Can someone help me understand the Spreadsheet dyno run data? I am currently reviewing worksheet(FMF) and the HP and Torque values are NEGATIVE in Stock and Race_Untuned from 4500-4900 RPM. What does that mean?

There's no question that Al et al. did a fantastic job. Thanks again, Al, I enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) reading your report.

But Al's conclusion is interesting: "Regardless of the legalities, many of these pipes should probably not be operated on public roads, or at least not in quiet hours or urban environments."

Wow. I knew that these exhausts would be loud, but I didn't realize that they would be this loud...

So I'm really curious about:

1) how much the Barker exhaust quiets down with the optional insert.

2) whether such an insert is in the works for the Drummer or KEDA systems.

3) how good the Free Spirits systems (full or slip-on) are... I know they are reasonably quiet and look fantastic, but I'm not sure about performance.

If anyone can chime in with answers (or PM me), I'd appreciate it...

Danny,
See point 4 on page 23 in the report. Where most runs were cranked to WOT at 4K, with "real" data commencing at 4500, the FMF was cranked at 4500 with real data commencing at 5K. That happened because Terry was a bit late arriving the shop Tuesday AM of the testing, and we were already behind due to the rain on Monday, so Jim and I started. The data on the FMF should be ignored below 5K. Only the FMF has this error in it. Terry ran the dyno for all the other pipes and runs.

CrazyHawk, see table 2, currently on page 23. I HAD the tables all in a row, then the general notes about the results. Somewhere along the way the notes got place between tables 2 and 3, I'll fix that with the next revision so the exact page might change. But it'll still be table 2.

I wish we'd had more time to play with the noise inserts offered by Barker and FMF. I know Kevin has them for the XB drummers, not sure about the 1125, I'll ask him.

Everyone has their own perception of what is "too loud", regardless of what the legal agencies say. MY perception is that a few of these pipes cross the line from a "cool aggressive sounding pipe" into the "rude and inconsiderate" level. YMMV.

I inserted the quiet core that came with the FMF, but it is still loud. Don't think there is much difference in dB-level, but the tone gets a higher pitch and sounds even more aggressive IMO.

Mr. Barker - which insert is the one described on your website as the one that only loses 1.5 HP?

What is your current lead time for delivery on pipes?

Also, please consider wholesaling your pipes to Al at American Sport Bike. I would like to buy one of your exhausts but also would like to support Al.

Thanks

Jeff

Hmm another thought I just had...If I'm happy with the results of the Erik Buell Racing FMF tune running the Barker exhaust, should I just get the FMF tuned one so I'll know exactly what to expect or go for the Barker tuned one?

Hey Al, I know the real reason it took you so long to get the data compiled. JT from Austin Tx. aka Chicken Little. I'm so sorry I ever gave him your number. Please forgive me.

I would recommend the fully tuned one. I would guess there's a little more hp/tq in each pipe and they've already done all the legwork. It won't cost any extra to get a pipe specific tune.

Thank you, Jeff.
And Thanks Tim...

We're working on a first order with Barker's now. I've got the basic product up on the web site, but still need to configure the options...You can mention it with order comments for now and we can take care of it. See http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/16285.html

The reason for getting the Barker specific tune is less about top end performance and more about drivability/consistency. There may be bit more top end in the Barker specific tune than the FMF one, maybe not. But AFV stability and overall smoothness will likely be better o the matched tune. AS a WOT test, the shootout really didn't evaluate that at all, that would've been way out of scope.

Thank you to all the folks who had a hand in this herculean task. It is useful and interesting to all of us 1125 owners even if we are not in the market for an exhaust.

About 4 weeks ago, tired of riding a sewing machine, I purchased a Jardine RT5. It is beautiful, extremely well constructed, light weight and adds tons of power to the bike. It is also painfully loud to me while riding, so loud that venturing out without ear plugs is not possible. Oddly, none of my non-riding neighbors or friends think it is obnoxious. That may be a function of living in SD because we are used to loud pipes on the cruisers passing through on their way to Sturgis.

My wife, God bless her, finally tired of all the whining and moaning, told me to get something quieter. Ever the obedient spouse I ordered a Barker and installed it yesterday with the Quiet Core in place.

Uff da! It is semi truck loads quieter and still seems to be as powerful as the Jardine. The build quality is easily the equal of the Jardine and it is easier to install. "Easier"} here is a matter of just a few degrees because no one would call the Jardine difficult.

But. The heat the Barker throws off will boil water 20 feet away. So the Quiet Core was removed and viola! the problem is solved. Even without the QC the Barker is quieter than the Jardine, with a lower, more pleasant sound.

On both of the exhausts the stock ECM and filter were in place with no adjustments to anything. There is popping on decel with both pipes, and it is about the same. There is also surging at in-town speeds. Yes, my intention is to get the Erik Buell Racing ECM and a K&N filter. From the dyno runs in the test they will be well worth the money.

The 1125 feels way lighter when riding, much more than the 13 lbs or so lost when changing to the aftermarket exhausts. Since the bike has quite a bit more power that is probably to be expected, but the bike also feels lighter at rest. Go figure.

In no way are my comments meant to be at odds with those of the folks who did the comparison. They did a wonderful job.

The Jardine is on eBay.

Electroman -- I got your pm but when I replied back I got a permenant failure reply from the server. I also tried sending you a pm directly, not sure if it went through or not.
If nothing else, send me a pm again with a number to call you back at. The pipe you asked about IS available and for the price I mentioned. Not sure on shipping, but we can work the details later.

Westmoorenerd,

Every exhaust needs is own tune, dont try to swap exhaust with one tune. It always need to be adjusted to a specific exhaust. So my thought get the tune that belongs to the slip-on you use.

Do the aftermarket exhausts let the engines run any cooler with reduced back pressure?
