While out on a trip this past weekend, the CEL came on momentarily, then went off. This happened a couple more times. I noticed no difference in how the bike ran, even on the 8 hour slog home.

Anyway, the code that comes up is:
P0339
CRK POS SYS ERR

Does anybody know what this code means?

Just guessing but Crank Position Sensor.

That doesn't sound like an error I'd want to ride the bike on...

On google that's the same code that a lot of cars use for Crank Position Sensor Problems so I'd suggest that's right.

My check engine light came on this morning on the way to work, too. There was a significant jolt when the light came on, almost like the bike misfired. Once I got to work I entered the diagnostic mode and I had the same P0339 (CRK POS SYS ERR)error code. I also had a second error code: P1047 (F-R AF SYS ERR) My Buell dealer isn't open yet so I can't call them to find out whether these are serious and a quick search of Bad Web didn't yield anything promising. Mostly very old stuff from 2008 models. Mine is a 2009 R with just shy of 3k miles on it now. Bought it new in September 09.

It sounds like the crank sensor quit for a second caused a missfire in the front and rear cyl. I would check grounds and then get it into the dealer or if you don't want to do that just order a crank sensor and put it in more than probably thats all they are gonna do

P1047 is for too large a difference between the front and rear adaptive fuel values.

Some info in this thread:

Jules - Thank you for the info. I left a msg for my dealer to call me back with instructions. Is it something I should trailer or should it be ok to ride it there (30-ish miles)?

Hmmm...thanks for the link Jules. My bike is a 2009 with a Jan. build date so it might be one of those affected.

My CEL first came on while riding in the rain, so I figured it was something electrical caused by water getting where it doesn't need to be.

On the way home from NC, anytime the engine was started, the CEL would come on for a few seconds, but I never noticed hard starting, poor running or anything to hint that bike was not running normally.

My AFR are both at 103 and the bike is de-noided but otherwise completely stock.

I can't really advise you on that sorry.. I don't have access to a trailer so I'd probably ride mine in (well, it's under warranty after all) but I suspect if I have a trailer I'd use that (especially if they are likely to ask to keep hold of the bike).

All the lights on the IC light up as it initializes every time you start.
If the CEL stays on for a couple of seconds, you have a "historic DTC" that is stored for 50 "clean starts" then it resets.

You can go into Diagnostic Mode by pressing toggle and mode while you turn the key to ON or PARK.
