i want glass fairings. no not fiberglass. real glass. why? cause nobody told me why it's the dummest idea in the world yet!!! thats right glass. with or without a tint both would look cool. custom molded for the 1125. maybe the kind thats in cars, the kind that shatters but doesn't break. i just think it would look cool like a watch with a clear back when you can see all the moving parts. |

I think you'd probably be better off with clear plexiglass. Glass can be strong, but is typically VERY brittle - the vibration of a motorcycle mixed with the crap thrown off the road would run a very real risk of breaking them. That said, I think it would look incredible for a show bike or a factory demo (static display) model. |

But won't Plexiglass melt and turn colors? |

i think if u have the time and money.. and ability to do it.. DO IT!! i think it be bad A$$. you can find protective films and if you put enough brackets and bushings you can stabliz the vibbs. |

Just throwing it out there....but most people don't "plan" to drop their bikes... "Hey guys, tomorrow when I'm backing out of my garage I think I'm going to drop the bike..." "You know what would be great, if I low sided on the next corner..." (Message edited by westmoorenerd on January 27, 2010) |

"the kind that shatters but doesn't break" If it shatters, wouldn't not still be broken???? It would be very heavy. |

Guess you haven't met me yet. My new years resolution was to not drop a bike. That didn't last long |

Xb12mike: I believe he's referring to tempered glass that crumbles when it breaks as opposed to regular plate glass that fragments into sharp bits. Think "broken car side window" vs broken wine glass. |

There are two kinds of bikes in this world, those that have been dropped, and those that are going to be dropped. |

the first thing i do when i buy a new bike is to drop it on each side before i leave the dealer so i can get that out of the way,and fixed,so i won't have to do it later....

Heat formed transparent plastic is the best bet and there are many Industrial Plastic facilities that could do it...but I work with the stuff professionally and I would never use it...plastic scratches easily, is a dust magnet, and would look like crap after the first ride. Forget about dropping it: it's the bugs, tar, grit and other airborne debris that will ding it and make it look awful. Even inside with constant care plastic things start to look like crap in no time. Glass is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too heavy. |

I saw a bike at a custom show once with a glass gas tank (i thought it was perspex initially but the owner insisted it was glass).. It looked really cool and would be so much easier to check your fuel level (just glance down LOL).. A glass fairing though - I think I'll pass.. |

Glass is dumb. Think how damned heavy it be. Go with plastic like these guys did. http://www.superstreetbike.com/custombikes/0912_sb kp_2007_suzuki_gsx_r600/index.html It might look cool, but you'd have to do something about all the ugly wires and bits. No? |

How about a used hand-made metal chinese wok look. With wooden handles for the grips.

If you do aluminum you can polish it and it would look like chrome-ish, trust me we send aluminum out at work all the time to get polished, it would be light also. |
