Got the UPS ship notice from Erik Buell Racing today on my ECM (Pump gas, stock air/exhaust). Basically taking it out of the box, but did specify a 1,400 rpm ... Wondering how quickly I'll get used to the decreased engine braking. I sure was tempted to leave the OEM style.

So install the ECM, reset TPS, don't worry about any new codes in Diag since they'll clear after 50 key cycles (although I might jot them down to make sure no new ones pop up), and hit the streets for testing. Sounds like a good Saturday AM project!

I am considering the same setup (Pump gas, stock air/exhaust).

What options are there with the ECM?

Enough to make me question and second guess them, at which point I just decided to take it out of the box. I'm no expert, so don't chisel this in stone. From a couple of emails back and forth with Michael (very helpful!) it seemed at least the following were possible >>

- Toggle O2 functionality on/off, left mine on factory style;
- Factory idle RPM speed or lower increments specified, asked for 1,400;
- Decreased engine braking on decel or have it factory style, went with reduced;

Probably more, but since I've been happy with my stock unit, I decided to go with it "best tuned for stock" so I didn't second guess my choices.

It's $250 and richens things up a bit, which I like. I've built enough forced induction cars over the years to know I personally like fatter mixtures over leaner.

Will post SOTP feelings after getting it on and putting a few spirited rides on the ticker. In the unlikely event I don't prefer it, I'll just swap back.

Mike

I wrote to eb r inquiring if an ecm could be set with low idle & no engine braking & received this reply -

1400RPM is the lowest we set an 1125. This keeps the engine braking close to standard. For less engine braking we can set it at 1700.

Interesting ... Seriously guys, trust Erik Buell Racing over anything I might have taken from my emails with them. Perhaps by specifying the 1,400 just for a slightly lower idle speed, my engine braking isn't going to change all that much?! Cool by me - Now it's feeling like a surprise what might actually happen ; )

The stock ECM doesn't have much in the way of engine braking. I was in a tight, cambered 15mph (recommended) right hander in second gear at about 3500rpm. I was completely off the throttle and was hoping the bike was going to bleed off some speed but it didn't. It made it through the corner fine, but I couldn't help but miss that engine braking.

Thefleshrocket, jump on any jap inline 4 and you will notice a serious lack of engine braking. I rode my friends 2010 GSXR 600 the other day and was shocked by how much i depended on the engine braking, i rolled off the throttle and barely slowed at all.

Think you may of just gotton used to the 1125

Thefleshrocket, My old 974cc Ducati has so much engine braking rolling off the throttle slowed the bike so much it used to catch following bikes unawares.
The standard 1125R has little engine braking in comparison to that bike virtually none with the Erik Buell Racing race ECM fitted, which as an ex-two stroke Yamaha rider as well I am well happy with as in my opinion the bike is far more stable when in transition into corners.
Tracks the line a lot better, must be due to a smoother transistion from closed to open throttle.
I think you will soon get used to the way the bike rides, I did find that I had to up the compression damping at the front end a little bit but each of us rides differently so just give it a try.
The idle on mine is stock with mods to the IAC control by Erik Buell Racing.

I can't wait to try mine out ... It's on my desk in the home office. But as I figured might happen, its delivery yesterday did change the weather forecast to rains/storms the next 4-5 days. Damn Murphy and his law!!

I wish mine had still less engine braking.

I've always been told:

There's two speed controls on the bike. The gas and the brake.

You are either using one of those controls.

Or, you are OUT of control.

Ride in the rain ... That's tough for me. After 20+ years of Harleys, I still instinctively add in the "dry all the chrome" time to the actual ride. I'll get better ; )

Okay, headed out of the office to go put this thing on. Water be damned, right?!
