I currently use Cortech sport bags on my 1125R. I've been kinda wanting to put on some hard saddle bags for the added security they would offer. Not to mention the water protection. Is there any universal kit out there for installing these on sportbikes in general?

Ccryder has done a nice install see here - scroll down:http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/443695.html

from the world of adventure sport touring you could try Twisted Throttle, The Givi V35 cases - but you would have to build the mounts

Cataract2,
Interested in selling you Cortech sport bags? I've been looking for a set.

Thanks,
Jay

I have the V35 bags on my bike. I'm lucky to have a friend who's a fabricator, because making the mounting system was a real challenge. There have been a few threads over the last two years about how people have done it, with varying levels of slickness and sophistication. Angle iron and a mig welder will get the job done in the end, but making something that looks like it belongs is another level of challenge. My setup has six points of attachment, four of them being the former footpeg mounts, and the only non-reversible part is a couple holes in the plastic undertray (its a $27 part and I have a spare.)

Caution- Be prepared to be criticized for 'ruining the looks' of your bike, also for 'trying to be something its not'. I try to take a moment to reflect on how I've ruined my bike each time I load the hard cases and snap them on. Shame on me.

Pattio,
That’s one of the smoothest integrations of hard bags I’ve every seen!!! I like the bag selection as well, really flows with the bike the best it could. Tell you’re buddy to make a jig and start making those for sale, maybe piggy back off of Dean at Keda or Al at American Sportbike, so you don’t have to deal with the business, just make it.

Btw, regarding “ruining the looks” that’s only because we’re in the States, in Europe, they’d be all over that and rightfully so.

Well, as for people and their opinion of the look of the bike. I say, it's my bike and I will do what I damn well please with it.

Anyways, I was wondering if I might be able to get a bracket for another model bike and modify it to fit mine. Otherwise I have no one here that I know (Germany) that can fab, unless someone could help me out. Also thinking of doing the same for my XB9SX.

Also, does anyone else have pics of their setup?

Ryan - what about mounting a locking box to an extra passenger seat pan?
My first attempt(I am going to mount a smaller box next) I mounted a box that is.... huge.
It works and I barely see it in my mirrors, but I caught a LOT of shit for it, both here and at work. : )

Ryan - the guys in the German Charter of my club have some fabricators in the mix - OK so they are in the Army so it'be "functional" rather than "attractive" (for that you'd need someone in the Air Force) LOL

I'm going to see them on Friday I'll have a chat and see if they're up to the challenge.

I bought a "universal" fitting kit for a Wingrack, I'll have a quick look and see if that could be adapted readily..

Let me know Jules. Don't know what bags I might decide to go with, but I'm thinking it's time for some hard saddlebags.

Zac, I like saddlebags for everyday riding. I have the Ventura bags and rack for the trips I take. What you got there, well, that would certainly remove any issues of space needed...

Somewhere on here is my post of how I mounted Honda VFR OEM hardbags to my 1125R. I couldn't find that thread as quickly as I could find this post I put up over at Sport-touring.net.

http://badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290431/556303.html?1271693123

The Givi V35 bags like Patio posted are very similar to the VFR bags (VFR bags are made by Givi). I was able to use my set-up on one 1300 mile trip to the smokies before I totaled the Buell. My system worked well while I had it.

If you already have the Ventura L-Brackets then you're more than half way there.

The universal wingrack kit will clamp straight on to the side rails and there's a bar the connects both sides together under the rear light... The top plat holds it all together..

I think I have everything in the garage here to make that work.. Just can't bring myself to do it to my bike..

I'll try and sort a few out in the next day or two.. In principal it's this:

The Ventura "L-Brackets" mount by attaching to the rear of the pillion footpeg mounts (footpegs are retained) and they then flow to the back of the bike parralel to the undertray before swooping up 90 degrees to form the two tubes that the Ventura "sports rack" slot into.

There is a single bracket that mounts under the undertray linking both sides together.. That alongside the rack makes the whole setup very rigid.

The "universal" mount for a wingrack has clamps on that will clamp around the Ventura L-Brackets.

once on those wingracks have the "Monokey" fitting that allows hard cases to be put on and off just with a simple button press..

The ONLY question I'd have is whether a further bracket would be needed behind the tail light (i.e. to the rear of the taillight) just to stop any chance of the monokey plates from "turning" on their clamps.

I'll try to dig the kit out in the next couple of days and take some pictures and maybe do a trial fitting to see if that helps people picture what I am saying..

