When I cleaned the air filter today, I was surprised by the fact that there were 2 covers. The inner one was the "airbox" right? It seems to go against the design philosophy to have 2 parts do one task, and I really thought the see through covers were great. I would like to replace both with a new cover that could perhaps get some more ram air out of the airstream. Does this seem feasible or am I missing something? | ||

hi, this 2 covers are building a "helmholz"-effect http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helmholtz_resonance .. "When air is forced into a cavity, the pressure inside increases.".... so the airpressure is higher for more power - if you remove the second cover the bike will get louder (like you put in an K&N Air filter...) | ||

And if you remove the inner cover, you LOSE the ram-air effect since the outer cover is not pressurized by the intake ram. Aaaaannnddddd.....here we go again with the inner airbox lid debate. A side note - every Buell since 2003 has had 2 intake/airbox lids, except the Blast. Even the translucent bikes. | ||

So by drilling small holes in the inner air box cover will not help performance? | ||

you will lose the pressurizing effect of the ram air at speed if there are holes in the inner airbox | ||

You can use the XB see-through covers on your bike, but I would let the inner airbox alone unless you were doing a 'for show' look. |
