I was just intrigued about the worlds reserve currency. Is this true? If we loose that status what will happen? I mean everyone had to convert their money just to buy a barrel of oil. Because were the worlds reserve currency and we print money as we need it. Now the dollar isnt worth anything. So why would these other countries especially want to use our money as the worlds standard? Especailly countries that hate us? I think hes right about alot of things. Im not somuch a money person and ill keep my cash in the bank or buy some ebr parts & pop a wheelie till the end. Lol

Those are OUR jobs! Not THEIR jobs! Don't they GET that? That's what being American is all about!

They took 'er jobs!

I'm so upset, I'm going to go out to start my SUV, and let it idle. That'll show them.

Reserve currency status can be blessing or curse. China and other nations hold a lot of dollars. They don't want to lose the value of their reserves anymore than we do. If China stops using dollars, then they'll no longer be able to artificially deflate and peg the value of their currency to ours. The cost in US dollars of Chinese made products will then rise. Jobs will return to America, and China, which is virtually 100% dependent upon exports, will be in deep trouble.

That's one view of the situation.

As America goes, so goes the world.

Some say that "too big to fail" (TBTF) is the economic equivalent to "mutually assured destruction", (MAD) the nuclear deterrent strategy. All our banks and big business are so inextricably intertwined that it is each 1st word nation's best interest to help assure the economic health of the others.

Basically we, as Americans, need to stop assuming everyone sees us as the "Top Dog," and that we still actually deserve the title.

We do not make the best products - some yes, many ... no longer. When was the last time you bought an American TV?

We are no more "free" and are very much more socially backward than most 1st world countries.

Our National hubris needs to stop, or we will find ourselves far lower than we need to be when reality is no longer ignorable.

Bush and Obama both argued that the yuan was artificially low against the dollar.
2 years ago there was some talk about the price of oil being pegged in Euros. Now the Euro economy is so fragile, Ireland, Greece... The yuan is still lower/stronger than it should be. The Chinese have chosen this route to maintain peak production.

The feds recent 'economic easing', the printing more dollars was supposed to stimulate the economy. A secondary effect was of this was inflation, the dollar buying less.

This inflation translates into the dilution of China's dollar reserves. China has clearly taken a big hit. Chinese products are still great values suggesting that they continue to under value their yuan. Americans could be experiencing higher inflation than we now have, thanks China.

This inflation has in turn hurt the motorcycle industry, specifically those manufacturing sport bikes.

"It just doesn't make economic sense", Terik Duell, founder of the Duell line of sport bikes told BWB. "I would love to go on with this brand. But, the Chinese. A few years ago it was easy -- you just tell people that if it costs less, it must not be as good. Then the internet came along; this is just bad for business."

Dr Don Haul, self proclaimed Republican with Libertarian beliefs wasn't available for interview, but his followers were able to splice together a YouTube video on the subject. The hybrid video, which has the song "Sandstorm" by Darude in it, repeats the following: The gold standard. We need the gold standard. I'll audit the Fed. The gold standard. We need the gold standard. I'll audit the Fed.

Some have been able to profit during these turbulent times. Scrooge McDuck saw this coming, and moved to China to help them with their investments (as well as to keep his money safe).

>>> We are no more "free" and are very much more socially backward than most 1st world countries.

Wrong, though I'd agree that our freedom has diminished greatly since FDR. If you think other nations are more free, you've not lived there, tried to own firearms there, or purchase property or a private aircraft there. Try being a doctor in Germany and charging what you feel your time is worth. Try getting timely treatment for cancer or heart disease.

Nations in Europe are now taking over their citizens' formerly private retirement savings in order to fund their nanny states. Free? Thieving fascists!

"Socially backward"? That's a queer thing to say. I do agree though, I like how France has outlawed the burka.

>>> Our National hubris needs to stop, or we will find ourselves far lower than we need to be when reality is no longer ignorable.

Meaningless rhetoric. What exactly are you talking about? Bowing to others isn't enough? You want Obama to kiss their feet? What?

I despise the blame America first rubes, gobblers of anti-American propaganda. They should choke on it. Our warfighters have been keeping the free world free for over six decades. It's not hubris. It is responsibility, valor, honor, and integrity.

Wise up!

Well there's 2 opposing viewpoints if ever i read them.

As an outsider, if you're interested in the outside view of America I can help..

America is no different from any other country in the world, it's made up of a huge number of "citizens" all of whom have (and are entitled to) their view of America's place in the world.

Unfortunately America (amongst the majority of countries) is run by politicians. If you want some (now) meaningless rhetoric try - "By the people, for the people". It's a fantastic ideal (but then again so is communism).

Unfortunately whilst the vast majority of people all over the world just want to live their lives, love their families and make the best of things, politicians the world over just seem to want to screw everyone, in any way they can.

