okay it's been talked about by a few folks. I experienced an intermittent rear brake lock-up/unintended application today. seems to have stopped(haha) for now. for those of you that have had rear brake caliper failures do you recall if it was a once applied it was fried situation or was there some intermittent issues before the finally?

Someone wrote in to Cycle World (or was it Motorcyclist) about having the same problem on two bikes. The reply was that it was likely rider error--the rider accidentally resting his foot slightly on the rear brake pedal while riding, causing the brake fluid to boil and making the brake engage unexpectedly.

This may or may not be the case with you but I figured I'd mention it. Do you ride with the balls of your feet on the pegs, or with the arches on the pegs? If it's the latter, you may want to try the former and see if the brake problem goes away.

Mine was a noticeable loss of power, took less than 50 miles to totally smoke the rear pads, caliper and rotor. Felt like I was riding a V-Rod or something heavy with no power at all.

Boogie, are you saying that the rear brake locked up on you after you released the pedal? Or did the rear brake just lock up on you without you doing *anything*?

The former situation is alarming, the second situation is freaking scary... please clarify. I've read various accounts concerning the rear brake on this forum, but I can't see a coherent problem coming through like you hinted.

How comes you didn't stop once you felt a problem, 50 miles is a long way dude ?

It was less than 50 miles (might have only been 25) to home, at midnight, back roads and it just felt down on power, not "OMG, the rear brake just locked up on me!" and when I got home, I looked. The rotor was purple and gold. I rarely ever use the rear brake, the only times I do is at stoplights. I typically ride with the balls of my feet on the pegs.

Ah I see, is this gonna be another 1125 quirk in the making then, never use my rear brake either, but I did remove some fluid from the reservoir so it reads just above low, just incase this senirio arises

D,

That's pretty unusual. I know I've nearly lost my bike off a loading ramp because I went for the back brake and had forgotten to pump it up after the last tire change. Well, the reason it was on the ramp was I was changing the tire AGAIN!

So, I know it's normal for the rear brake to not even engage if you don't touch it, even after several track days. And it's hard to imagine it would get any wear at all when there's airspace between the pads and the rotor...

Jim, that's what I thought too. Shoulda been nothing touching. The pads literally crumbled and fell apart. Fluid was clear/clean. I know I used it once that particular day, sitting still at a stop light, never touched it after that.

I had a little bit of this issue. investigating showed my rear master cylinder to be very sticky in the mid-stroke for some reason. after a good bleed with full travel that went away, and I added a spring return setup so it shouldn't happen again. the spring return is a must!

rocket i have that copy and actually i moved my peg downward to avoid that very syndrome.

adams that's what it felt like to me too i heard it at first then felt the drag

i did lift up on the brake pedal and that seemed to help but i know for a fact that i was not resting on it.

will keep an eye and ear on it and see what happens
