Hard to say if $7K is a good deal or not ... if they offered you $7k on a MSRP $25K Harley ... then that sucks ...

Dealer offered my $5K on a used $9K 1200R ...

I think $7K is great for a trade in on a CR. Why does it matter what bike he's trying to buy? They were selling retail for that price not too long ago.

I would think that's a great price but it's true that the dealer will inflate that trade in value and inflate the price of the bike being purchased to make it 'look' like you're getting a great deal. In fact you could just be getting taken for a ride by a slick sales guy...

be careful and shop around is all I can say...

Depending on what you are buying, you can get more for trade in. It is all a numbers game, the raise your trade in to make it look like a better deal, you just pay for it somewhere else in the transaction.

Makes all the difference (not specifically what the model is), but matters on what the real value of the bike he's trying to purchase.

ie.
Bike purchasing: List is 25k, but the dealer will sell it outright for 22k.
But with trade they will only sell for 25k and give 7k trade for the Buell.
End result = dealer only giving 4k for the Buell.

That's why you always negotiate the purchase price first and then tell them the way you want to pay for it...but you guys are right the sales price of the other bike matters.

I have never traded in any vehicle as it just seems obvious you will never get the same amount out of a trade in as you would selling it privately.

I wanted to take a look at the sportsters and test ride a 883. There's a few used ones for sale and wanted to see if it's something I would like. There going for under 5k and probably lower as ridding season ends.

Have to say they feel smaller than they are. The lack of hp is ( at least for me) made up by the low end torque. Kind of reminded me of my Blast.

O and they will not go lower than msrp, or reduce fees.

Is this a dealer that has an active interest in Buell 1125's? Just wondering. And personally, going from an 1125 to a Sportster? I dunno man.....

If the bike you're going for is very different to the Buell, then you should be fine BUT take a long test drive to be sure. I'm talking 50 miles or more. This way you will know how hard the seat is, if your hands go to sleep, can the mirrors be set up right, any strange things about it, etc. Just sitting and looking at the replacement means nothing besides what poster to buy.
What do you have an eye on?

Dealer will not let me take the bike out all day. They don't have demo bikes. The sales guy let me take out a new 883, offered to let me try the 1200 and xr1200. But I did not have the time and did not want to waste his.

Don't know if I'm trading the 1125 in, the long hold on my last clutch leak really ticked me off. The buell dealer is more than an hour away. Thinking of picking up a used sportster but the 7k offer has me really thinking.

I got offered 5500-6000 for mine without even seeing it and I think that's the way I'm gonna go since none of these cheap bastards will pay for it

You do know the parts wait is pretty much the same for HD parts? Read XLforum and other HD boards. The only advantage to HD is more clueless dealers to screw things up for you. : )

Just saying, the grass isn't any greener with a different sticker on the tank.

I am thinking of the Marissa MIller nightster. See photo on website of the nurses uniform that makes this bike far more interesting.

It's always better and easier to sell it yourself. I'd sell it for 5k or even 4k before trying to trade it.

They don't have demo bikes

Bullshit. Every dealer gets demo bikes as part of the regular ordering process. The model you are interested in may not have *arrived* yet, but for them to say "we don't have demo bikes" is a line.

Go find another dealer. It's not 2001 anymore - the days of HD dealers saying "take it or leave it" ended years ago.

You should be able to rent any harley, more so if you're looking at the sport models. AND even if you pay for the rental this will tell you if it's what you really like!

Not universal Nigel.

We don't rent Sportsters or Buells but during the height of the season have Ultras, Road Kings, Dynas and Softails.
Sometimes, I think, V-Rods too.

We demo-ride almost any bike on the floor tho, Mon - Sat.
Usually un-chaperoned.

You will ALWAYS do better with a private sale than a trade-in.

the local HD shop also gives a $1000-$500 in store gift cert for the purchase of a new bike, 15% off of labor and 10 off of parts for military peeps.

no demo bikes, but you can test ride anything they have on the floor.

still havent made up my mind. i spent 6200 on the cr so the 7k offer really threw me off.

Joe, I was going to trade it on the used XT. They told me $7000 for the XT and give me $2000 for my 1125r with 2800 miles. I laughed and hung up. They called me back and said the GM would sell me the XT for $6500 but didn't want my 1125r. The salesman I talked to didn't even know what a 1125r was! I really wish Erik never got involved with HD

Yeah, I can't believe they're still sitting on that XT.

Good on you for not getting rid of the 1125, though. Owning both, I can accurately say that they are totally different bikes...and I'm so glad I own both because then I don't have to try and make one take the place of the other!

You'll find an XT somewhere, for a good price. I'll keep an eye out for one for you, too. : )

Not to be blasphemous or anything, but a Suzuki V-Strom 650 or 1000 would be a good bike to check out as an option to the XT. Good clean lightly used ones around for $4000 or so. I've got a naked-ized 650 and love it. This is after 75 motorcycles and 42+ years riding and I'm about 215lbs dressed to ride.

The Buell 1125 has issues for sure, thats why I got the extended warranty, but I can understand why the "this things got to go" feeling is out there. As a dealer would you want to warranty a bike with this kind of reputation? That's why some don't want them. Yes its a fun machine but long time in the shop fixes are a real off put for many. The common we don't know how to work on it dealer thing is a pain. Its a bike to fix yourself because of this. If you can't then what?
Hey $7,000 trade in? Very worth thinking about......Harley parts are easier to get than Buell, and the local guy can work on it.
I'm keeping mine for a while yet!

The only problem that I had was the battery kept draining. They put in a 2009 cluster and it fixed the problem. I haven't had any issues at all. I guess I'm one of the few lucky ones.

I've had several issues with Loretta, but 3 weeks in the shop over 3 years is OK for me.
She's off warranty now and I am confident in my ability to keep her tip-top since I've been the servicing tech since day-one.

I don't have to work on her often and when I do, it's a joy to work on something designed to be worked on.

My Ulysses is now my daily rider but I am taking Loretta to the grave with me.
