This past Sunday I changed my oil and when I went to tighten up the oil filter housing I snapped the left side Torx bolt. Luckily the design of the housing was dummy proof. The bolt snapped near the head. When I went to pull off the housing thread was showing luckily and I was able to use some needle nose vice grips to loosen it out of there. I thought I would have to go down to Sears to get an "Easy Out Drill Set". The mistake only cost me a little time and 9 bucks. Harley had a bag of 4 these bolts in stock. So I took all 4 just in case. Lesson well learned the Torx bolts don't need to be tightened that much. | ||

Yeah I was pretty careful with those guys ... manual says 97 in-lbs (11 Nm). Thanks for the heads up. | ||

I went and spent the money on a new torque wrench that measured inch-pounds for that reason. Before the 1125, every machine I worked on had torques only in the ft/lb range. Too easy to over tighten something like that. | ||

I've torqued those down to spec on my 2 oil changes so far and noticed oil seeping after riding and getting it hot. I gave the bolts a couple little bumps each fix it. Noticed the seep on my coworkers 1125 and let him know. He doesn't do his own oil changes. | ||

+1 Freight. I went and bought a "little" torque wrench myself. And FWIW, those oil filter housing bolts, at least on my '09 CR, are *either* torx, or 10mm socket. Either tool will work. | ||

Just think about it. Torque=force*distance from pivot point. 97 in/lbs means 97 inches from the pivot point put one pound of force. Or in more practical terms, one foot from the pivot point put 97/12=8 pounds of force. If your wrench is 6 inches, put 16 pounds of force on the end of the wrench. |
