Has anyone else had this issue or know what might be the cause? I don't think its anything too major, yet. Twice now the bike has back fired when I go to start it up. It sounds like a guy shot going off. I will start up the next time I crank the engine over. I'm guessing its a combination of the EBARRR ECM and the RT-4 exhausts lack of back pressure. Does this sound like a major issue to anyone or just a nuisance that makes you change your pants on occasion. |

i think you'll find a lot of aftermarket exhausts will do that, i think monsieur adams mentioned something along these lines before, i know my own one does it, you'll get used to it even if the neighbours don't![](http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/clipart/happy.gif) |

Once I was coasting down a steep hill, and after it started going back up, I was getting ready to start the engine again, but there was a van parked illegally on the side of the road. There also was a guy standing next to it. So of course, I needed to start the bike back up otherwise I'll start rolling backwards. I fire it up, it didn't do the crank noise, it instantly started, made the loud *BANG* while I was right next to the guy. He ended up jumping up and through the open window of the van. I wish I had it on film! ![: D](http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/clipart/biggrin2.gif) |

It's a big bore twin, it happens. I've had it do that with both stock and custom pipes, although it's fairly rare. I've also heard it blow back through the intake and sound like it was going to take the airbox cover right off the bike. |

I don't think that's normal guys. Especially not a loud one that sounds like gunfire. It means the fuelling is wrong. |

Mine does it every time when stone cold. It does sound like a pistol being fired. If you are not expecting it, it will startle you. Drummer exhaust, and the guy from Ohio's tune. (Haven't got the EB R yet...) R |

Just to make sure we are talking about an actual backfire (gunshot sound) that causes the engine to not start, not the sonic boom when it starts right. |

Yes, a backfire is what I was referring to. For whatever reason, it sounds louder than normal, compared to when the bike actually fires and runs. I will agree that it's more prone to do it when it's cold out. |

An honest to goodness backfire is one that explodes back out the intake like Dean describes. Those are bad. They can ruin stuff, like seals, and air filters and sensors in the airbox. If the noise is coming out the exhaust, its just a loud ignition of mixture that was collecting in the pipes. |

Mine is out the exhaust. The last couple of weeks, it has been hard to start. In fact, you have to twist the throttle some to get it to fire. One time, A code came up about the charging system. |

From what I've been able to figure out is when cranking the ecm needs to find firing of number 1cyl. It does this by injecting fuel and firing every time the crank sensor is tripped, sometimes the exhaust valve is open causing the afterfire. The next time around its on compression and the ecm detects an increase in speed and it learns that is compression firing #1 and fires and injects fuel normally from there on. If the bike had a cam sensor then it would always know #1 compression. |

During my retuning for the Barker exhaust (was HMF), I found that when I had the idle area too lean...it would backfire during the initial crank revolutions during starting. I richened only one number value in four boxes..all is cured. Mike |
