From the over heating on the track and the rust that I found in the D&D today, I would say that I have a blown head gasket. Anybody else run into this? | ||

Compression check and leakdown check. Also look at the oil. Is it milky? | ||

Rust in the exhaust does not a blown head gasket make. Did I say that right? Anyway, unless you are down on power, have oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil or both, then I wouldn't worry. | ||

No water in the oil but I've seen that before when the gasket is only leaking into the coolant channel. We used to use this thing called block check that changes color when it detects exhaust gas in the coolant. Is that stuff still around? | ||

Yes, Got the kit years ago from a tool guy or auto parts store. Universal Block Tester or Leak Check | ||

My head gasket went out about a month ago. Search "head gasket." There was no coolant in the oil, nor vice versa --- just a teardrop of oil down the pulley cover. Took about 2 weeks in the shop, including over a week for the parts to arrive. | ||

Sounds like your head gasket wasn't installed properly. The phrase "blown head gasket" means the gasket failed between the combustion chamber and a water jacket and/or oil pathway, atleast to me it does. Normally it is fairly obvious. | ||

Bueller: Yeah, that's why I wrote the gasket "went out" instead of "blown." I don't know enough to diagnose a cause, and neither did the tech, but the bike has about 15K miles on it, and there were no symptoms until I happened to notice an oily teardrop just a few days after washing it. I consider myself lucky that I happened to be taking the bike in for a tire change; I don't know that I would have changed my plans had it been a canyon-carving day . . . |
