Who has the most miles on a 09 stator without a failure? Did you have the harness upgrade.

It's obviously not me. Mine crapped out at 3,700. Harness upgrade performed at 1,500.

You have way more than me on your 09. I've got around 1,500 track miles and another 1,000+ street miles on mine.

No upgrade, running strong, never seen the batter below about 13.5.

800 before mine died. 2,000 since the upgrade with no issues. The volts get in the 12's in stop and go traffic in hot weather, but otherwise it's always showing 13.6. to 14.1

I'm wondering if the harness upgrade is done with low miles,if that helps save the stator from damage.Just like anything else electrical, once there is damage,it's too late. The harness upgrade certainly isn't going to save from a complete failure. Just my .02 !!!

I went in at 620 miles and I was informed that the upgrade had been previously done.
The bike had 39 miles from dealer.

The circumstance leaading to the failure is more of my concern. I rode my CR about 2200 miles in the last 6 months mostly in the metro PDX area. The rotor died with about 2500 miles on the bike.

The last few hundred miles were all on my CR's first big day trip with about 75 other bikes mostly BT's. The ride went on three segments of mostly curving mountain roads in the Oregon Coast Range.

Three 4000-5500 RPM constant shifting LONGER duration heat cycles was the final blow. 45 miles from town the CEL and Battery lights go on. I watched as the voltage dropped a tenth at a time. It failed just after the 10.0 volt readout.

Jaimec,
11,500 is the highest I have heard. Did you have the harness upgraded? Has your bike spent much time at high operating temps, idling in traffic, etc?

Haven't had the harness upgraded yet. I figure I'll get that done at the 12.4K service (which is coming up real soon).

As for spending much time at high operating temps and idling in traffic: "Dude, I live on LONG ISLAND! That's the only kind of riding I do!" ; )

I did do California Superbike School at NJMP last year... rode the bike to and from the track as well.

So you got the good stator : )

Seriously, you've had a better luck than most. You sure you want the harness upgrade : )

What, exactly, does the harness upgrade address?

I've got 4K miles, no harness "upgrade" and no stator malfunction.

My riding consists of hot TX commutes in and around the gloriously weird Austin. The coolant may very occasionally see 210º F but usually stays less than 200º F. I am an aggressive street rider usually shifting between 6~7K RPM although, I have to drone on the interstate at 4.5K RPM quite a bit more than I'd like.

Do you think just discussing it could make a stator fail?

Stator replaced at 3371 miles.
Harness install 12,033 miles.
CEL and Battery light and 7 codes:
ECM----- ERROR
TPS P0122 ERROR
FUEL P0192
TIPOVER P1151
IAT P0112
SYS VOLT P0112
BARO P2229 at 12,370 miles.
Half highway and half city driving.
Either stator crapped out or maybe something with the new harness addition.
C.

I'd have to check paperwork but I would guess around 15k on my CR before harness "upgrade". Have just under 18k now and battery and check engine light came on day yesterday. Dealer came and got bike today. I'm debating on taking the "upgrade" out if everything gets replaced.

Oh also had my R done at the same time and guess what.... it is also throwing battery lights here and there.

I ride my bikes in traffic, on the highway, out in the twisties - I don't lug them - 3k rpms is the lowest I get UNLESS it's a school zone. I usually cruise from 4-6k and visit redline often. I ride em hard and change the oil every 3k.

Oh forgot, have about 7k miles on the R by this weekend.

Does anonymous have anything to suggest for these problems?

I'm sure there's a lot they could say, but I would imagine that would violate their agreement.

So,
is that 18k on the original stator?

8000 mi, no harness upgrade, no stator failure yet. 09R, no short trips or stop and go traffic. No battery tender.

For those requiring a charger. With the harness upgrade, I work a two week on the road-two week off schedule. I ride the bike daily for two weeks, then it sits for two weeks and I haven't needed to charge it since the harness upgrade. Fires right up first time, every time.

5900 with harness added around 4500. No tender. About half of my riding is slabbing and half is moderately paced local riding. I dont do rush hour stop and go if I can help it.

I was hoping this thread would show some patterns. But, it seems like stator failures are 'all over the board.'

Failures without the harness upgrade,
Failures soon after the harness upgrade,
Failed stators that were installed after the upgrade, and
Jaimec and 07XB12ss beating the odds.

I would really like to know the actual failure rate. 09 Stators have been on back order at least 3 times this year, so I'm guessing it's quite high.

Can someone with access to a failed 09 stator PM me?

That's what i've been trying to say Tpappa. On some other forums i'm on they have the option to set up a poll thread. I'd love to see the patterns somehow in chart form. Just to satisfy my curiosity or not. Seems to me there's allot of failure very shortly after the upgrade. We could extrapolate the data further to even chart how long after the install. Doesn't seem we're going to be able to rely on anyone but ourselves to solve this one.

So does anyone know what the "upgrade" "fixed"?

I only did it because I had to take the bike in for a CEL so I said what the hell. Before this I had 0 issues with my bike and it was always at 13.7-14.2 volts. After the "upgrade" it was never above 13.5 volts.

I am going to ask the dealer to take it out since it's not a recall.

Is it possible a lot of these statues are failing due to bad batteries from sitting on the sales floor for a long period of time? My R had a bad battery in it cause it sat on the floor for almost a year....

It seems to me like a lot of dealers are installing the harness incorrectly. I wonder if this damages the charging system which causes the stator to fail? I know it is not the only source of stator failure, but i have read multiple posts on here about it.

I've got 11,822 mi. on my 09 CR (VERY early 08 build).

BUT..I think I'm going to remove the cover this weekend and look into making the oil flow a little better as one of the other guys on one of the boards did.
His find looks a lot more feezable than lowering the output voltage like Buell is doing with the harness "upgrade(!)".

The stator on my 03, R1 failed at a little over 40K with a similar cause. A similar fix and my R1 now has almost 99K on it with no other problems.

So "unbonding" the interior harness from the case, remove the related interior ribs and remove all sharp edges....maybe my original stator will continue putting out power.

Somebody who needs a stator ought to reach out to Ricky Stator... they hooked me up for a couple of dirtbikes... great product, great price. For $600, I can't believe he couldn't make a really nice (and more durable) unit.

I think an aftermarket supplier will be the answer, although it's sad to have to pay for a replacement part while still under warranty.

Anyone have access to a fried stator?
