I have a 2008 with a 2010 replacement motor that was put in after 8 miles with the upgrade harness. 900 miles on it and from day one it gives itself throttle when letting out the clutch, this always happened when cold pulling out of the driveway, I thought it was just the ECU taking over when the bike is cold and that went away after about a mile or 2 of riding. Now it is happening all the time, the past 2 rides, last Friday rides was about 35 miles and today around 10 miles, the deal is now when I let off the gas it keeps going and the engine revs do not drop quickly and will not drop below 2500rpm, I can go down the road in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd like it's in cruise control, no gas and it doesnt drop in revs.
I pull in in the garage, do the 3 full throttle key on TPS reset, road test, same thing. Disconnect and reconnect the battery, same deal. I pull the airbox cover off and filter to see if the throttle plates are closed, yes they are. So I start the bike and slowly let out the clutch, slipping it and the revs go up but the throttle plates are closed, I try this in 1st & 2nd gear while in the garage not moving, every time I let the clutch out slightly the revs jump up with no throttle and the throttle plates closed. Sorry for the long message but before I bring it to the dealer I was wondering if anyone had any ideas?
Can the 08' cluster do something funky or the ECM?

Bad or intermittent IAC? that's my guess.

Dunno if the 1125 engine would behave the same way, but I've had trouble with intake gaskets a couple times on my X1 and the main symptom is always that the bike idles down to 2000-2500 rpm and hangs for a few seconds before dropping to the normal 1050.

Intake leaks are easy to check by spraying brake cleaner or something else flammable around the gaskets. If the engine revs when you spray - you found your leak. With the 03+ frames, spraying anything at the throttle body could be difficult, and brake cleaner will damage paint/powdercoat if you're not careful where you spray it.

Probably not helpful of applicable advice, but it's worth a shot

normal for OEM ECM to increase RPM as you let out the clutch.

possibly. I might be wrong since it seems to have changed over time.

Its normal. Actually it is set up this way in the IAC settings. I actually adjusted mine in the ECM to stop it. It is the IAC steps. There is a jump from idle control to normal fueling in the IAC step increments. I equaled out the spacing and the rise disappears.

Doesn't sound very normal to me. What it does sound like, is either an intake leak, or whacked programming in the ECM.

brake cleaner may not be the best idea as it will rot rubber.

WD40 can be used to check for intake leaks and it does not harm the paint or fittings.

Just an idea. I have read about the ECU increasing the rpm when you let the clutch out. I am going to suggest that you try disconnecting the wires from the switch on the left (clutch) master cylinder and see if it still happens. It may not work at all but at least it should not do any harm.

Hey guys....I'm a technician.....believe me when I say.....
Its normal. Actually it is set up this way in the IAC settings. I actually adjusted mine in the ECM to stop it. It is the IAC steps. There is a jump from idle control to normal fueling in the IAC step increments. I equaled out the spacing and the rise disappears. In the IAC settings there is also a Clutch/Neutral setting called 'Idle air control configuration-Clutch or neutral required for IAC active' this is set/unset in the ECM.

I just reread the post. It does sound like normal behavior. That's what I get for trying out my reading comprehension skills before 7am. Sorry about that.

Axl -The E buell race ECM is set up in the IAC to behave like a two stroke. No engine braking. This is great on the track and many like it on the road too. Not me! My mate and I adjusted it out and have comfortable engine braking back on my E buell race ECM. I find it better for normal road duty with Dutch traffic here in Europe.

My CR's done this from the first time I let the clutch out over 10,000 miles ago.
But as you say, just until the engine gets to some predetermined temperature.

Something designed into the ECM.

Maybe for beginners or something...?

It is for mine... When cold

I can ride through the carpark at work at 15mph with just my left hand on the bars.

It's always done it and I have no concerns.

The change from your '08 to the new '10 motor is most likely because you now have the latest flash to go along with the new engine.

And yes, it's normal.

I can stall mine too (200# in full gear). But, it does rev up.

What flash do you have? The auto-rev / auto-idle seems to be more noticable in the later ones...

Thanks for the replies, I did read that some throttled is applied and on my bike it was mostly when cold and then it was good after warmup, right now something has changed and it is not normal, I don't mind 2-stroke like engine braking but letting off the gas and having the thing accelerate is not good, if I pull in the clutch the revs drop. The IAC seems like the problem and it's going to the dealer.
Trafford, what did you use to make the changes, I am mostly on the street with a once a year track day and prefer 4-stroke engine braking and my wrist in control of the motor and not the electronics.
