"Somebody please name a motorcycle that doesn't get hot sitting on sun-baked pavement in the middle of a hot sunny Summer day."
Thats the same principle I use when it comes to wearing a jacket even in the summer - when youre at a light with a motor between your lights, its 85*+ and youre on blacktop - its going to get hot no matter what you wear.

"So hot in fact, I'd rather ride in a car than on the bike during the summer."
I met a new 1125R owner Sunday and said the same thing - that I ride very little in the summer due to heat/sweat. Not just the 1125, but bikes in general though.
Yes, the ride Sunday was a killer if I hit a light (rare), but other than that it was fine.

Welcome to BadWeb, I've been childishly called many names by Blake because I didnt praise Buell high enough. He likes doing that, its silly as hell. Childish.

Avc8130, Anyway to tell if your 09 is running more lean? What are the AFV's? Do you own a infrared temp gun?

I have one like this and it works surprisingly well for such a cheap tool.

http://www.amazon.com/Temperature-Infrared-Thermom eter-Laser-Sight/dp/B002YE3FS4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8& qid=1310493058&sr=8-2

You could read the temp of the headers or frame, engine cylinders, etc. and really know how much hotter the 09 is running.

My 09 is not very hot. It used to give me the hot foot on the right, but it quit. Mine is all stock except for airbox mods and power commander. Someone mentioned the honda 954. It feels way hotter than the buell 1125cr. With the buell you are sitting more above the motor and the Honda you are hugging it with your legs, so it cooks the hell out of them. The coolant temps also rise much faster on the honda when stopped, but the buell has two radiators and 2 fans, while the Honda has only 1 of each so....

Ceramic coat everything the frame, engine, headers, muffler.

I keep the motorcycle riding to a minimum in the heat.

I also added insulation to the frame, on top of the factory insulation.

Bueller,
I do not have any REAL way to tell if my 09 is running lean. AFVs are usually right around 100, certainly not more than +/-5 when I check.

I have a Fluke infrared temp gun. I also have a Fluke meter that would let me run a temp probe.

If I take data, do you have similar data we could compare to on your 09?

Were you able to tell where your heat was coming from? My frame doesn't seem particularly hot. It is moreso the seat and right leg area. I see you added frame insulation, was your frame hot?

Pics of factory frame insulation? I have a small piece on the right inner frame/tank. Thats it cept for a lil' piece I put near the rear pipe.

Just curious...

Thx

Kinder,
I think that is correct. If my memory serves there MAY be a small piece on the left too.

There was a post a while back from "anonymous" that these areas were determined to be most critical. I don't remember if there were any cost/benefits or engineering reasons for limiting to these areas. I will try to search, but no promises.

My frame was hot and the fuel would boil. I added dynamat all around the inside of the frame on both sides. It helped some.

I can measure temps anywhere you want, not sure where the best place would be for a comparison. If I ride to work tomorrow, I'll measure the rear header pipe at idle for starters.

OK, I will take some rear header pipe readings. How about start the bike and check immediately...then check again at end of ride? Area right behind the bolt on heat shield?

Took some "data".

Pre-ride (started bike and let it idle until "Cold" went away):
Ct: 170
Seat: 84
Frame 85
Header: 360
Shield: 320
Fans on
Post ride (got to work and shut the bike off):
Ct: 199
Seat 100
Header 247
Shield 315
Frame 140
Fans on

What did I learn? Not sure. As with most (all) experiments, post-processing the data is the toughest.

The significantly lower header temp POST ride is most likely because I shut the bike off. The header is thin SS and probably loses heat FAST.

The frame gained some serious heat. It should be noted that I have ~140 miles on this tank of fuel, so there is probably only ~1 gallon in the tank.

The seat gained some temp...but it was never uncomfortable.

I did notice some points in the ride where I could feel a "warmth" on my right ankle. I am starting to wonder if the stock heat shield on the rear header is really helpful. It might be blocking air flow along the header and trapping heated air in the area. I might pull it and test.

I am actually a decent test subject. I do the EXACT same ride EVERY day. Any more ideas, I am all ears.

