Shoei RF-1100. Hands down the best helmet I have ever put on my head, fits like a glove. The speed shield comes off with ease and it's incredibly
light. Highly recommend it.

$249 right now and these used to be $600. If it fits your head, the best you can get. Read reviews, from a safety and comfort standpoint, I don't think there's anything better. Crashed in 2 of these and they saved my life both times, only helmet I'll wear at the track now. I've got 10 helmets, including Arai RX7 Corsair, Shoei X-11, AGV GP-Tech but 3 of these. Lightest helmet of my collection, by far.

My suggestion- read this article about helmets, especially the part about different head shapes:

http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-helmets/mot orcycle-helmet-faq.htm

Figure out what shape your head is, and shop for helmets accordingly. A cheap helmet that fits well is better than the most expensive helmet that fits poorly. After owning a nice Shoei (round shape) I figured out I have a "oval" head. Shark's RSI series is that shape; I'm on my second one and really like it.

If you don't know what shape a certain helmet is, Webbikeworld has a lot of helmet reviews and they always tell what shape the helmet is in the review.

I've had two crashes in Scorpion helmets. One *shattered* the shell so bad even the front of the helmet cracked -- literally the impact was transferred through the entire shell of the helmet.

The 700 series models in "less desired" graphics run $99 or so. It's a nice helmet with low noise, decent air flow, nice fit (if you are an oval) and good comfort.

+1 on the "find the helmet that fits" comment. That's really the most important.

If you have the bike show coming to town near you - good place to go to look and try on helmets.

this site is where I buy most of mine - often the owners have reviews on Youtube:

http://www.helmetharbor.com/

the young ones I ride with say the new Shoei Qwest is the one to go with - advanced aero features - not too costly

my tip - buy one that fits your head and if the maker offers optional check pads - use those to get it tight enough to prevent helmet movement due to buffeting.

Man, that's like asking what kind of oil to use...
But, there's been some great advice already. Check out the schedule for the International Motorcycle Shows www.motorcycleshows.com to see if one's close. Somewhere there you will be able to find every model.
GET ONE THAT FITS.
You can get some great deals in the vendor area at the track during bike week - go to Daytona.
www.HelmetHarbor.com is a great place to waste the afternoon watching reviews. I've bought one from Todd when I was in Phoenix at AZ bike week. Can't say enough good things about his shop. Another place is www.motorcycleclosouts.com
Support your local dealer if you can - mine don't carry what I'm looking for and if they can be talked into ordering it, usually want full list for the bother.
Currently, I have an Arai, Shoei and Bell and depending on things like temps, time of day (some tints will let me ride at night) and how long since the last haircut determine which one I grab.

+10 on the fit thing.

Suomy is my flavor. Great helmet.

I was never a fan of helmets until I got a Nolan N-100 modular, had 2 of them.
Gave one to my brother, the other is for the wife now.
I have an N-102C now and love it.

Nolan uses a "ski-boot" ratchet-latch that I am very "hooked" on now too.
Never will I cuss at a set of D-rings again, I can put on/pull off the bucket with one hand, wearing my gauntlets.

This is what I will be sporting in 2011.
I Got a great deal on it.
Retail $449.99
Paid $119.99 on closeout with free shipping.
This will be taking the place of my Shoei and my AGV.
I never thought I would find another helmet that fit me as well as the Shoei, but I did with this one.

Sorry forgot to let you know where I got it.
They have some other brands at great prices too other than just the Shark helmets.

I would search for a place with a good selection and go try on everything they have! I was torn between a few models until i did this and none of them ended up fitting me well... glad i didn't just mailorder one based on reccomendations personally!

I just got a new Shark modular. It's nice, fits good, pretty quiet, and I like the fact that I can fold the chin all the way around if it's really hot, and the two visors still work.

Tbolt98,
I agree 100%, good advice...I took a shot on the Shark and got lucky...I did do quite a bit of research and reading before I purchased it though, reviews, videos, and comparisons between other brands and models for fitment and likeness.

I have owned several different brands and models of helmets over the years, so that gives me a slight bit of comparison...This does not always hold true though, one brand and/or model from year too year can change substantially in their fitment and sizing.

Reevu helmet. Been riding with one for almost a year. Great lid. Can see what is behind you. 1125r mirrors give a great view of your shoulders and not much else. I don't know how I managed without it prior to buying.

Crabby - is anything made in the US anymore?
But, I did go look at my Star and can't find anything saying the country of origin.
It is probably the lightest and most stable at speed of any helmet I've worn. Venting is on par with my RF1000. Noise - my goodness! Need earplugs for anything over 40mph. I guess flowing all that air means something's got to give. With the earplugs, not a problem. Seems to run a little larger than is typical for the Shoei and Arai sizing. YMMV.

I wear an oval and in the past I found it hard to find a comfortable helmet that I could wear all day long. Well I found a great helmet, the AGV GP Tech, the best helmet I have ever owned. Just purchased an Arai Profile, caught one on sale. This is suppose to be the best oval out their. If it is any better that the AGV then that will be awesome.

Maybe I'm too literal?

+1 for the scorpion helmets. I started with an exo-400, then went to exo-700, and just bought and exo-400 for my girlfriend on sale for $50 new.

+1 for fit of course.

I also am a big fan of the Scorpion line. Fit my nugget best. Love the airflow as well. Especially in the hot sticky of Florida.

I went from the scorpion Exo-700 to shoei and never looked back. Although I was looking at the scorpion exo-1000, nice helmet, has built in sunglasses.
