fairing stay to protect the wires.

The design pulls the internals apart. The dealer will try to sell you a new ignition and all it needs is to be soldered. Just have a solder gun handy. You will need 4 hands though when the ignition is apart and we used a vice to hold the ignition in place. I held the thin wire and a flashlight while my mechanic soldered it back together.

My throttle cables are now tied too. Mine were rubbing the cluster itself and were a solid halfway through the clusters outter casing...