Tony -

Black radiates heat the best. Polished surface ABSORBS least.
I polished the inside of my heatshield and flat-blacked the outside.

When I'm moving, it's cool to the touch but heats up when stopped.

Zack,
I'm digging through the heat transfer book.

"black body" is a perfect emmitter and absorber of radiation.

I am not sure color is the problem I am seeing. I think blocked air flow is more what I am concerned with.

I think I just stumbled on a new theory about WHY the recorded temps might be higher on the shield. I am not 100% versed on how infrared thermometers work, but if they work based on emitted radiant heat, it would stand to reason that a black body might show a higher temp than an unfinished body.

Along the same lines, if the black body emits heat...is that really DESIRED in this application? Wouldn't the heat shield NOT emitting heat be better? The 08 has a shiny heat shield FWIW.

Well dealer called and even though the engine light came on there were no new codes.

Wondering if the light came on because bike reached 110c and the alternating spark bit came on? It didnt hit 121 as it didnt shut down.

So back to square one.. ride it till i burn up or it does lol

"All Stock?"
Yes, 100%.

Antifreeze and water wetter.

Did some thinking about this... Just coming out of winter things have been cooler, so my memory might be remembering a lot of cold riding. We have had a couple heat snaps recently and I was seeing temps in the high 190's nudging the 200's here and there (in town) Once on the hwy/open_roads though definitely back to the 180s 190s. Ambient was about 100 - 110.
Voltages were all over the place. In town I was seeing 12.4 with the occasional 12.2. Out side of town I was seeing 13's with brief moments of 14. Fans must crush the electrical system...

I will try to reproduce your tests tomorrow morning. It was to hot to ride to work today, but I'm off tomorrow and plan to go for an early ride.

The header looses heat very fast when the bike is shut down. You can touch it after a minute or two.

I measured a few things at idle, after a 80 mile ride, with almost zero stopping.

Coolant temp was 190, ambient temp was in the mid 80's here. Coolant temp stayed around 180f the entire ride.

Rear header, just in front of the heat shield was 340f at a hot idle
heat shield was 280f(bigger deference than I expected)
front header was same, measured at the bend 335-340f
frame right side towards the bottom was 130-135f, measured in several spots.
right side foot peg, measured on the top of the rubber (stock) was 130f.

I have gripster pads on mine and they were max 5 degrees cooler than the frame.

At no time did I feel uncomfortable riding and i had on underamour, Dainese knee/shin guards and baggy jeans. 2009 1125cr, by the way.

Bueller,

Looks to me like we got similar results. My shield showed a higher temp than yours though. Were you using an IR sensor?

I think what we got are good "normal" results. I still have the gun with me for a day that seems "strangely hot" to me.

I think your rear header is definitely hotter than mine. I measured after the cold warning stopped and mine was less than 300, while yours was 360 all ready. My frame was also 85f. I measured the left side of the heat shield closes to the frame, but it seemed to be pretty consistent everywhere.

I'll have to measure the rear header again after the cold warning stops. I think it was 260-280.

I have a Cason CA380 IR thermometer. I was holding it level with the header from about 2 feet away.

My bike has a power commander and is dyno tuned, so that probably makes some difference. I know it adds 8% more fuel at idle from looking at the map.

I just went back out and measured the stator cover, 146f and it's been sitting for about 1 hour.

I just thought of something:

I have the Cali Can installed.

Why do I think this is relevant? On my 08, the fuel in the frame gets warm and then boils and vaporizes. This is vented out through the vent tube to atmosphere. With this venting goes HEAT. The 09, runs this through the Cali Can and back INTO the motor through the TB. That HEAT is no longer "lost" to atmosphere, but kept IN the "system".

Not sure how much ENERGY we are talking about here, but it is SOMETHING.

Well im completely baffled.

No current codes only a historical fuel sensor.

However last two rides in traffic the engine light has come on and stayed on for approx 10 mins.

Dealer is baffled.

Engine is not over heating.

Frame is hot.

Bike runs ok but its a little scary having the engine light popping on.
