This is unbelievable. I've had 3 stators replaced, 2 rotors, and a V/R. I kept chalking it up to the stator. The next stator that fried I was going to send it in to Custom rewind. I was convinced (like most of us I'm sure) that the Custom Rewind would be the fix. Now I dont know.

I hope that when send the stator back to them, they can pinpoint the issue, and we can get past this!

Well I spoke with HD Canada and they dont believe that ANYONE has ever had more then 1 stator/vr failure.

Seems to be a whole lot of silence coming from HD USA about this issue is they arnt aware of people having multiple failures.

I dont know what to think at tis point as im still awaiting parts from backorder

Is it possible to collect the vin #s of bikes with failed stators/vr and email HD USA and Canada with the list?

so what's the deal now? Custom rewind stators are burning up too? Is this fact or speculation?

While...ANY stator can cook, the one shown above is not a Custom Rewind.

The cooked epoxy is the factory auburn color stuff turned brown..as the factory stators do.

To comment on the Canada stator thing...just read the Buell websites...a lot of people have had more thAn one "go south"..

While my C.R. stator is still on the shelf, has anyone actually had a C.R. (green coated) stator cook..?

The only way to MAYBE get HD to do anything about the stators is to file a complaint here:
https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/online.cfm

The more complaints, the greater chance of a NHTSA Defect Investigation.

And, yes other manufacturers have issued recalls over poorly designed stators and charging systems.

Things ARE happening in this direction.
There is talk of a modified rotor that will bathe the stator with oil(better cooling).

A guy was dropping off an 09 "R" yesterday, the service writer said the last 2 we did, we put 08 stator/rotor in.
That's still unconfirmed, but believable.

Easy for me to say "Be patient". I have an 08, but try... : )

My 09 original stator hasn't went bad yet.
So,I can't file a complaint yet.

I only have 600 miles on her.I have only seen the battery light once.

Filed 2 complaints, but I don't think it will help, as it's not a safety issue.

Thanks.

Not necessarily on the safety issue. That is open to interpretation by the NHTSA. Loss of power to the turn signals or headlights can be considered safety issues.

Also a total loss of power or a no start condition have also
been listed as issues in other NHTSA findings.

And as I mentioned above, there have been recalls issued for stators from other manufacturers.

Filing a complaint takes 5 minutes and it can't hurt.

My parts on backorder are due 28th june

Forums mean nothing to HD since "people also post About seeing ufo's on forums"

They require vin#s and service records to prove our point

Zac4mac - "There is talk of a modified rotor that will bathe the stator with oil(better cooling)."

I would love to know more about this.
If you guys will notice all of these stators are really cooked @ approximately the same area, could this be due to a lack of cooling by the oil, is it not reaching this area of the stator? Is it due to heat from voltage?

Someone somewhere if it be Rotax, Erik Buell Racing, or HD knows what causes this issue and or how to fix it the right way, and I or probably anyone else would be willing to pay for whatever the cure may be.

The modified rotor sounds like a very good idea.

08 - I believe made in Croatia
09 - I don't think it is marked, so maybe USA?

(the 2008s had a different, lower-output alternator, and don't have any issues). The RS cools the stator with an oil jet, an orifice, if I have it right, that's newly machined into the alternator rotor, an operation that can be done, as I understand it, on old parts. When word or parts get out, I think it will be a popular modification. "

So how about just custom rewinding the stator to a lower output after it dies the first time? More stator output is only a good thing if you need it.

Custom rewind stator, no harness, oem R/R..... little computer fan blowing on the R/R if we hit traffic

Tbowdre - Glad to hear you're up and going.

I'm ready to hook up my newly rewound stator up to my Compufire unit.....man I hope it doesn't end up like yours.

Dannybuell - "The RS cools the stator with an oil jet, an orifice, if I have it right, that's newly machined into the alternator rotor, an operation that can be done, as I understand it, on old parts. When word or parts get out, I think it will be a popular modification. "

I was hoping this would be one of the new offerings from Erik Buell Racing, I don't think they could keep the shelves stocked due to orders coming in so fast!

Finedaddy1 - follow this link 1/2 way down first screen. http://www.compufire.com/harley-main.html

To me Compufire has something new. The 'oil jet' rumor and this design suggests the traditional 'old school' rotor may be a heat trap. The slots in the rotor can breathe rather than be keeping heat in like the typical 'old school'.

IDK what Buell is doing. I asked about the Steve_a comment on their FB fan page Tuesday and no comment today Thursday.
I just posted same on Erik Buell Racing FB page.

Nice to have the answer before you put it back together.

Dannybuell - "Nice to have the answer before you put it back together."

Yes it would!!!

I have studied on the rotor that Compufire offers and started doing a little digging on the net and found a company that did motorcycle flywheel/rotor work and one of the notices on the first page was "NO PERMANENT MAGNET ROTORS".

I can see how this would "trap heat", maybe this is the golden ticket....If I could find someone to balance the rotor I wouldn't mind being a test subject.

OK, I just got off the phone with the guy from Custom Rewinds. He received my Stator and felt like it was one of the early ones he did. He said he had no idea why it failed, but was going to do everything in his bag of tricks to work out the issue. He confirmed that it was wound with thinner wire in an attempt to generate less heat. He confirmed that that it would come covered in the green epoxy of the newer versions. He also confirmed that it would be at no cost! Woohoo!

Htekwo - gary with custom rewind is great. He is definitely standing behind his product and wants to help the 1125 community figure this out.

I wish he had an answer as to why it failed.

Maybe just infant mortality as someone suggested with my bad luck and compufire.
