I tried to find something about this to no avail. My tach is down at 6 o'clock at idle. If I rev it it goes in the right direction but is 5-6k 'light' of what it should read. Is this common? '09 CR by the way.
Thanks,
Murf

something is wrong, how long have you had the bike? did it just start doing this, and is it under warranty. I would say you most likely need a new instrument cluster.

It's possible the needle has slipped on the spindle, the weight of the needle sliding it down until it bottoms out..

Unfortunately it sounds like it'll need to be dismantled and re-attached (so in other words a new IC is needed).

I can't think of any other reason it's do that.

I assume that with the ignition off it's settled pointing straight down? When you turn the key on does it "sweep" and if so does it do the full range 'cause if it does it won't be what I described above..

I had this happen in the other direction. It read about twice what it should have. It fixed itself and has not come back.

No_rice has a pic of his bike at like 15k RPM. Time for a new cluster.

Mine did something similar once. Got stuck at 4k when it was off or somewhere near that. I think that's when my IC and battery were both replaced.

I tried to take a look at the guts but didn't see anything obvious. I can't figure out why just the upper lights don't work- Neutral, turn indicator, and high beam indicator- none work. And of course now that I tried to 'fix' it- the tach doesn't even work in the wrong zone.

Question; with an ebr ecm will any old cluster replacement work?

Thanks,
Murf

Mine did that with about 2000 miles or so. It read way high. I shout it off and back on several times, each time it settled a little lower. After about 5 on-off cycles it was back to normal and hasn't acted up since. Wierd, but it seems fine now. I did notify my dealer so they had a record of it just in case it came back later.