I appreciate the strong sentiment w.r.t. "America - keeping the world safe" but TBH it's quite insulting, many parts of the world manage just fine without America's help (which ALWAYS comes at a price).

Politicians decide where wars are fought, not because "it's the right thing to do" but because there is money to be made or investments to be protected.

The one and only thing that i find disappointing about America's view of the world is just how biased and inaccurate it is.

Everything else about your country I absolutely adore but this stuff about America keeping the world free is total bollocks, we manage fine without you thanks.

If you want to respond and tell us about how you bailed us out of 2 world wars, please don't.. You were several years late for both and only pitched in when your interests were challenged.

I don't want to suggest that in any way the sacrifice of our men and women in previous and current wars are in any way unappreciated. Just setting the record straight.

Politicians take us into war, for political/financial motives and they couldn't give a toss about keeping the world safe.

Obviously this is only my opinion, it may well be that you disagree and you're entitled to that opinion but please don't tell me i am living a free life now thanks to America it's insulting to all of the Brits/Europeans that fought alongside you in the same conflicts.

Having had the great pleasure of serving alongside US forces in Gulf War I I am glad to know that many American's KNOW that these conflicts are normally politically motivated and that we are not always "in the right".

I consider myself to be about as pro-America as they come but even i draw the line at thinking the world owes you something.

Oh BTW, I didn't want to imply that the UK is any better (we're not) we should all stop "meddling" with other countries internal struggles... or at least be honest about what's in it for us.

The middle east is a classic (and lasting) example of why people ought to just leave well alone..

Blake, this may be your playground but you're the one with the jingoist head up his ass.

Try getting cancer treatment in this country without health insurance, then try keeping your insurance if you do get cancer. When some corporation decides you are no longer worth their effort try not going bankrupt solely because you got ill.

If Social Medicine is so bad why do Japan, the European countries, and Canada have longer average life spans and lower infant mortality rates than we do? People aren't dying on the streets there, quite the opposite in fact.

This may surprise you but gun ownership is an affectation, not a necessity, for the vast majority of human beings - you included. When was the last time you had to use your weapons to protect yourself from the government (the intent of the 2nd Amendment.) You absolutely can get a hunting license in Germany. You cannot, however, but a weapon solely designed to kill as many humans in as short a time as possible. I'm OK with that, as are most emotional adults.

Buying a plane? You gotta be kidding me. "Reality" indeed.

Jules, I think you are over thinking this whole thing about "America". Most people think in simplistic ways. They don't think nor remember the facts behind history. All Americans remember is helping the Europeans in WW I & II and our men dying there. All the facts the came before that is water under the bridge. Now, if you want to argue about WW II, I'm very knowledgeble about those facts so feel free to PM me. LOL!

Here is a fact that you are forgetting. Most people are going to be biased toward their nation. This is very true of Europe and the UK. Same with China, Japan, Australia, etc. Nobody is immune. So you shoudn't be surprised at America's attitude. At one point in history, the British ruled most of the world and they too had the same attitude as the USA, even more so. We're all the same, act the same, feel the same. We learned from the Brits after all! Hahah!

If we were to talk about freedom, Americans really owe their freedom to the French. But even then we like bashing them because we forget how we defeated the Brits. LOL! Does the world owe the US their Freedom, I believe many nations do. Europe? You bet! The Brits were not in any position to defeat Nazi Germany. In fact, if the US were not around, the Russians would have concurred Europe. Pick your poison: Russia or the USA? Russia swept into Germany in WWII and murdered/raped over 45k women, stole everything, then stayed for 40 years. I think they acted worse than the Mongol Hordes! The USA? A few military bases, loud and obnoxious Americans, and some noisy jets flying overhead. C'mon! Asia, owes the US an even greater debt by freeing them from the Japanese. Nobody in Asia had the military power to stand up to Imperial Japan. Regardless of the reasons why the USA went to defeat the Axis Powers, the result was Europe was freed from Nazi Germany, and Asia was freed from Imperial Japan. What do we ask in return? A Simple Thanks will do. You don't have to kiss ass or bow down. In return, we thank the UK for being there for us in recent history when we needed them the most. I can't tell you how much the US appreciates the alliance between the UK and the USA. Same with the Australians and the Canadians. We thank you for that.

Okay now back to your regularly scheduled Anti-Chinese League programming.

>>>The one and only thing that i find disappointing about America's view of the world is just how biased and inaccurate it is.

I don't spend much time reading these threads . . they make my head hurt.

But that phrase caught my eye and, in all candor, I think there is some merit to it.

I seem to spend a LOT of time working and talking to folks each week in about 4 different countries. We frequently have Buell owners from other countries at our house. It is always interesting and enlightening to see how America is viewed in various parts of the world.

It's incumbent on the participants to such a discussion to be aware there is no answer . . . only discussion. For it to work, no one needs abandon their views, but they do need to listen.

