Hey all you with experience in these matters - I just got my service manual last night (have not even broken the plastic on it yet) but will have to remove the front wheel from my R tonight.

Is it straight forward or are there some BadWeb tricks to make it easy for me?

Painters tape on the spokes where the brake caliper can rub and do damage to the paint. There's 2 notches on the back of the caliper, those line up with the spokes. Take the caliper off first, tie it back out of the way. You do NOT need to break the line loose, just pull it away and tie it back. Everything else is pretty straightforward.

Torque wrench and a 7/8" socket to reinstall the axle with the tool in your under-seat tool bag. Antisieze the hell out of the axle to prevent the bearings and threads from corroding on the axle.

It is very easy, hardest part is getting the brake caliper off

Look in your tool bag under the passenger seat for the stubby allen to remove the axle. 22 mm I think, so having a large socket will help, along with a breaker bar or 1/2" ratchet. The threads are marked on the fork leg. They are LEFT hand threads, so turn it clockwise to loosen it.

x2 on the pinch bolts!!! Other than that, the only real pain is getting the wheel spokes lined up with the notches on the back of the caliper so you can remove the wheel. And that's not even that much of a pain.

DONT OVER TIGHTEN THE AXLE WHEN YOU RE-INSTALL THE WHEEL, it will reduce bearing life massivley.

how are you guys lifting the bike for this? can the muffler handle it like the xb's?

I use pitbull stands myself, had to make the pin (.700" pin if you're curious, the standard one is .750") for the front, made spools for the rear. Standard stuff otherwise.

You can hang from an overhead rafter in the garage. Ropes, ratchet straps. Piece of cake... but you can ALSO put the kickstand down, jack up under the opposite footpeg, lifting the front end that way. JUST BE CAREFUL - pretty easy to knock the bike over if you're not careful.

I'm still at work, but I've been reading the SM says "rotate the fork leg caliper mounting lugs to clear the caliper."

Does this mean to spin the front fork a few degrees counterclockwise (looking from the top downwards)?

yes it is. you don't need to remove the caliper, the wheel slides right out when you align the spokes with the spaces in the caliper. once it slides off the rotor rotate the fork leg a little to clear the caliper and pull off the wheel. might want to spread the pads a little to make assembly easier and don't forget to pump the brakes when your done. triple trees should be strong enough to hold it as well thats how i did mine

You can certainly lift and hang it from either triple clamp. PLENTY of strength there.

Loosen everything just a little BEFORE you lift it up in the air. If you don't, you'll soon know WHY you shoulda.

I went to the local tool retail stores tonight in vain for a 22mm allen/hex. The official "HD Tool" is $22 and 2 weeks away in someplace called Wisconsin(??) I'll try some mechanic jobber stores tomorrow.

Dean- I guess that tool must have slipped out of my beneath the seat tool bag!

Found an old 13/16 spark plug socket.
The hex on the spark plug socket is 22mm.

Better than waiting 2 weeks for delivery and prob good enough in a pinch. I haven't tried it yet but fitment appears good.

One other thing, before removing the caliper, push the pistons in. It will be a lot easier to remove the caliper without scratching your wheels!

i bought a 7/8 allen wrench at the local hardware store. of course they are also an oil field supply store as well-lots of big tools! iirc i paid 25 for it.

I guess there's always room for more! Don't actuate either of the brakes when there's no disc to clamp on (wheel removed). It will force the pistons out and then you've got a mess!!

You can also use muffler as a jacking point. Strap bike to your lift became it will fall over. Round object on flat!!!! Pretty easy job and will save u lots of money doing yourself.
