Mine failed around 6000 miles with no harness upgrade. It failed very suddenly, too. I'm hoping a better fix comes out soon, even if the parts currently on order for mine are the same as what failed. Maybe the 2008 stator is the fix, but we will have to find an oem to build up a batch.

Got my bike back. Don't have time to really put miles this weekend. They told me they were gonna take off the harness but today said they couldn't per HD. Wish me luck.

2009 CR, got the harness upgrade at around 2000 miles and stator is failing now at 2900 miles.

Milt,
The "gizmo" is simply an ECM controlled relay that controls when 1 of 3 legs of the stator is functioning by breaking the connection between the stator and the regulator/rectifier. The ECM grounds the coil side of the relay in the new circuit. The new circuit gets power from the active intake solenoid circuit.

Mine went down yesterday. 2009 1125CR, roughly 8300mi as I recall.. maybe 8500, don't remember. No official word on the cause but service manager and I both assume its probably the stator. Was presenting some electrical issues for a month or two before, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did! Was hoping it would hold out until the end of summer : (

No idea when the harness upgrade was done, previous owner had it done.

2200 miles. Now at 3500 miles and a bit shaky in urban heat.

Interesting observation this morning....

Battery light stayed on when I turned the bike on this morning, but as soon as I started it (started fine) it went off. Let it warm up and as soon as the normal display came up switched to voltage and temp, voltage was good either 13.7 or 13.9 but the temp was at 159. I thought 165 was the "operating temp" when "cold" stopped flashing....

150 is when COLD stops flashing.

Is the real engineering question "how can we keep our stator cooler" ?

new circuit gets power from the active intake solenoid circuit

Aaaahh.. Out of interest is the IAC circuit a single wire somewhere near the intake tube as now that I have mine back I have found a broken wire down there that I can't get to reach it's plug (there's about 4" of air between them).

I wonder if that's it... maybe they pulled it up to get to it an it pulled out of the plug..

Reasonable speculation? Yes. Best current guess? Probably, though I don't know if the root solution is lowering the heat or improving the construction.

Real engineering question? I don't think we have enough verifiable data to say that. Real engineering solutions are expensive and hard, and require a lot of rigorous data.

When Ducati had issues with its charging system it was determined to be a combination of things like an underrated regulator/rectifier, single phase system and too narrow gauge wire. One of the symptoms was fried connectors above the rectifier, one of the connector wires started at the rectifier and ended up at the stator, on the other side of the bike. Obviously too much heat was building up and one part of the fix was to upgrade the above wire to 10 gauge while doing the same to other associated wires in the electrics. There was an upgrade wire kit developed for this purpose.

My 09r, build date 12/08 was flawless for 9,028mi , and just outa the blue charge volts started dropping and the warning lights were coming on 3mi from my home.

The theory goin' around about "not keeping the revs up" doesn't apply to me, so it's got to be the bike and its components.

I was having a compressor motor checked and the guy in charge turned out to be an old acquantance. I asked him if he still rode and he told me he had a Tuono. I mentioned I had a CR and also mentioned I was worried about the stator. This guy works with electric motors every day and is a bike guy too, and he told me some dielectric grease in the gang plug at the ECM might help cure the problem. Something about the voltage surge overheating the system as the leg activates. Apparently he had read or heard something like that. Does anyone think this might help a bit, cause I sure don't know.
