Hi,
Long time Buell(s) owner... but have not owned a 1125. Found an 08 1125r for at a good price and was think of trying one. I heard the 08's have some issues, different heads, etc... but I've been reading about people having good luck with them as well.

Can anyone offer any suggestions in what I should look for?
What ECM upgrades should it get.. etc?

I dont want to waste anyone's time either... If this has been topic has been discussed before... please send me the link.
Thanks!

Get the 08, at least the stator works properly! I finally have all the bugs worked out of mine and its great. I also have an 09 Uly for my back up bike.

The Erik Buell Racing ecm isnt a must but I think it makes the bike run like it was designed to. It just feels so much happier. It runs cooler and smoother in the low rpms. The 08s dont seem to be having the stator issues that the 09s do but I am not really that worried about it because I believe that a fix is on the horizon. I love my 09 1125. I have no regrets

Isn't it the injectors that are different?

Fuel injectors are different, some mapping changes in the ecm, color changes and maybe a few other "upgraded" parts like the stator and the clutch puck/seals. The clutch upgrade is good, 12k miles on mine, no leaks. Not sure of the stator deal, I've got an 08 and I'm not giving it up. 20k miles so far, runs like it should. Fast and smooth. Get the race ecm and have it checked for updates/recalls.

To me only reason to not get the 08 is if you don't want black.

Otherwise, any yr I'd recommend the E.B.R. ECM, for $250 you can't beat the improvement. Injector difference is pretty meaningless & you can swap them in minutes if you want.

09's seem to have some freq of stator issues as mentioned, 08 could develop a weepy clutch hole, as mentioned, both have remedies - although the stator one seems like it needs another iteration of a fix from posts here.

I wouldn't shy from any yr, or think any yr is better than another. If want red or white, can't get an 08, otherwise, miles/condition/price are the things to make you decision on. Good luck & hope to be welcoming you aboard the Buell train soon!

Most (all?)08s don't have a gear indicator in the IC (not that big a deal really) and different injectors (as stated above) - but you could "upgrade" to 09 injectors if you wanted to (not that you should want to).

An Erik Buell Racing ECM is one of the best upgrades in terms of value for money, the 08 stator has a lower power output but that's not neccessarily a bad thing as a number of 09 stators are failing (sometimes repeatedly).

Either bike is fantastic fun!

You might want to check to see if the one you're buying has be de-noided and if there's any frame insulation in place...and if it doesn't have the cali-can kit fitted I'd probably suggest getting one on there, or you may want to let the bike "air" outside for a while before parking it up at night.

Some of the early model 08's had IC electrical drain problems, solution was upgrading to the 09 cluster. You get the gear indicator with the upgrade.

I wish my 08 would have IC drain problems : (

I don't care about the gear indication but would love the voltage readout!

I'll echo what everyone is saying. The '08 is a great bike with the Erik Buell Racing ECM. It is the first thing you should buy for the bike. In my opinion, it is a MUST if you want it to run properly. It will run cooler and smoother compared to stock and improves driveability.

I say go for it. You'll love it.

The 08 cluster is better, it remembers what tab you left it on, while my 09 makes me switch over to Instant MPG each time I turn the key.

I get the improper LFL on my 09..

Remembering what tab you were on is a neat feature... I didn't know I was missing that, wish I hadn't read that now LOL

My '08 doesn't remember what setting I left it in...Is it supposed to? Every time I start it, it is on the instant and always have to toggle over to temp once it has warmed up...

Yea, mine too, I have to toggle when I start up as I like having it on temp during the summer, etc. And MPG when I'm playing the "can I break 40mpg game".

If you are on a stock ECM, original cluster, it will flash COLD then after it warms up will go to your last tab. If you have a race ECM, it will go right to your last tab. Unless you are that one guy who wants the race ECM to flash COLD.

Once I was able to keep it between 70 and 85MPG on the instant gauge for about half an hour. Then the truck got off the highway : (

Mine is the original...July of '08 build and it has always went to the mpg. I always have to click it over to the temp after the "cold" is done flashing. It has never stayed where I last left it...wish it would!

Thanks for the feedback! Hmmm... Maybe I can find a dealership that would let me test ride one.... Or do I wait for the 1190RS.

I've put in over 14k miles in the past year on an XB12S and XB12X, and just got on a 1125R this month. The other bikes are very fun and great performers, but the 1126 makes you feel like Superman! It is quite amazing.

I have an '08 and have absolutely no problems with it. The cluster looks the same, it doesn't leak/weep, runs like a champ in all environments (extreme heat, cold)...almost as good as my BMW! It's comfortable too which is a bonus. It does suck some gas but that may be due to the operator rather than the equipment. Put an HMF and a K&N on it and RIDE!
