As long as there's no detonation, there shouldn't be any issues.

I use 93 everytime.

I was just curious, and I know that there are others here way more knowledgeable than me, here on this site.

Then you're wasting money for an imaginary benefit. If your engine isn't knocking, then there is no reason to use higher octane fuel and your bike will not make any more power or "run" better.

87 works great in Colorado.

Not so well in Arkansas.

Sometimes 93 is not available. Out in the sticks, gas shortages, etc.

I have run my XB's on 87 a few times. My 06 Uly hated it, my 06 SS didn't care. With the Uly as long as I was cruising or lightly accelerating I was fine, but it would ping when I get a little too excited. I haven't tried my 1125's yet, I might do it this weekend.

I think you will find bad things will happen with a high compression motor like the 1125r...remember you may not hear the pinging and such, but will most likely occur. Why risk your new motor unless an extreme circumstance?

OK, I'll revise my statement a bit. The owner's manual says 91. They're probably being a bit conservative, but Buell developed the bike so I would personally go with that. I wouldn't waste my time with 93 though.
Remember the people who recommend that you use higher octane gas, or that you spend 3 months salary on an engagement ring, or that you have to change your oil every 3000 miles in your car are trying to sell you stuff even if you don't need it.

I was riding in the backwoods of Arkansas, and there was only a gas station about every 100 miles it seemed like. The 2 I filled up at were old junky stations with only 85. I filled up twice with it and it seemed to run ok. I wouldnt recommend it if at all avoidable though.

I doubt the Buells have this capability, but some BMW and Honda bikes that require premium fuel are able to detect engine knock when running lower octane fuel and will retard the ignition until it goes away. Consequently power is reduced and the engine is protected from damage. Most modern cars that require premium fuel have this capability as well.

Like I said, I don't think the Buells have that ability but when a vehicle does, the owner can opt to use cheaper fuel if power is not as important to them as saving money.

True! But sometimes they are trying to sell you something that you *do* need.

Non synthetic oil in an air cooled motorcycle has experienced *significant* breakdown in 3000 miles. The Helicon is likely better, but still a pretty demanding application.

My XB9 pings a lot with anything short of premium. Resetting static timing helped some, but not enough to run cheaper gas.

My Saab (turbo) has a fuel efficiency gauge, and I can tell when my wife put in less then premium just by watching that... I loose about 3 MPG. It accumulates averages over time as well, so I can also see how she's been driving : ).

The UK uses a different measuring system than the US. 87US = 91, and 93US is 98 for you.

It is a waste of money as the (US) bikes are tuned for 91US. I assume the UK bikes are tuned similar, so in stock form you would not benefit. If you have a Race ECM and play with the timing, you could theoretically advance the timing to take advantage of the extra few points, but you risk having it knock again if you run the lower octane. : )

Some of the new SAABs that run on ethanol are designed to advance the timing when running ethanol blends allowing the motors to take advantage of the higher octane and produce more power.

I had a problem up in NY state a couple times finding premium so I just put in regular didn't do it but 2 or 3 times had no ill effects though

The high octane fuel (if it's non-street legal race fuel) might be aggressively oxygenated, though, and that *does* make a modest difference.

The other thing you can do with your gas to get a little more power is store it in a VERY cold fridge and only pour right before the race. It's a modest difference at best, but measurable.

In AZ there is a station that sells 101 octane and 110 octane, unleaded. I never have ran neither, I stick to Chevron 91 and my 1125 CR loves the stuff.

-I fear trying anything that is not recommended due to the fact that this bikes seem like they are so touchy when you reach outside the recommendations.

-Ride USA, lives in the same place and asked where this place was that sold it, so if your out there, how did it run?

-I know its like $5-6 a gallon

Littlebutquick, You are talking RON (used in Europe) not RON/MON average (what we in the US just call octane) yes? 95 RON equal to about 91 Octane (the recommened fuel for 1125s) and 99 RON equals about 93 octane.

Octane rating does not relate to the energy content of the fuel. It is only a measure of the fuel's tendency to burn in a controlled manner, rather than exploding in an uncontrolled manner. So you need 91 and no or less more for the 1125 engines. So don't waste your money!

I found the gas station...but for 100 octane they want 6.30$$$ a gallon...so i said the hell with hit....but if it will help out the buell community then the next time i fill up, i will put in the 100* to see if it makes any noticeable difference.

yay it is, but once wont hurt..hell it might be good for it to have some of the "good stuff" every once and awhile..i noticied some carbon build up on the valves when i was checking the air filter a couple weeks ago...

alright sounds good, the more the merrier!!! keep in mind the 66 is in flagstaff...itll be a NICE ride, cant wait to figure out the details : D
