halo, everyone...

I would like to know if there is anyway to check the IC, weather it's a 09 one or 08.

I keep getting the COMM ERROR code on the screen, even after the harness upgraded,
I had changed a IC about 2 months ago, on my 09 CR.

Any help please?

Does it work at all or do you only get the COMM ERR on the display? If it does work sometimes, and it tells you what gear you are in, then its a 09 cluster. 08's did not have that feature.

Comm error is due to a lack of communication link between the cluster and ECM. This is normally caused by a power loss (weak battery?), and should go away pretty quick unless your battery is dead. If it will not go away, check the connections on the back of the cluster, it is possible there is a loose cable or corroded connector.

normally, I got the message while running, and with "engine check" on.
It doesn't show the gear, everything on the cluster/lcd screen is gone, execpt the "comm error" and the clock.
even the "N" light does not work, could this be a 08 cluster?

and battary seems fine, it was always around 14v, and after 1 month @ the dealer, today it goes around 13, 13.5 even higher.

tomorrow I will check the connectors myself.
I realy hope it is a 08 cluster!!! which is the cause of everything!

I didn't ride for 4 weeks, I miss her!!!

For what its worth, the 08 cluster will work identically to an 09. The programming is slightly different, but they still work the same. The 09 cluster will default to the gear select screen after it warms up, the 08 cluster will stay in whichever mode you have left it (I usually do instant mpg)

The issue you are having is sounding more and more like a loose connection on the cluster, or a break in the wiring somewhere else along the line.

today I took off the windscreen and checked a little, unplug and plug the ic connector, nothing seemed loosen,went for a ride, still comm error, engine stopped itself 2 times at idle.

The engine stalled on its own? Check the connections on the ECM (under left pod). Also check that the battery terminals are secured and there is no movement in the cable. I've seen some bike come with screws that are a hair too long won't allow a tight connection, it would momentarly lose connection while riding.

ty for reply, even after badweb back to normal.

yesterday I also checked the ecm, seemed quite tight.

just rode 25km earlier, ic stayed at comm error all the time on the high way, was normal before entry and came back after went out, when speed lowed down, while the message, engine check on, RPM points zero.all the time.

the engine stopped 3 times, usualy at idle or just about to move, when restart, it did restart but sounded not very well, when this occured, LCD brightness was normal, i mean, not like power issue, at least for me(no electrical/mechanic exp)...

also while the comm error period, the pump (? the sound when turn on/off the key)sounds very very strange, and some other strange sound
besides...

I want to thank you again,
dealer doesnt know what going on, will performe a full check later...

hope it wont let me down later back home, once engine stopped itself on the ring route, it wouldnt restart... quite scared

"comm error" means a break in the signal between the IC and ECM or the sensors.
Either an "open" at the IC, ECM or in the wires.
A "short"to ground would also kill the signal.
A break in power to the IC or ECM will also...

Here's a block diagram from the Electrical Diagnostics Manual

The CAN connector has a terminating resistor and lives next to the ECM under the left pod.
The Data Link connector is the one you connect a Digital Tech or your laptop to.

ty, guys, and even a snapshot!
i just got my bike back from the dealer.

yesterday i got a new code - p0339 crank position sys intermittent. really serious.

finally, a new ecm solved all problems until now.

thx to badweb where i found the revision info of that code, especialy for those CRs and Rs in JAN 2009, also marco, emile and the boss(they took the ecm from his bike which never been ridden lol), dont know if they gonna read this one day..

spring has arrived, what else?
