Had a spare couple of hours today so thought I would install the backup camera:

The camera mounted easily enough and is wired into the back light circuit.

The screen fits easily under the Zero-G double bubble and actually looks rather neat:

The wide-angle lense really gives a good view behind across several lanes of traffic.

Being wireless the whole install took less than 2 hours from start to finish (quite a bit less in fact).

I've left the mirrors on for the moment, but if I get on with this setup I'll pop them off soon.

I'm glad I joined this forum - there are some cracking ideas on here.

Nice- Let me know if it's wide angle enough to be safe. I'm thinking of the bark busters with the LED turn signals for my CR and would need to solve the mirror issue.

I like where you put the camera. Now ditch your stupid key chain.

Nice... got a picture of you throwin it up... The camera looks sweet, I don't care for the key chain either. I do like how you mounted the camera on the plate and how you got everything blacked out... Nice job

Do you think a 3" screen would have room in there?

With the double bubble I have fitted - yes.

With a std screen I think it'd be a tight fit, but it actually depends on the surround around the display itself. The display (screen) is 2.5" but the whole "monitor" is about 4.25" across.

It's sat in a "case" that came in the kit but I took that off of the dash mount base and screwed it directly into the headlight assembly with rubber grommets to dampen any vibration. I don't think there's any way to mount it any lower than that (and if you did you'd lose the bottom of the screen to the fairing bracket anyway)

So can you see it well and see what is behind you rather than the blur you get with the mirrors? Have you had yours out at night to see how lights affect it?

I haven't been out at night yet, will do that on Monday.. On the road it's a huge improvement over just seeing my elbows and shoulders or shifting around to see past them.

It's got a good, wide-angle so on the freeway if sat in the middle of three lanes I can see all 3 of the lanes behind me.

It's not really going to be that good at spotting cop cars (screen is too small) but you can clearly see traffic coming up behind.

It's also very cool watching them retreat rapidly when nailing it away - like being in a playstaion game!

How much did the cam cost? Where did you get it?

I didn't realize why anyone would want a backup cam on a bike until you commented on rearward visibility in traffic. Lol

it'll be nice to lose the mirrors for lane splitting and I hope to be able to see more clearly behind me. Every time i look in my mirrors everything is so blurred I think Im seeing flashing lights!

The kit cost me £35 (about $50) from Amazon, I know you can get them a bit cheaper stateside.

How do you get it to stay on all the time? I was under the impression that most of these kits only stayed on when vehicles were in reverse? I guess whatever that wire is that tells the unit it's in reverse is grounded or powered?

There are only 4 wires. One 12V positive and one earth to power the screen, I just ran ththe positive to a switched live under the fairing.

There's also a 12V positive and earth for the camera - I ran them up to the rear light so everything just turns on when the ignition is switched on..

I had the chance to take it for a proper ride this morning, I need to fab a small "visor" over the top of the screen to keep it in the shade and ideally it needs a bigger screen as it's not easy to just glance at it and see clearly.

Using it AND the mirors gives a great all round view, but it's not good enough to take them off completely IMHO.

I've just ordered another setup, this one with a 3.5" screen (an inch bigger) and a camera that's adjustable (up & down) which I'll fit this weekend and give this setup to a mate.

The bigger screen should make this more useful : )

Yeah, it's a high pre-fomance reverse gear cam. Not sure why you're confused.

I decided to bite the bullet and buy a bigger screen, the 2.5" screen is just a little bit too small. You couldn't just "glance" down.

The same company do a 3.5" version and this "Just" fits under the Zero G screen..

This is it fitted with the fairing off.

This is the final fitting, it looks "wonky" but it isn't really - just a trick of the camera.

The new screen is significantly better I'm much happier with this setup.

Have you thought about the weather? That thing going to last if you get caught in the rain?

Is the monitor weatherproof?

The monitor is not weatherproof, it's a concern I'll admit but it is pretty well tucked into the fairing, the rain would have to be pretty directional to hit it.

I'll probably add a neoprene sleeve to it to give it a bit of protection.

That licence plate is about half the size (and the wrong color)of the legal requirement here in the UK (9" x 7") is the legal size here which looks rediculous. I'd rather pay the £30 ($45) fine when I get stopped (roughly once every six months).

I'll keep an eye out for a neoprene sleeve for a satnav that's roughly the same dimensions. In the meantime the screen is easily removable for when the bike is parked up and protected by the fairing when moving..(I hope)

Having been using the system for a while now I decided to upgrade the camera.

I sourced a high quality (and yet cheap) Infrared CMOS camera from eBAy.

The old system has a proprietry cable so it needed to be adapted (simple enough - cut the connectors off the old camera and fit them to the new one).

The quality of image display is a vast improvement, and the Infrared aspect is superb. It comes on at night (light sensor built in) and acts like a "torch" pointing backwards.

All in all I am very happy with the upgrade, it's getting a lot closer to how I want it to be now.

This is the new image on the screen - it looks much better in real life. The new camer has a built in "depth guage" which is quite nice:

In the dark the Infrared cuts in and you get a nice rear "torch" lighting things up behind you.

Thanks for directing me to this thread Jules. I don't see where you mention the name of the company that makes the 3.5" kit with the adjustable camera. I see a VR3 on the monitor. Can you give any more information on that? I'll try and search it up on Google.
