Just a heads up- I don't know if anyone else has f***ed up too but just wanted to pass on a word of caution. Today while removing my rear seat cowl to secure my helmet I took off the rear seat then placed it back down over the battery compartment, while hooking up my helmet I moved the rear seat just right and almost welded it to the battery by hitting the front bracket of the rear seat to the terminals- ZAP! . Luckily there was no damage. I did not think the bracket was wide enough to hit both = and + but guess I was wrong.

Does yours not have a plastic guard around the positive terminal?

How do you secure you helmet there, do I have to add something or is it already set up?

Froggy- I had to "modify" the cover for my tender/aux power. Unfortunately I hit the 1/2" which is exposed. Oops.

Coco- There is a alloy hook on the right side of the bike under the passenger cowl/seat. Remove the cowl/seat, take the D-rings of your helmet and hook them onto the alloy hook (your helmet will be shield forward with the "left ear" side up) then replace the cowl/seat and your helmet is secure, well until someone wants it bad enough that they cut the strap! The XB-R tail did not have this hook.

There is a loop of small wire-rope in the toolkit to loop thru your helmet strap and hang on the hanger you describe.
Not all toolkits have the loop.

I put a square of car innertube rubber over the whole of the battery when I got the bike as I could see an accident in the making!

Yea, I put tape over the + terminal.

Even with the guard in place, I've sparked it a few times.

I have a triangle piece of 3/16" silicone rubber that fills the opening under my pillion seat just for that reason. Besides, with all the terminal blocks and wires I have back there it's a good idea ;+}

On the race bikes I prepped, I cut that cross bar off along with the helmet hook (it damages solo tail race bodywork), and went back to an XB battery (the terminals are reversed). A minor reroute of the cables, and the positive-terminal-next-to-big-metal-part-problem was solved.

That and the battery comes out really easy.

Alas that's a race bike though.

Of course, why not?????????

Actually that pict was to show a mounting point for the GIvi hard bags and I needed a spare hand. I check those terminals and battery terminals once a month. I do find the battery terminals loosen too often.
