Could you get a little more detail on the exact wiring for the regulator? What wires go where on the regulator!

Thanks

Matthew

Methyman- The (3) wires coming from the R/R (in picture)will go into #1, #2, or #3 of the connector coming from the stator.

It doesn't matter which lead from the R/R, as long as the're in these (marked) spaces.

The other (2) of the five wires will go to +/- on the harness.

o.k., COUPLE Q'S IF YOU DON'T MIND...
Why did you have to cut the plastic if it was removed? is the new piece bigger? shaped different? cooling?

Also, I know this a stupid question, but, I have sent a couple PM's, and maybe I haven't got a response... but I have searched everywhere on this site to find the location where you retrieve a PM to no avail. Anybody care to enlighten me please? I got a meter from a buddy, gonna test everything this weekend and start taking it apart. Thanks.

Stargazer- The plastic was cut to accept the new R/R it's about an inch thicker, you have to remove the under tray to remove the regulator.

Open up your e-mail, I have replied to everyone that sent me a PM.

Please let me know if you got it.

So did you leave the harness fix installed and just change the regulator and that caused your voltage increase at idle?

Bueller4ever- No, the "harness fix" is now in a box on the shelf.

The R/R increased my voltage everywhere, I was just showing what it was doing at idle, brights on and fans going at this given temp.
While riding my voltage stays around 14.5-14.6.

I was just wondering if the increase at idle was from the R/R change or from removing the harness fix. The only time my volts are low is at idle with a hot engine.

I'll pull my stator connector tomorrow and plug it directly into the R/R, to see if the volts jump. So you think the compufire is going to keep your stator from burning up?

I hope so...

Had the wiring harness upgrade done at 600 mile service.

Stator toast at 9K miles. Hopefully between the compufire and the rewind, it will take care of it.

Thanks for the write up Richard, it was very helpful

9k is pretty decent mileage for a 1125 stator. Hell, that ain't bad for a motorcycle stator in general.

Great write up,thanks for that.

Unfortunately though as you've removed the wiring harness you can't really argure that the VR has increased your voltage everywhere as removing the harness wouldibcrease the voltage in a number of areas too..

But that's a great write-up!

would this work on a 08 ? i know its not really required but the stock regulator gets really really hot, so anything to increase the life of one would be good imo.

Will it work on an '08, yep. I have been reading up on these things for a few months now and I've seen them on Triumphs, to Suzuki GS's.

My voltage never was "as consistent" before the harness upgrade was installed nor was as high when commuting around town.

When it was sitting still in my garage (see pic.) at this temp the R/R was hot, no you couldn't fry an egg on it but the frame around to the opposite side (under the seat) was pretty warm too. Understand there was no air moving around inside my garage, when riding I have stopped and checked this many times and it's warm to the bare hand.

I went with this because it's less stress on the stator as opposed to a shunted type, will it make my stator live longer? I hope, though I have never had any problems w/ my charging system, I do plan to check my stator out anyway, but for now I have some riding to do!

I just installed the FH012AA on mine. While it shows a good improvement over stock. It does drop to 13.0 when fans are running and the engine is at 80C at a standstill. I find that this is because it's getting hot. I might consider getting the Compufier instead and sell my FH012AA. Anyone interested in the FH?

Finedaddy, so what volts does the Compu-fire show when your stuck in stop and go traffic? Does it get fairly warm to the touch standing still? What was the range of volts you saw?

Oh, question for the rest. What volts is everyone else seeing with the sitting with both fans running and high beams on with the FH012AA Regs or stock regs with harness installed and not installed?

Cataract2- I have seen volts (wile riding) as high as 14.8, and as low as 14.2. I have not sat in traffic long enough get it where it did above (see pic.).

If I were you I'd hang on to that FH012AA, I don't recall anyone installing these having any problems.

Again, it's still early.

my stator with cracks every where in the epoxy was still showing only as low as 12.4 volts sitting at a light, high beams on, fsans running normal operating temp

I just tested mine by removing the harness. It was at 12.4 with a coolant temp of 200. I pulled the plug and it was down to 12.1 before I got the VR plug snaked through enough to reach the stator plug. It rose to 13.8 in under 1 minute and coolant temp was holding steady at 204. I let it idle for another minute and it never got over 13.8

So these bikes will idle close to 14 volts with both fans running and a HID low beam installed and the harness actually does something.

I permanently removed the harness fix. My warranty will be up soon anyway and I can't trust the stock stator on any long rides even with the harness fix. When the stator dies, I'll get it rewound by a professional.

Bueller4ever, do you have the FH012AA or stock VR?

It would appear to me that in either case, your bikes will pump out 14.8 volts with or without a different stator minus the harness.

I have the stock VR. I haven't gone for a ride yet, but I'll post my voltage while cruising when I do. I don't ever remember my voltage being that high though, but I've seen 14.4 while cruising even with the harness.

This still may be the best idea, is there a better detailed description for the de-harnessing part - did'nt someone already write that up in detail? hmm - this is well done though.

All you do is unplug the harness and plug the stator plug back into the regulator plug. There's also the noid plug to reconnect and disconnect the noid type plug coming from the ecm. You'll be left with a little grey plug that is not used.
