OK Boys...

How about we leave it like this:

Loveda & Puzzled - nice work. We all hope it holds together and won't cause any problems. Just please, if for whatever reason you end up selling the bike (I know it's not in your plans, but crap happens) I'm guessing you guys could be on the hook if it ever catastrophically fails on the new owner.

Blake: You've given your professional advice and strongly suggested they don't use the modified triple trees as their structural integrity has been compromised. If they suffer a catastrophic failure (god forbid) you will be safe in the knowledge you tried your best to convince them not to use the triple tree.

Me, I'd listen to a structural engineer - I've logic'd things out in the past only to be proven wrong. When it cones to saving a few ounces by modifying a tree or potentially having a serious crash, well you figure it out. Hit the gym, lose the weight that way. Go pee before a race. Do the body builder thing and dehydrate beforehand (within reason).

unlike some of you on this board IM NOT FAT... i like how you assume that the status quo of the buell riders are fat and we all can hit the GYM to lose weight...

LMAO

THIS IS WHY IM HESITANT TO, POST SHIT ON THIS BOARD CAUSE IT TURNS INTO SHIT LIKE THIS.....

It's kinda funny but it doesn't matter what your talking about there always seems to be the battle between the engineers and the applications guys, but I guess that's how the real ground breaking stuff gets made!

How can you be upset at someone telling you something looks imminently dangerous?
Be happy that several strangers have taken the time to warn y'all, that's a GOOD thing.

That said, y'all's work looks neat to me, definitely different.
Not something I would do, but I might think of mounting a cigar-lighter in there someday...
Even there, if I follow thru, I'll make a fresh piece out of billet, not alter a cast part.

Keep an eye on the modded parts and if/when they do fail, I hope it's not catastrophic.

1. The structural integrity of these triple clamps has been compromised unnecessarily.
2. The few ounces that you have saved will have no impact whatsoever on your lap times or ET. In fact, those extra ounces, placed high towards the front of the bike, might help to keep the front end down during hard acceleration. You might have actually hurt your times!
3. I think the original looks better.

As long as you make sure you get the buyer to sign such a document, no probs.

Wow. Feeling a little defensive are we?
I never stated or assumed you are fat or overweight - you read what you wanted to read. The vast and overwhelming majority of people can lose weight by going to a gym. The "go pee" and "dehydrate" are also common methods of losing weight for weigh-ins etc. Why do you think pro boxers and other weight dependent athletes usually weigh about 12-15 pounds more for a fight than they do at weigh-in a couple days before?

I didn't personally attack you, just made a few suggestions which you went completely rabid on.

*meh*

Oh well... wish you best of luck, and hope your modified tree doesn't fail (seriously, I hope it doesn't).

That (unfortunately) is a good example of part of the problem with posting on the net.

I am sure that what you meant to say was:

I assumed you did it for weight savings, because in my opinion it is not aesthetically pleasing.

Those little social niceties can make all the difference.. After all, it really is only your opinion that it's not aesthetically pleasing, that doesn't make it fact...

If one wants to use the stock top triple AND use aftermarket clip-ons, one is required to mill it to some degree because the integrated handlebar mounts get in the way of MCs and fluid Res.

The OEM handlebar position isn't really idea for road racing and track duty (it's too upright), so that's one pretty legitimate reason to take the mill to the OEM part.

I still think it's easier just to buy the B2 top triple.

Just removing the handlebar portions would be no problem.

Who wants to figure the loads acting on the triple clamps?

First we need measurements from axle along fork leg to mid-plane of each clamp. Two measurement. Anyone?

How much would you charge to have this weight savings applied to my bike?

PS
Love the look! Provides a very industrial feel.

I'm not sure, honestly. I don't remember exactly, but I looked into having my OEM top triple machined. IIRC, the handlebar portion is part of the structural design around how that portion of the clamp secures the fork tube.

I don't have one in front of me to look again, but someone else could easily enough.

Either way, the cost of the machine time for doing the job at my quality and finish expectations was more than just buying the B2 top triple, and that's a nicer piece, anyway.

I cut mine off with a power saw and rounded the edges with an angle grinder... Took about an hour all in.. Then I sprayed it black and I am perfectly happy with how it looks considering it cost nothing.

Then to be even more sacrelidgious I drilled two holes in it and added risers..

I admit that in comparison mine is "rough" but hey, it's mine and I am happy with it LOL

No it's OK I used "no more nails" to glue the risers on, that'll give it back all the strength I took out drilling those holes..

What the heck, the thing just holds the front end in place, not like it's serving any vital safety-critical function. Bending, shear and fatigue are just silliness so engineers can make more money. :/

Out of curiosity, how did you know when to stop removing material from the main body of the clamp? Why not remove more like Puzzled did?

No one up for calculating the loads? We just need the measurements requested above in my last post here.

I stopped removing material for a very complex reason... You ready??? It just felt right!!! Lol.

Actually I wanted to leave the what I thought were the primary load paths alone... But according to you ... That thin material on the top was that... Guess I was wrong... But at least it's not your bike Blake!!!

Are you one of those super smart people that won't leave a subject alone until you prove your point and everybody acknowledges you as the almighty???

Cause you just wanna keep dragging this on and on and on...

The only reason I keep adding to this thread is too see if it will break 100 posts....So we can keep this up if you want...

Yep . . ya see that's why you can never A-S-S-U-M-E.

I'd guessed:

  • interrupted by phone call
  • called to dinner

I was way off . .

Are we at 100 yet? . . a triple clamp is a terrible thing to waste.

Hey guys!

I just finished my new triple tree. The welds were a little tricky to get right, but a little patience goes a long way.

I'm thinking about having it powder coated to give it that finished look. What do you think?