We are involved in a major global undertaking at Columbia University where I teach and I confess that my experience dealing with and talking to Buell owners around the world has been invaluable.

It will be easier, in the motorcycle community, to reach consensus on the best oil . . I'd imagine.

LOL

My Dad used to say that the worst thing that would have happened to us if we'd lost WWII is that the trains would run on time and we'd have BMW company cars instead of Fords..

Now, if Russia had moved in we'd have some bloody awful cars and the bikes would be a joke, now that's something not to be taken lightly.

I'm firmly in the camp of enjoying (very much) the special relationship the UK has with the USA, I believe the phrase that springs to mind is:

"Britain and America, two countries divided by a common language"

I just can't believe we (The UK) owned huge swathes of the world and ended up living on a wet, dismal, rocky sh*thole of an island in the North Sea.. what were we thinking?

I say we should rise up and take back the colonies!

Look what happened when you left the world? It turned to shit! LOL!

What really boggles my mind, and I say this with great respect to the Brits, is why did they leave? This once great empire is now down to the the British isles. Yes, I know, you still have your Commonwealth and I guess that's better than having to support them directly. It's as if the British that ruled the world changed and went on the opposite end. I wish the British that kicked so much ass back then would return. Think of what the UK and the USA can accomplish!

Be careful what you wish for.... LOL!

>>> I appreciate the strong sentiment w.r.t. "America - keeping the world safe" but TBH it's quite insulting, many parts of the world manage just fine without America's help.

That is provably mistaken.

We helped the Chinese deafeat their Japanese invaders, left Hong Kong to the Brits, unfortunately failed to oppose Mao, commies in Truman's cabinet helped push that policy.

We and the Brits and others helped the S. Koreans stay free. We're still there today strictly by invitation of the S. Koreans.

It wasn't just America standing for freedom, I'm not contending that. My comments should only be taken in context to the badmouthing anti-American statements which they rebut.

Do you think Taiwan would still be free and independent absent America's opposition to a Chinese takeover?

Panama?

The Philipines?

I don't claim anyone owes us anything.

I am happy and proud that America and other nations stand in defense of freedom.

I reject and erudite the idea that our warfighting and defense policy is governed by greedy self interests.

Would the Afghan people be better off, more happy back under the thumb of the islamist Taliban?

Kuwait?

The Kurds of Iraq?

The Shia of southern Iraq? Thanks in HUGE measure to our British brothers! I recently spoke to a man and his wife who were both from Basra. He spoke very plainly, "Getting rid of Saddam and his regime was truly a gift from God.". He said that Americans are incapable of understanding the suffering and constant fear and oppression that was a standard way of life under Sadam. People just disappearing was normal.

They are now free, despite all else that goal and result cannot be denied or belittled. It is honorable. Period.

Kosovo?

Bosnia-Herzegovina?

What do you think would the world be like today had America not invested so much in opposing Soviet Marxist aggression?

My intent is not to belittle our allies, just to stand up for honor and valor and the incredible sacrifices made by so many Americans in standing the line when called to face down tyranny.

When it comes to the defeat of Germany, I think due recognition must be given the amazing Russian people. It's a shame they had to endure Marxist tyranny for so long.

I think Australia and New Zealand were next on the list for Imperial Japan. If not for America, then what?

An isolationist policy or Swiss-like neutrality policy would have been easy to sell, and many in 1940's America were very much for it. We entered the war after being attacked. Learning from history, we shouldn't tary so next time. This explains Iraq in light of 911.

I still don't know what was meant by "socially backwards", but it is insulting.

Health is different from quality of medical care. Fat people who smoke and drink and suffer the consequences (diabetes, heart disease, cancer) reflect not on the quality of medical care available. For that you must measure achievement, the percentage of successful treatments for leading fatal diseases such a cancer and heart disease, the two biggies. America leads the world in quality of treatment for both.

Last I heard the hospital primary care physicians in Germany were on salary for no more than $80,000, as mandated by the gov't there in order to control health care costs.

I prefer freedom. It's going away. I'd like it back.

Guns don't matter to you? They matter here. We don't trust the rule of men. We VERY much appreciate the freedom to defend ourselves and our property against criminals. We value weapons that allow us to stand up to both.

We value our incomparably dominant military for the same reason, to oppose tyranny and threats to our freedom.

The folks of W. Berlin know better how they were kept free from Soviet conquest. So to the now free peoples of the former Soviet Eastern Block, Poland, Czech Republic. Then there is Geogia and the Ukraine. I'm sure I missed a bunch.

"Hubris"? Again I ask, what would you have Obama do, kiss their shoes?

You know what the bottom line is?

The world LOVES a winner and despises a loser.

Let's hope that freedom defeats oppression.

Given WW-II, and the cold war, I can't think of any. I'm sure I'm missing some. Argentina, Brazill, and Chile? Cuba! LOL.
