OK I've put the wheel on & off 4 times and everytime I'm following the service manual to the letter and I get the belt on the rear sprocket in perfect position, snug everything up, loosen, then snug, and drop it down, roll down the driveway & the belt guides itself off the sprocket about 5 millimeters from the backside sprocket side, right about at the point of rubbing the chain guard, it's like micro touching it, doesn't go any farther but everytime I've tried I've ended up with it doing the same thing.

Am I missing something? Anyone had this problem & figured what was wrong, I mean we're not talking many variables here ...

Very frustrated, it's not raining & I gots to ride.

Pics of it? Mine usually slides a little left also, but it never touches anything.

Roll backwards and they do walk. Roll it forwards (the bike, that is) and it should line itself back up.

There is no "alignment" - the wheel only goes on one way, not like there are adjusters for the axle you can have misaligned....

OK this is interesting, I rode around the neighborhood and it didn't come farther off, it just seems to be about 2 millimeters hanging off the outside edge of the sprocket. Now, when I roll it backwards for about 10 feet, the belt moves to the inside to a position that looks to be perfect, and then as I go forward it moves back to the outside again. Hmmm.

I took a couple pics, let me get them up.

OK here are two pics, the "forwards" is the one of when I ride the bike forward.

The "Backwards" one is when I roll it backwards like 10 ft.

(sorry about the sitebuilder draft page for the pics, it was just the fastest way for me to post a couple pics from the iphone)

Mine will work itself to the left with the bike rolling backwards, and will seat itself against the rear pulley perfectly when rolled forwards.

Although it makes no sense to me why this would happen, perhaps if you put the belt on the other way (i.e. put it so that the lettering on the belt is facing the other direction as seen in your first photo) it will move inward as the bike is rolled forward.

You got me thinking, maybe I messed somehow on the tension, it says to work it on from the top of the sproket tight across the top to the engine sprocket, maybe I got more tension in the bottom section. I'm going to completely take the belt off and go thru it again.

Did you remove the idler pulley from its bracket? Maybe it is installed incorrectly...

Well I'm completely stomped.

I took everything apart per the service manual, took the belt off, took the idler off, put everything back in order according to the SM & torq'd everything precisely & spun the rear wheel and same friggin thing. I can't believe such a stupid thing is hanging me up. There's just not that much to it ... aarrgghh.

did you try flipping the belt and idler around 180 degrees (not both on the same try)?

Oddly enough, this is actually common of the Buell belt drive. Honest. It also happens on other models such as the Ulysses. If it isn't rubbing, you can ride it. If it is...you can either put a washer behind the belt guard or try to get them to give you a new one by saying "this one is rubbing and isn't safe" or something like that. Short of that...there isn't much you can do. Its just the cut of the belt. Some of them fit snugly, some of them hang way out there. This isn't the first time I've seen it. My belt hangs out on the edge a bit. Doesn't go out much over the edge, but just likes to ride the edge. Well, good luck to ya whatever you decide to do.

So that no one has to look at the weirdness that is random family photos next to rear wheel pics:

I've never takent the idelr all the way off, not the pulley, just the bracket, although i did losen even its bolt this last time just to retorq every single bolt.

I didn't take the belt off & flip it around, I did look very closely at all markings on it to see if there was any directional reference, nothing. I thought about it, but I didn't have the heart to do it yet again tonight.

But, if what SteelTech is saying is true, then I guess i will in case this is some manufacturing thing on the belt, it's hanging over by about 3-4mm, it's not rubbing anything, but i can't say I'm real comfortable with it like that so I'll keep after it til it's resolved.

It's not an issue. There is a manufacturing tolerance and you are within the margin of "error." YOu cannot adjust the belt so why are you banging your head? Shim the belt guard with a couple of washers and call it good. My 2008 R is like this and it's never affected one thing.

maybe I got more tension in the bottom section.

Pointless to worry about that. When you rotate it, it will even itself out.

Appreciate the sanity check, guys, sometimes you can just out think yourself, or at least I can.

So I went for about 20 mile ride & it settled in a bit, it's about 1mm over the outside edge of the sprocket, so I'll ride some more this week & see if it doesn't just settle in a bit more. Thanks for the input.