Sorry for the cr*p description : )

Description wasn't to bad. I can picture now what you're saying. Hm, will be interested to see if that will work as I have the Ventura for both my XB9SX and 1125R.

Had a quick trial fit of the wingrack just now... Actually looks simple enough to fit and the universal mounting kit comes with loads of bracketry:

I take a pillion frequently so needed to mount the cases retaining rear legroom.

Some of the mounts lined up anyway (winner)

Hmmmmmm can't upload anymore pics as the "upload" feature isn't working for me now : (

This is another angle of it fitted (loosely for now)

And one final one:

TBH I think an hour a side to figure out the best mounts to use and NO bodywok modifications needed.

Topbox fitting is even easier, just bolt a monokey base to the Ventura sports rack and away you go... 15 mins work..

Jules.

Where did you get the "wingrack"

I can see they sell the L brackets and sport rack but i cannot find the wingrack.

That looks like a perfect solution to commuting. Tank bag is a pain when filling up

Pair of Givi 36n cases , L bracket, sportrack and unknown wing rack is all thats needed?

"Wingrack" is a Givi product. Givi is a luggage manufacturer in Italy.

Twisted Throttle (amongst others) sell them:

http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/8 7

I'd recommend the "Universal Bridge" to join both sides of the Wingracks together:

http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/8 80/135/

And quite possibly this kit:

http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/5 627/135/

I managed to find the whole lot on eBay for $80.

I suspect that a pair of Wingracks, the Universal Bidge and some engenuity would probably get the job done.

TBH I'd forgotten I had the Universal Bridge in the kit too, so I am absolutely confident that I can make this work.

Bryan

If you're just looking to replace a tank bag for comuting I'd recomend the Ventura L Brackets, a Sports Rack, a "universal Givi top Plate" and a Givi/Kapa topbox.

Much cheaper than this setup as the universal plate is only ~$60

(http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/4 570/137/)

That way you could add any Monokey topcase to the rack (I have a 52L "Givia Maxia" that has enough space for a week's worth of clothing and gear)

You can even add a rear "High level Brake Light" to it and a Backrest for pillions as well as a ack that attaches to the topbox lid that you can strap a tent to...
: )

That setup is a doddle to do, no engineering skills needed and the topbox/rack can be on and off in 5 mins flat...

Jules,

I am keen on the side cases but shy away from the top box due to injury. (Pelvis was broken in 3 places and dont have the flexibilty to hop on the bike with a top box).

Bit of a circus show to get on it normally.

Very interested in the side case setup you have there.

If you get it all setup could you please post a parts list. Id be all over that kit

I have a question for you guys, I was thinking about putting hard bags on my 1125CR, but before I do that, do you guys know if those Guvi V35 cases can hold a full face helmet?

Or even better, do you guys know of something less expensive i.e. like a pelican case or something of that matter that could possibly work?

Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks.

Yes the v35 can hold 1 full face lid. That's from their site.

If you check out givi's site if the luggage has a pic of a lid on the description page then it holds a lid.

Givi do a range of products, the Monokey is their "top of the market" offering. The "Monolock" is a sklightly cheaper version.

I believe that most of (if not all) the Kappa luggage fits the monolock/monokey base units and Kappa is quite a bit cheaper.

Givi sell "commuter bags" and "laptop bags" that attach to their base units... Similar to the "trolley dolly" bags that you'd use as carry on luggage on a plane. They come up on eBay frequently and I am going to pick one up in the near future as it's handy for work.

Bryan - I'm off to Germany tomorrow for a party, I'll take a look at fitting the kit properly next weekend and take lots of pictures as I go.

I took another look at it last night and I think if I drill a couple of holes in the Wingrack I should be able to make it work and the plus side is that I also think it'll be easy to put on/off as the L-Brackets come off with just 2 bolts per side.

I think that taking off the 4 bolts it should be possible to remove the whole unit in one go... Roughly 30-45 mins to go from "naked" to full dress tourer.

I'll let you know how I get on (first weekend in June)

Jules, so that kit just bolts right up to where the Ventura rack mounts sit? I wonder if that will work with the XB one as well. Will have to take a look when I get home from work tonight. Thanks for the assessment. I like the bags you show as well, nice and big. Can you get a pic of just the mount hardware setup. I see it with the bag, but it looks like only one bolt lines up. How does the rest of the hardware mount up to hold the bag?

Will have to rethink a place for the turn signals it looks like. Minor issue.

Only thing I might be cautious about is weight. I don't know if the rack mounts can handle that weight.
