Last month I was at E.B.R buying a bunch of parts and had some free time to roam the facilities. I was surprised to see a lot (> 30?) of engines still in their shipping crates. I asked Michael about the possibility of buying a complete new engine built as an 1190. Apparently there has already been some thought on this.

If you’re interested in buying an engine with 106 mm pistons and a 2 mm longer (I’m certain he said Carrillo) rods you need to let E.B.R know. I already told them I’d buy one.

We’re not talking about a motor with the lightened crank or RR heads. It’s my understanding that RR heads cost way too much to include on a low dollar motor like this. But this would be a good club racer motor.

If you have a suggestion on what else this motor should have, please comment. I’d like to see the price kept down and still get more hp in a reliable motor for my track bike. But be sure to tell E.B.R so they know there really is interest in this motor.

1190 motor would be fun, I'm assuming this is instead of any upgrades for the current 1125 motor? Owning an 1125 now, I would be VERY interested in making it a little more stout. If thats not an option? Of course I would love to give E.B.R. my money for an 1190 motor.

I wrote them last week and asked this question but no answer. Any idea what they are wanting for one?

Maybe, but IMHO, one would need to upgrade the cooling system as well.

It would be great to have perhaps more than one option. Say a 160 rwhp option and a 180 rwhp option?

So what the scoop on pricing? Maybe silly to ask, but any warranty on these motors?

Depending on the asking price and the expected difference in RWHP and what type of upgrades (if any) would be necessary to swap the engine appropriately, it might be interesting.

I know I would be interested, but probably would never follow through, due to the costs and whats involved with doing the upgrade. Also, my Blast has enough power for 95% of my riding : )

I'm going to put a new motor in my track bike this winter hopefully. I'll certainly check into it.

When I asked Michael if the price would be $5,000, he emphatically said no. Of course this doesn't mean a thing if I misunderstood him.

Jim, that sounds like a good start.

an 1190 motor would be $10 grand plus i'm guessing!

This is a good thread I'm consider head work this winter, so I'd take the RR heads over the bore/stroke any day, I would have to think it would be more race budget friendly than another engine.. Theres a lot of power in head work and if it's like any other motor you take little reliability out when you stroke it especially without a lightened crank... and 2mm more I would assume the compression ratio would go up with the stroke.. yeah that engine would be plenty good for club racing... I'll def. look into it.

Americanmadexb, I'm sure the heads on the 1190RR cost more than the motor I'm talking about.

Buell101, please keep us posted on what that head work costs you.

depends on the price, and if i need an engine at that specific time.

ive already planned on picking up a hopped up engine from them when i blow up my stock mill.. the question becomes how much longer my stocker will last!! 21k and counting!!

Not sure if you ever will. Mine has 40,000 miles on it, and 10k of those are at WOT on the track.

She's a little "soft" now, but runs great.

10,000 track miles!!

That motor sounds like a grand idea. But I'm guessing you'd have to update the cooling system, fuel pump covert to a chain drive and have to do a full exhaust. Now that's out of my budget I'd rather just buy a second bike and have two of the second best bikes ever built IMO first one being the Britten v1000.

I'm much less excited about the 1190 motor than I am about the rest of the bike. Big motors are cool, but age quickly, and it's awfully well sorted technology at this point.

Its the revolution of "the rest of the motorcycle" that Buell can finally do now that they are really free that I am really excited about seeing.

There was talk about EB coming out with an 1190 upgrade kit at one point. EB mentioned it at SBK in May, but I haven't heard squat since. Anyone know?

Like Jdug, about a third of my miles are track duty. The 1125 still pulls my big butt around the course pretty well, so no upgrade for now, but if the price is right......

Jdugger where do you find time to do 10,000 track miles? Do you live at the track?

The rules of FAST...

A. Speed is expensive...how fast do you want to go?
B. Nothing works without modification.
C. Weak parts announce themselves loudly.
D. The road to performance is paved with broken parts.

Fortunately, the 1125 has been wrung hard by a LOT of people with remarkably few engine failures. That alone proves the design....the remaining problems will be developed out if the piece continues to be developed.

From great minds come great ideas...to have come this far from a shed behind the house is as Court would say..."Amazing".

I'm definitely interested, but probably wouldn't be looking to buy until spring. Right now the plan is to save and hope for a complete 1190 street bike, but an engine swap would be a good alternative.

Good lord, what would I do with more power?

From a scientific perspective and my general fascination with making things mechanically "better" I love the idea but I have absolutely no use for any more motor than I have.

could we just get the pistons, jugs, heads and cams? are our rods a press on or clip style at the piston?

More power would be good. They bumped me up to the A group and now the fast guys on 1000s blow by on the straights.
Michael at Erik Buell Racing talked like there could be stages. 1190 big bore, better rods, porting if you like with stainless valves for MUCH less than the full race heads they use. Of course they have race ECUs already (best mod I've done so far). I didn't ask price nor did ask if that means you have to run a chain, I'd rather not.

I would be interested in an upgrade if my stock motor ever throws in the towel.
60,000 miles so far and still going very strong, so it might be a while.

Absolutely as long as it takes pump gas and I don't have to get it rebuilt every 6 months....ie, probably exactly what will be going into the 1190RS
