Just received the November 2010 issue of Cycle World and on page 10 is an article entitled, "Buell Fights Back". Erik Buell is building something in East Tray, and it's more than a few race bikes.

According to the article "Erik Buell Racing is working on a new streetbike that will be positioned much like those batch builder such as Bimota. It will be powered by the sixth-generation version of the liquid-cooled V-Twin used to power the production 1125RR and race-only 1190RR."

It will be a true exotic using the best parts and techniques for low-volume production, and almost certainly will be the lightest 1200cc Twin in production. And Erik is excited: "We could do some amazing things with an American company that didn't have any restrictions placed on it". Obviously referring to not repeating the problems and limitations of his relationship with HD. Also sounds like they are looking for sponsors and investors but the plans are underway....very cool.

Check out the article. Sounds pretty exciting. Looking forward to the next bike from Erik Buell Racing. BTW - the new bike will not be called "Buell" since Harley retains ownership of that name.

We thought this would happen, it's in his blood. Can't wait to see the new streetbike from Erik Buell Racing.

I can't believe that harley owns the name "Buell". Harley should be brought up on charges for what they did to Erik Buell.

Remember that Erik did sign all these agreements with Harley. I don't think he is starving, and was very likely compensated very well during his tenure at H-D.

I still cannot grasp why HD will not sell the rights to the 1125 and patents involved. It's not like any of the technology will ever make it into a Road King.

They seem to be willing to license pieces to EBArrrr, why not just bundle it up and sell for what HD believes they can make from licensing? It seems that HD could use an infusion of $$.

Actually, HD should give Erik Buell Racing the same deal that they gave the Italians for MV-Agusta...pay me @4 dol, I give you the company "BUELL" back + $35 million for good measure! That's HD business genius.

Yes please. I may even forgive HD for all the BS after that.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

"Less than two years after buying an Italian motorcycle manufacturer for $109 million, Harley-Davidson Inc. essentially paid the previous owners to take it back.

Harley recently returned MV Agusta to its Italian owners for 3 euros, or about $3.98, a company spokesman confirmed Monday.

As part of the deal, Harley had to put 20 million euros, or about $26 million, into MV Agusta's coffers before selling it, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing documenting the sale.

That money will be kept in escrow to provide the Italian company access to operating capital for 12 months, the filing noted.

Harley acquired MV Agusta in October 2008 for $109 million, including $70 million in assumed debt"

So the question becomes: "What will the new brand name be?"

It's nuts that HD would do more for the eye-talions than for one our own red-blooded Mericans. Just goes to show how far off center HD's compass has swung.

The CEO of Harley will be speaking at The Ohio State University tonight. If you are local you can ask him yourself. If not and I get a chance I'll ask him for you

HA. I would love to hear his answer. "Mr. Wandell, can you explain the business case for burying a saleable asset, and turning away buyers at time when HD was in financial distress and had to borrow money from the federal government?"

I think I would add to that with:

"and then almost immediately giving away a company that you had paid $109M for and invested a further $26M during the same timeframe?

How does it make an economic sense to take both HD shareholders and US Taxpayers money and give it to the Italians whilst simultaneously laying off a group of skilled American cratfsmen who could have used that money to generate greater revenue for HD and further ease the burden on the same US Taxpayers?"

Hell - I'm not even American and that pi55es me off.

Knowing what I know now about how everything at Buell was such a compromise because of Harley, in hindsight I'm not convinced Wandell didn't do us all a favor.

It know it's counter-intuitive, but from a racer and track junkie's perspective, I'd say I'm better off now than I was with Harley in the mix.

And a huge number of . . . until then uninterested parties, both motorcycle and financial community, have taken notice.
